I've never seen that definition. I think it's more complex than that. Wikipedia has a good one:

A human society is a group of people involved in persistent interpersonal relationships, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.

With that you could argue that transsexualism is not part of the dominant cultural expectations in most western society. That is a contention I will agree with. But I don't agree that just because something is not part of the norm, it is deserving of marginalization.

Two-Spirit is term used for gender-variant people in native american culture. They were sometimes thought to be divine and were respected.
