Well, I'd say that's a fictional episode of Criminal Minds where they emphasize how stupid this shit is, but having seen some actual PUA shit, it isn't. The real thing is even worse and more cheesy. They had to tone it down to make it more believable.
It's a combination of desperation and something any other huckster does. You select your audience by almost trying to drive them off at first, so you're left with the real suckers. People who are desperate to believe something (like paying some bogus guru) will turn off their critical thinking, if they have it and think believing is their only chance for something they really want.
Then as they invest in something, monetarily and otherwise, it becomes more difficult to admit they were wrong, i.e. stupid, and they throw good money after bad.
And then you have a few born suckers who just don't have any critical thinking in the first place, but I think these are actually pretty rare. Those are the people who fall for one ridiculous scam after another.
Also, there are probably those who really are capable of picking up women, they just lack the confidence for whatever reason, and they'll be helped by pretty much anything, no matter how ridiculous, that just gets them out there to try. Those are the success stories the PUAs use to sucker in more people.
Anyway, asking why people fall for it is sort of like why do people fall for any other sort of ridiculous bullshit, like Scientology, that seems to be (and actually is) absolute horseshit on its face.

I think that's the majority of the successful PUA "students". Any man I ever knew who doesn't get laid at all is from not trying. Even if someone sucks at it, by constantly trying he gets more experienced and starts learning the right stuff to say and do. As long as he is not constantly shooting way above his league physically, almost anyone who keeps trying is bound to get laid.
I believe the major reason for lack of trying is either the fear of rejection or the fear of being seen (and characterized) as a creep or a weirdo by a woman. One of the things PUAs do is devaluing women - and by extension their opinions - in the eyes of their audience by dehumanizing them. If women and their opinions are worthless then PUA acolytes don't care how they are seen or what they are called which boosts their confidence and gets them to start trying.
Usually the reason they were afraid of women's opinions in the first place is that they were putting women on a pedestal which wasn't working so now that they are told that women are worthless they consider themselves "redpilled".

I think a lot of sluthaters, much like Chris, think that having a girlfriend will give them perfect lives. They want a manic pixie dream girl and/or fuckmommy who'll do everything for them and fix all the problems they have. Thus, they're doomed to crash and burn anyways, even if they do get a girl.

I was just wondering what they themselves will say on it. I asked the same question to Fuckbot and he was genuinely confused and called me nuts for not understanding/caring about wanting a relationship. IceCat's was genuinely "I want woman because I want one" and couldn't come up with a reason beyond that. So I wanted to see what the rest of the pack of troglodytes have to say on it.
