I think modifying the wiring to bypass the meter is a bad idea even if you can do it safely, since it gives clear evidence you are tampering with the system.
Smart meters use a relay to connect/disconnect your power. It is possible to disconnect the relay from the control board, and manually open/close it by sending voltage to the relay as demonstrated in this video:
Since most smart meters use wireless networking there could be clever ways to control them without opening anything up by using a Flipper Zero.
A non intrusive way to capture power from the grid would be to use induction if you are in a spot below transmission lines:
