There was a film recently called "smurfs: the lost village" which shows female smurfs are real. Smurfette is still a construct, though, and is thus distrusted by the female smurfs. Smurfette becomes further alienated and sunsets herself.

According to the wiki for Smurfs, yes. No idea if the original creators consider them as such.

The moral of the story is that when you feel alienated in society and finally find a group that is similar to you, there is no guarantee they will accept you. It is only when you kill yourself will you be recognized as one of them. It's ok, though, because you'll be brought back to life by the power of their regretful tears and then everything will be ok.

Gotta teach kids these life lessons early.
