So I am unsure if it is normal that Chris is living at home, but if he was working, would he still live at home? Prices in Ruckersville are around the upper $200000 mark so Chris may have a hard time getting a place if he doesn't have a stable job. And renting is another way of throwing your money away.

Renting is not necessarily a waste of money. If you rent, you do not have to pay for repairs or homeowners insurance. Also, if you have a roommate or two, splitting the cost 2-3-4 ways is a super way to cut down on expenses.

Course, that's a good idea for a normal person who does not have that much money to spend every month and also gets along with other people and is relatively clean/mindful of others. For Chris, a roommate situation would not be ideal.

If Rocky is still around (alive and either not retired or retired but still in touch with the right connections), she might have the smarts to hook Chris-chan up with Section 8 housing, repairing the Aerostar since its gas mileage and maintenance needs are better for those on a low income than the Cadillac, and virtually all mechanics will work on one unlike with Northstar V8s or Diamond Star four-cylinders, selling the BMW, the Honda, the Cadillac, some of his games & consoles and 14BC as a redevelopment property, moving his games, toys and such to his new apartment or mobile home (which would most likely be in/near Richmond, Alexandria, Newport News or Norfolk due to services and population being an improvement over C-Ville) and getting him a nurse or social worker who will come in periodically & assist with housework, meal preparation, medical needs and bill-paying. That would be an ideal situation.

edit: He would also be FAR away from Snyder and THe GAMe PLACe/Mary Lee Walsh and PVCC, especially in Newport News, Alexandria or Norfolk.

It's a sleepy place that many folks moved to, in order to retire, but still remain within driving distance of hospitals, shopping centers, their old friends, or the Military Exchange. There are a fair number of Graybeards (Korean War vets) in the county, which might have been part of the motivation for Bob to live there. There are pockets of trashyness here and there. Many of them share the same last name as the previous owner, so it's probably a widow or child who had taken the home after the head of the house died, and turned it into their own little trashy playground. In my time in Virginia, I experienced no shortage of spoiled military brats who felt entitled to squander the benefits they inherited from their parent's hard work.

I work for a real-estate company that rents out apartments and houses in Los Angeles (we own a large chunk of houses in East LA, South Central and North Long Beach) and I can tell you with definitive authority that Section 8 is no longer accepting applicants to be on the waiting list for Section 8 in several counties.

Now bear in mind that I have no idea about the situation in Virginia, but if a state as liberal as California is denying applicants the CHANCE to be on the waiting list (which takes about 2-2.5 years to process and receive housing) I don't think it's too far-fetched to assume that Virginia's Section 8 housing program is near-impossible to obtain considering that this is the result of budgets being cut for aid programs again.

Supply and demand fluctuate pretty wildly along the Virginia coast. There are times when there's tons of vacancies, and times where there's a few-week wait. Perhaps it has to do with naval deployments, or seasonal work around tourist areas. Further inland, demand outpaces supply, but the waiting list rarely exceeds 6 months (which is sadly pretty good for the region - DC and Baltimore haven't accepted applications for years). Low income housing for hard-luck cases is also supplemented by church funded housing projects (often, turned-over motels, temporarily modified retail/commercial spaces, shelters, or hostels). I've never dealt with them before, but I'm at least aware they have a big presence around Norfolk. Still, Chris is probably going to be at the bottom of any list, as his diagnosis as "high functioning" will work against him, and because women with children and young adults get preference over single middle-aged males. Chris' only possible ace, is if his congregation includes someone with some clout who might be willing to assist him (like Bell defending Chris). A long shot would be an wealthy white knight, or a magic wish granting genie... :? Chris is boned.

This made me laugh. It reminded me of being a 3 year old and being convinced that the LED display on the VCR was a security sensor, and that I'd get in trouble for being out of bed past my bedtime. Either I'd try sneak underneath the level of the LED or I'd say to myself "I better go to bed.. the blue thing's on."
