So there's apparently a new Ranma 1/2 anime in the works

Even if you want a "Ranma is totes trans!" affirmation episode, this episode was not it. It was a joke episode.
This happens too often and it's hilarious every time. They scream how trans have always been portrayed in media and it's often a gag showing the ridiculousness of a man dressing as a woman.

This is pure autism and ignorance of how Japanese culture views sexual identities. Handome men are portrayed as feminine, but for them it's how they see beauty. They aren't feminine, just pretty. That's why the okamas are grotesque, I suppose.

Ramma is based on the joke of how absurd is for a boy to become a girl and all that entails. It's not about the joy of being trans. Obviously, at some point there will be some enjoyable moments, but I'm sure Ramma ain't happy to be a woman all the time.

Same for Lady Oscar. It's not about being trans, it's about a woman being forced to act like a man since birth by her father who wanted a son. The story is a tragedy.

It’s not glorifying trannyism, you stupid fucking…….
Hey is this the CBR writer

It's like...

Do these people not realize that essentially they're saying that being "trans" is about embodying the most over-the-top stereotypes of femininity? Because that's what Ranma is doing. He's basically acting like what his father thinks women are like. Delicate, soft, cowardly, interested only in frilly dresses and cooking and stuff.

Like... None of the actual female characters in the series are like that. Ranma's female "role models" are a bunch of tomboy martial artists who are strong, courageous, and not interested in frilly dresses and shit. Even Kasumi and Nodoka, the most stereotypically feminine characters in the show, have backbones.

Akane doesn't buy Ranma the dress because she's "opening up" to the new Ranma. She does it because she's confused and, in a rare moment of clarity for her, realizes that this is all her fault. She feels guilty, and she's trying to assuage her own guilt.

And I've never heard one actual trans person describe their pre-trans life as "like a dream".

These people are fucking retards.

Straight men gross, got to be gay or a tranny to feel good about something cause people would get crucified if you question them.

They never realise this, ever.

I said it before: trans wahmen act in a way that would make more women laugh at them behind their backs if they were real women.

Would post in the general anime/manga thread, but honestly, having this become the general Ranma thread works as well. But anyhoo, I'm almost halfway through the manga, and getting glimpses of the anime remake just makes me cringe seeing how they still couldn't get Rumiko Takahashi's look down. The original anime did it better despite it being mainly Nakajima's style and hence the one that's most well-known, but there really is something charming about Takahashi's look. Makes reading the manga all the more smoothly, I was honestly kinda worried I wouldn't take to it. I think having the dub voices in my head help lots, God, they're so iconic.

It's actually been fun recognizing scenes from the anime series because it's so easy to forget many of the episodes were filler, though I have a feeling the anime stopped adapting stuff from the manga around this halfway point, or at least brought them in later. Like the Gambling King chapters are hysterical, though I do not remember him being in the anime proper even though he was. It's bizarre how I just don't remember him being in the anime. I wonder if it's because his design in the anime makes him look like a completely different character from the manga, like holy hell no wonder I forgot about him.

If the remake makes this work in animation, I think there'd be some fun compare-contrasts to be made. Though I'm dreading watching the remake because there was some nice timing and flow in the martial arts sequences in the anime that made those same scenes in the manga pop.

Anyhoo just needed to say something now that I'm so far into the manga. Am definitely much more understanding as to why it was so popular for so long, and I had enjoyed the anime. It makes the troon-base all the more irritating and an actual blight on the fandom for perverting the absolute brilliance of the manga. Maybe the series was a secret criticism of gender roles all along, but Takahashi knew how to play around with it and still allow the characters to still be themselves. Akane is an exaggerated tomboy in her tendency to get uppity and punch/kick characters, and Ranma is your typical hick boy who still has masculine mannerisms and behaviors even when transformed, which is one of the reasons why Akane gets so irritated with him. She's really upset that Ranma can easily be someone she can never 100% be in his female form because he's an actual boy and that doesn't change. Ranma gets away with his exaggerated femininity whenever he's putting on an act because the guys are just that stupid to not catch on he's playing with their personal interpretation of what a woman is like.

Shout-out to Soun Tendo for his running gag of becoming (mostly) a sōgenbi whenever he gets pissed, I love it every time he does it. I seriously don't remember this in the anime at all, though looking it up, it sometimes happened. Apparently just not on a regular basis to have made it stick out in my mind.

Also Happosai for whatever reason is more funny in the manga than in the anime. I think it helps that literally everyone hates him but they can barely do anything to him outside of slapstick, and some of the ways he's utilized in a story arc gives him that malicious feel that I love. Either he's just that much of an evil genius he knows how to make things miserable for everyone, or he's just the dumbass to end all dumbasses that it loops around to being genius. Did Rumiko ever say who her favorite character was? It kinda feels like she actually enjoyed writing this perverted chew toy.

Why is that so funny. It's so dumb.

I could have sworn I heard in 2007 she said Ryoga. Could be wrong.
That sounds familiar to me as well.

I do agree that Happosai was one of the more creative takes on the "perverted old master" thing. One of my friends had the interpretation that one reason Happosai is such a troll is that he's actually trying to inspire his students to do something about him, and he focuses on Ranma because Ranma is the only one who hasn't completely given up and chickened out like the adults have.

There is some validity to that--its specifically because of Happosai that Ranma learns so many techniques and expands his abilities, after all.

Either way, this is part of the genius of Ranma 1/2. Even a played out type like "Perverted Martial Arts Master" is done in a way where he's open to many readings and interpretations, as opposed to someone like Master Roshi who really is pretty straightforward.

I will never get people's hatred for Happosai in the fandom. He serves a point and is entertaining

Indeed I find myself liking him more each time I rewatch or re-read.

Part of it might I think come from the anime playing up the perversion aspect--though even that did interesting things with it (the episode where he tries to change for the better so he can be near a teacher who hates pervs for example).

I've also always found it funny that Happosai himself claims he has no good qualities and has never lifted a finger to help anyone... and yet several times, he has. He comes back around and tries to claim he had a selfish motive but a lot of times that would require him to have long-term planning (that teacher who sucks in people's energies and turns into a little kid has that power because Happosai taught her that technique due to her being sickly, or the two girls in "The One To Carry On" storyline).

Ranma is a series where I don't think any characters are full on evil at the end of the day. I honestly think you could argue that Nabiki is the worst person in the series moral wise.

I still am not really a fan of the Phoenix tribe or Herb stuff.

Ranma as a series is a lot like my favorite band of all time Blondie. It doesn't fall into one genre and yet its own thing that's hard to describe
