My aunt always calls it “Tonic”.

She’s the only one I know who does, though.

Not sure if that’s a New England thing or just her.

Anyone from the real states in this country calls it pop, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, religion etc. It's the most unifying thing in existence and anyone who calls it soda is gonna get gassed someday. Sodafags get on your fuckin boogie board and go back to whatever heroin needle infested beach you came from.

In Boston, it is a tonic, as in "I'll have an orange tonic"

Also in Boston, at least traditionally, if you order a milkshake, it will contain no ice cream. If you want ice cream in it, you need to order a frappe.

This has probably changed a lot in recent decades with more mobile populations. But it was firmly entrenched at least until the end of the 20th century.

I am not Bostonian, so I say soda, like normal people do. But there are Bostonians a stone's throw away from me right now.
Yeah, I didn't know that the vast majority of people didn't call it "tonic" til meeting people from outside my home area. I either called it tonic or referred to it by whatever brand name it had

Here's a map of who says soda vs pop (thx for your dox btw)
Here's a far more detailed interesting map for autists like me, that unfortunately doesn't have soda v pop but does make up for it with a lot of other distinctions
/t

"Soda" is how you spot retarded people tbh.

"Tonic" or a "Cola." Soda is just the carbonated water based for everything else.

...Yes, I know it makes me sound like a smug blue-blood. Don't discriminate against me because I was born into a family of reptilians.

Thank Kek this is just about preferred terms, for a moment I thought there was some actual difference between soda and pop I wasn't aware of.

Soda or pop depends on what terms the seller knows/use
