Yeah, I didn't know that the vast majority of people didn't call it "tonic" til meeting people from outside my home area. I either called it tonic or referred to it by whatever brand name it hadIn Boston, it is a tonic, as in "I'll have an orange tonic"
Also in Boston, at least traditionally, if you order a milkshake, it will contain no ice cream. If you want ice cream in it, you need to order a frappe.
This has probably changed a lot in recent decades with more mobile populations. But it was firmly entrenched at least until the end of the 20th century.
I am not Bostonian, so I say soda, like normal people do. But there are Bostonians a stone's throw away from me right now.
