Photography: a "minimal" free list.

For all the anons farmers who don't want to use Adobe Lightroom or DxO PhotoLab for photography, I got some "workable" free alternatives that do indeed work on Linux, works great for beginners but if you are "pro" you can ignore this post, ngl you are stuck with LR, DxO or Capture One.

RAW photo editors / "photo developer" software
Since these softwares lack some RAW file support for newer cameras or you might have very obscure camera files, you have to suck it up to at least one single Adobe software if you want a wide camera support for your computer:
If you got a bunch of reference photos or images you are "inspired" by and want to have them side by side (good for quick checking your stuff as a beginner to compare your images), I would recommend the following:
  • PureRef (not FOSS, but nice)
  • beeref, GitHub (FOSS, but I have not tested this one if it works)
Maybe it's too much of a nieche, but since this list covers a full photography suite, I think these two softwares are to be added: Adobe Lens Profile Creator (same link as the Adobe DNG converter if you scroll down) and Hugin for making your own lens correction profiles.

Very nieche, only used if you got some old retro lenses that don't have any lens correction profiles online and your only option is to make them yourself.

Just found out about an app called LocalSend. It lets you share files with nearby devices without an internet connection. It's available on Windows, Android, Linux, MacOS, iOS, and Fire OS.
LocalSend is really good, I have it on all of my devices. Another similar app is PairDrop, which is basically a browser-based AirDrop.

Here are my software endorsements:

OS:
I'm a Debian fag

Browser:
LibreWolf all the way. Sure it fucks up some sites that require the tracking slop, but overall the best browser you can have.

IDE:
I like both Kate and Zed. If you absolutely need VS Code Electron slop, go with VSCodium

Image editor:
GIMP, though I dislike the latest GUI update

Office like:
LibreOffice

Media player:
MPV

Schematics & PCB:
Kicad

Audio processing:
Audacity

Numerical computation and signal analysis:
GNU Octave

After having it on my personal laptop for a little while now, I can say Qubes OS is a very good security-focused operating system. It has a pretty big learning curve, and it also doesn't support graphics acceleration within AppVMs by default without a whole other GPU (making it all software-rendered and slow Qube-side,) but it's an all around solid solution despite the pitfalls. Highly recommended for those who are serious about their data safety, and/or like putting the components of their OS together like puzzle pieces rather than having to deal with a command-line headache.

Just beware, you're not gonna be gaming on this system anytime soon unless you're REALLY dedicated.

Pewdiepie made a video about degoogling, bringing attention to GrapheneOS in particular
I really wish I didn't see GrapheneOS recommended so frequently. The "former" lead developer Daniel Micay is completely unhinged, and wouldn't put it past him to push out a malicious update during one of his frequent schizo episodes. I'd recommend CalyxOS over GrapheneOS. Haven't heard any drama coming from the Calyx devs.

Hello. It seems I lost access to my protonmail account (Proton says it doesn't exist), and I'm looking for an email provider to replace my KF email with. Are the ones posted in this post still good?

I desperately needed something like this. Thank you.

Tutanota is good but keep in mind that you have to log in once every six months or it gets deleted (if you're going to use the free plan); otherwise, hassle-free mail creation. Cockli recently removed its webmail and only works via mail client, so it may not be what you need right now. Disroot works well as long as you don't mind them being unabashed leftists; they might take a while to approve your account and you also have to write about why do you need to use their services, yadda yadda. No experience with lolcow mail. There's one last provider not mentioned in that post, mailfence, relatively no-nonsense mail and also touting privacy, though I don't remember if they delete accounts after a period of inactivity; I made one address on there three years ago and it's still there.

mailfence needs you to add a recovery email. I don't want anything tracing back to me.

Tutanota doesn't require a recovery mail so maybe try that... or there's another option. I just read on /g/ someone namedropping mailum, I signed up as a test and you can create an account without the need of a recovery email. Though the free plan is pretty strict in terms of data (only 50mb of storage, 2 email/hour sending limit, 1 recipient for email). Anyway, as long as you plan on using the email at least once per 6 months, you can't go wrong with tuta, but if you're not sure, try mailum if you don't find the free plan too restrictive.

Some other options in the vein of cock.li mentioned by that same anon:
>Pissmail.com
This would be the best 1:1 Cock.li alternative.
Not as much a focus on temporary mails, but more the same shitposting stance to mail.
I don't trust them as much as Vincent just yet though.

>Derpymail.org
If you're a brony, this email was suggest when Cock.li was on "red alert".
They have been in business for quite a while, and their community seems healthy, so probably a decent alternative to Cock.li.
