Scene is still alive, but in very small amounts. Games are a much bigger demographic than audio software, but audio software is probably where you will find the most high level crackers working. Sure, 3D programs and CAD need to be cracked too, but the protections aren't as bad most the time. They have other ways of getting your money. Licensing and the need to have a 'legit' copy when you sell your work. Anyone who ever went to uni and used a cracked 3D program that cost thousands knew they weren't sticking it to the man when they met the company reps and they said "oh yeah, we know you're using cracks - but you're gonna need to use legit software when (if) you ever do any proper stuff".
Having said that, some companies do really get a 'b' in their bonnet about this shit and go full gung-ho against crackers. Happens in the audio world too. Companies like Tone2 actually released software that scanned your HD for crack software and deleted keys from the registry. They rightly got a lot of shit about that. But there are others too. In the audio world you will find the most nefarious and fiendishly simple of copy protections. See also u-he software and the beauty of the 'timebomb'.
I've been studying reverse-engineering for decades now, though I'm not a cracker. Never heard of Denuvo before - guess it's more of a game thing. I just had a quick look what protections it was based on and it seems to be basic CR (Challenge/Response) coupled with machine fingerprinting and then online/inline re-assembly of their code when they get their unique UID's for redeployment on the target machine. No wonder it eats through CPU cycles the way the Gunt eats Cheeze Pizzas! It's a combination of one of the most basic protection mechanisms out there, coupled with one of the most complex.
Good luck if you ever bought a legit copy of this software and the company goes bust so it can't fulfill it's 'Response' part. Many such cases. Sad.

Recently u-he software got cracked. That was years and years before anyone could do anything about Urs's timebombs. But they did it eventually. They used a different way around the houses, but they got there. At the end of the day, it's all illegal anyway, and they (and those that use the software) are breaking the law. All is fair in love and war.
Having said that, companies like u-he are doing better than ever (I just bought nearly a grand's worth of software from them the last 2 years, even if it is all cracked now). And the 2 owners of Image-Line who own Fruity Loops (FLStudio) - which is the most widely used Digital Audio Workstation in the world - and just bought Melda and UVI (plus others) well, they have both got 40 Million in the bank each, and now is the time they want to shift over to copy protection mechanisms very similar to what Denuvo is, in all but name.
There is first a Challenge and Response carried out over internet connection. Then they fingerprint the machine. They collate both IP addys and UID's of the machine in use. It's very intrusive, it takes time, it's a pain in the arse for the legit end user who spent thousands of pounds on it (Me), but hey ho, once Venture Capital or rather Private Equity gets involved, they have to be seen to be doing something to protect their IP (Intellectual Property). LOL.
It's a game of cat and mouse.
