Some developers are pushing back against violent video games - Gratuitous bloodshed and the rise of female gamers have contributed to a backlash

I wish we had a pushback against these wholesome chungus 100 games instead, at this year's not-E3 there was a showcase that almost completely consisted of this boring pastel-colored vomit, I have no idea who plays this shit.
Give me a game where you can take hostages and use them as living shields or something.

But of the 20 top-selling premium games so far this year, 15 feature combat.

Well a lot of games have combat. But the combat isn't always gory or overly violent. It's unfair to judge a game solely by combat. Unless it's a fighting game that sucks. Then you have a very bad game that deserves your harsh judgement.

The article does not specify what type of combat. In the 90s Mario and Sonic were very popular. And that had combat. Jumping on enemies. In Sonic most of them are robots and you free the captured critters inside by defeating the robots. Then comes Resident Evil and you are blowing the heads off of zombies before they eat you alive. All your dead teammates are partially eaten and die horribly. But there's a huge difference between these two types of combat. One is kid friendly the other is not.

Jesus I did not need to see this fucking game again. That artstyle looks so unappealing, like puke on a screen. I’m not really a big indie game consoomer but I can point to a game like Hollow Knight that has an appealing artstyle and actual gameplay.

There needs to be another Drakengard or Manhunt in the modern day.

Haha, holy shit, I just googled the game and its like an hour long? What a joke. Yeah, I sure bet Activision is going to let people out of the CoD camps to do this instead.

I'd love to see another Manhunt-style game, but you know as soon as it gets announced people would lambast it with "Ow, the edge!" and comparisons to Hatred or whatever. Which doesn't mean it would be a bad game, of course, but that's probably a reason people stick to making roguelite deckbuilders and Stardew clones.

Seems every few years the media has to run the "violent games are le bad" stories. I still remember when they picked up on rapelay (an hentai game) and how it would make people go and rape IRL or all the nonstop bitching through the 90s about mortal kombat and the like OR jack thompson and hos crusade against rockstar in the mid 2000s.

I am just glad that nowadays quality indie games are plentyful and smaller studios have a better chance at succeding thanks to digital platforms, because no matter if violent or non violent games are all thats being produced, some insane bastard will spend 5 years in a basement making his ideal game all by himself.

Man. Remember that epic time in video game history when Nintendo of America imposed draconian censorship rules on everyone?
Remember how Germany had to get shitty versions of everything because the Nazis were going to rise again if anyone saw anything vulgar?
That was great.

And don't forget about China banning games that would make the Party look bad.

Huh. This is a stealth ad for that "Venba" game. That game is clearly being astroturfed. I posted about it in the flat art thread when it was new, because it looks corporate and globohomo to the extreme.

The day it launched, it already had plenty of glowing reviews. Here's an archive capture showing that. There was no deep discount sale, nor any promotions from the usual venues. And now we've got an article promoting it a month later?

I swear, it seems like there's a coalition of people from India who are dead set on moving to America and destroying anything and everything tech and entertainment-related they can, and nobody's talking about it.
The Pajete will not stop until every single thing has at least a thin coat of shit. First: it was the tech industry, now: our Vidya.

You know, would anyone actually complain if this VN was just released as an animated web series?

I actually think Mortal Kombat have gone from fun to a bit disturbing. The last one I played was MK11 and having Jax being able to slice off his daughters skull and put out his cigar in her brain was actually a bit too much. They established their connection with each other going into the match through banter. If it had been UMK3 or something it would have been fine.
