God Emperor

Holy boredom is sufficient.

I had noticed a trend in online advertising, and I wanted to test if it was real or just a confirmation bias, so I loaded up the websites for all of the major businesses or organizations I could think of off the top of my head and looked for photos of white men.

Some didn't have any photos of people at all, and some just had them in their 'About Us' or 'Careers' sections.

My choices were entirely random, and in no particular order, and I stopped when it started getting boring.

I should mention these are Canadian sites, for the most part, and that visible minorities make up about 22.3% of our population (Black people make up about 3.5%)

White men make up 36%, and other than white women, are by far the largest ethnic demographic.

Try it yourself, it's kind of mind boggling.

This has been a thing for a few years and is heavily spread throughout anglosphere TV and internet. Give it a quick look over and you're going to see primarily blacks and sometimes an asian. If its something depicting couples its a black male & white female, the few times there's a white male he's always paired with an asian woman.

Once you notice you'll see the pattern everywhere unless its a site or business catering to a specific subset of the population. With one exception: East Asian owned businesses do not give even the mildest of fucks.

One word: Diversity.

And since the Doctrine of Diversity dictates that white men are over represented you show less and less of them until minorities become over represented. But that's considered good. They're trying to attract POC customers and applicants because it makes them look good in the current climate. Even if that may not represent their base at all.

But do white men look at these ads and say "I guess this isn't for me"? If that's a side effect then it's a bad one. It's interesting how you can x out an entire demographic and it's considered fine because its white males.

I live in an American city that's almost entirely white and I've noticed this with the local companies that operate here.

According to the people shown in photos by my local bank, our city is over 80% black, with no white men at all. You have single moms, lesbian families, and absolutely no white men.

According to our local electric utility, the city is 75% black.

According to the garbage company, people here are black 90% of the time you encounter them.

IT"S NOT TRUE. You'd think the city I live in was in South Africa, but it's not.

Anyway, I got my L.L. Bean catalogue for Autumn, and I can see that they've adopted the same problem that Target started: do want to know if a sweater would look good on you? Tough shit, here's a photo of a black man in a sweater. If you're lighter than the sweater's color, you might look too washed out. But certainty by damned, we must feature a disproportionate amount of black people.

It actually effects my life.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, I encourage you to find a white or East Asian person wearing a bright orange shirt and see how terrible they look.

A lot of these adds are for shit like 7-11, telemarketing jobs, overpriced stores, overpriced degree scams, ect. Could be they are advertising to the people who are more likely to fall for partake in these services.

Uh... these advertisements are for the most popular businesses in the country, including major universities, our largest banks, a mining company, and other billion dollar corporations.

There are still white guys in Canadian commercials...

...if they need a "dumb guy" or if they need to show someone attempting to steal a package from a porch only to be scared by the smart doorbell whistling.
I actually did find one white guy on a news site (I can't remember which one).

He was fat, stupid looking, with a goatee and baseball cap on, next to his equally stupid looking and fat wife - apparently they were anti-vaccination activists who died.

So, we've got that going for us, I guess.

It’s just to attract white women and soyboy customers. Nobody else, including the minorities, gives a 🦆.

Its either a bunch people for "diversity" or that god awful corporate artstyle with multicolored vaguely humanoid shaped blobs.

Wait, maybe they're the same thing?

I mean personally I would prefer my marketing not to contain any tedious stock imagery of people at all.
Maybe Canadian marketers have concluded that minorities and women don't count as real people so it's fine to furniture your website with those.

Pretty bigoted of them, imo.
