Sonic Movie Thread - From a Disastrous Teaser/Trailer to Not That Bad a Movie; Got a Sequel

Who's the audience for this movie? I'm serious.

Is it kids? Kids don't really care for Sonic compared with other mascots. Is it adults who grew up with him? But if so, then how could they go so far to warp the source material?

Of course, I expect that the movie makers have just about no confidence in the source material and hope that the humans (namely Jim Carrey) can carry the film.

People are going to either unironically watch it, watch it 'for the lulz', or watch it because it seems like a family friendly film (parents).

Of course, this is the Sonic franchise we're talking about, and its mindless horde of fans will willingly pay for tickets. It'll be a flop regardless of that, obviously. It'll be a strike against the careers of all involved sans the companies doing the CGI.

Blur Studios (a company that's previously done the CGI cutscenes in Sonic games) and Marza Animation (in-house SEGA Animation studio who handles the CGI cutscenes now) are involved with the film, which makes this design really bizarre, given that they've already worked on Sonic before.

What I don't understand is the need to live-actionify characters with overly animated and cartoony visuals. Resident Evil works because it's supposed to have some connection to reality. Mario and Sonic, however, are not. Even the original Super Mario Brothers movie was animated. Sonics first movie was also animated.
This is the opener to Sonic Unleashed. While it's a lukewarm game you can't tell me you couldn't take something of that quality and make an hour and a half film out of it.

Illumination is making a Mario animated film as we speak. Sure, Ratchet and Clank was so bad it murdered the Sly Cooper movie in its sleep and video game movies have way more misses than hits...but there's enough gems out there that prove quality story and appropriate visuals can make it work.

I just realised something kinda horrifying....

Thanks to the promise of such a feast of soul cleansing cringe and the explosion of three decades of barely contained autism and depravity, coupled with the CWC factor and just how fucking bad this movie is going to inevitably be, i am legitimately more hyped for this movie than I have been for over half a decade now.

Like, the last time I felt any real hype for an upcoming movie was the first Hobbit movie (and BOY did that fucking bite me deep) and since then any franchise I had any affection for has crashed and burned without exception, but this is going to be such a goddamn car crash I am straight up excited to see just how much of a clusterfuck both the film and the reaction is going to be

Hahaha, great Photoshop! That.... that is a Photoshop? Right?

Oh.

....oh.

Seriously though, if that is legit, that's pretty much what I was expecting, looking at the silhouette but at the same time it's something you can't really mentally prepare yourself for. It's like they took a chimpanzee, Rocket Racoon, killed both, and stitched the bodies together and resurrected the sin against Man and God with black autist magic.

Did this actually go through a committee? People actually signed off on this? People looked at the original Sonic design, then looked at this and said, "Sure, this works?" Shit,at this point I'm expecting Eggman to look like Wilfred Brimley meets Ed Gein.

This is what I get for being less active, I have a chance to stop getting a sore throat from all the laughing at this failing corporate industry's imaginative dry spell. I'll never call anybody ever the same.

On the one hand it seems like people were out of their goddamn mind to think that anything that wasn't super cartoony looking wouldn't instantly crash and burn. On the other hand though the Transformers were changed from their classic designs to the messy designs that looked like crumpled scrap metal glued together for the live action movies because the director demanded it, so that could possibly be the same thing going on here.
