Our resident Sanic autist, Ryan Bloom, discusses the Mario movie vs. the Sonic movies and whether it'd be better if Sonic had an animated feature film instead:
Nintendo has been living off nostalgia for a while now, they do a much better job at it than disney by not fucking up their franchises with modern nonsense like disney does.
The problem with Sonic is that as everything SEGA has done after the Dreamcast its been half-assed. And while Nintendo might be whoring Mario for the nostalgiabucks they still keep their standards high, meanwhile I've yet to see a Sonic game since SA2 that could qualify as AAA, its been one cheaply made buggy cashcow game after another.
Another difference is that most Mario fans are in their 40's, anyone who grew up with a NES is near 50 now. Meanwhile Sonic's fanbase is much younger, most of current Sonic fans I seen were kids when sonicX started, which was after the DC was already dead and buried. Most of the fans from the og days, the 2D heyday, they moved on when SEGA went to shit with the Saturn and there was no Sonic game for it. I was the only kid in school who got a Dreamcast, nuff said. Its only when the anime went mainstream and the games showed up in other consoles that the current generation of fans, who grossly outnumber what's left of the original fans, showed up.
I think that on top of segammy not giving a shit about what happens to Sonic anymore the movie guys just went and reinvented Sonic because that's what segammy itself has been doing for nearly 2 decades now.
Going back to the age gap, at the movies when the Sonic movie ended I saw mostly little kids and teenagers coming out of the theater. But with Mario it was mostly 30 and 40somethings like movieblob, some DINKs, and I think I saw one guy with his kid.
