Sonic Movie Thread - From a Disastrous Teaser/Trailer to Not That Bad a Movie; Got a Sequel

I liked 3. I haven't liked a soundtrack in a film I've seen for a while. The last time was The Batman. What they've done with most of Shadow's themes has been nothing short of fantastic. Making a darker version of live and learn into shadow's leitmotif was unexpected, but worked excellent with the climax.

That being said I really think they failed Shadow and Gerald as Characters.

The tragedy of Shadow is not specifically one of loss, but rather of his state of being. Shadow comes from a study of genetics motivated by Gerald to save Maria from her incurable condition. He exists because she must be saved. Maria sees the opposite, sacrificing herself to save him. Shadow has failed his purpose. Everyone has failed at some point in there life, but Shadow is strong in the face of his failure even if his actions are misguided. The player relates to that.

That dynamic is never established in the movie, and could have made the character more impactful. Revenge for losing someone you love is a good motive. Choosing to destroy the world because your world has been destroyed is a better one. I understand that this is meant to be a kids movie, but sonic adventure 2 was a kids' game and still managed to pull it off.

i think the thing with it is that SA2 was made with the assumption Shadow was done as a character and would stay dead. So the movies were made with the knowledge that it's a franchise in mind and he's a big player in it, where the games had to shove in the ideas that Gerald made Shadow from the DNA of Black Doom here the films just cut out the middle man and make Shadow arrive on a comet. Black Doom can still arrive later in the franchise and it'll feel like an earned reveal of more of his backstory and give an interesting dynamic for a villain: a villain who is Longclaw meets Eggman

I feel like Gerald you have to go in with the idea that they're basing him more off Carrey's Eggman, with a mix of Eggman Nega (old man robotnik eviler than the original) and some of the original SA2 story without any of the humanizing stuff from Shadow (so just a crazy weapons maker who wants to destroy the world because he went insane). Obviously I prefer Gerald in Shadow Gens, I think he's so far the best and most sympathetic version of the character. I never bought the tragedy until that game, I always just thought of his actions in SA2 as too nuts to sympathize with

That being said there are bits of the movie that DO irritate me and that's because I feel SA2 works better when you realize that it's a story of how Shadow gets completely humbled by Sonic. Here, because Shadowank has been exaggerated by his future appearances and his lovedness in the fanbase he goes from "he needs jet skates to even keep up with Sonic and that insecurity is a part of his character" to "he can push the Ark all by himself where Sonic is too weak". Sure, they establish that in the movies the Super form is a metaphor for adulthood and Shadow is more of an adult by the end of 3 than Sonic is, but I always felt the plot point in the game of Shadow going "the Ultimate Lifeform might be you, Sonic!" before he becomes too weak to maintain super was such a great ending for him and for that game

Metal is cool because he gets actual development from a mute, but still cocky mockery to a completely insane robot with a Starscream energy.
Unlike starscream he only tries that massive betrayal shit once in the games from what remember. It's funny how in the games after that one time too he just fucking decides that one time was enough of an attempt. Kind of understandable with how he did the "basically becoming god" thing and then just got his ass beat anyways so badly he reverted to his orignal design. The explanation of how the fuck that even works? Oh, it 's just "cause we're sonic heroes!"

Personally I'd contemplate fucking killing myself then and there on the fucking spot.

I think Gerald was handled well given the way this version of Sonic’s universe is, but I do agree they should have stuck with him being serious once he reveled his true plans to Robotnick. But I remind myself that this is mostly meant to be a movie for kids and can cut it some slack.

That being said, “Oh, Ivo…you’re no Maria” is a fucking devastating line, like holy shit.

I almost gasped in the theater over that, it's such a good line and was really good delivery from Jim Carrey to his other self. It's another reason why it is it's sad we didn't get more flashback scenes of Maria with Gerald because he loved her enough that he was willing to destroy the world over her death, it's just that we have to fill in the blanks for it. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I was itching for more Maria and Shadow moments personally, so... yeah lol.

I agree with this so much

I watched Sonic 3 again since it was leaving theaters around here and I caught something.

They were still using the Live and Learn leitmotif through most of the climax, at least for the Sonic and Shadow parts. I caught it when they were moving the Eclipse cannon's laser away from Earth. It was playing the "hold on to what if!" portion in the soundtrack.

While I still would have liked Live and Learn blaring, I am more then satisfied with its usage throughout the movie.

It's cool that it's basically Shadow's theme, too.

I had to stop reading the Bible because just glancing at one at this point makes me the most mentally ill person in existence.
I don’t like the Bible, I don’t like religion, I don’t like any of it, I don’t like thinking about it and I feel like that’s wrong but reading it was actually making me sick.
I got so stressed out and depressed, I ended up not getting out of bed for like a week. I slept for like 24 hrs at a time and I spent so much time asleep I wasn’t eating enough, I lost weight and got sick to my stomach. I ended up being so sick to my stomach I couldn’t even take a bite of bread without feeling like I was going to throw up. Then I ended up with diarrhea.

So anyway I decided to stop reading the Bible after that and have just tried to stop thinking as much about anything.

This is all Sonic 3’s fault. From now on I will blame all of my problems on that movie and how shit it was.

I finally got around to watching the rest of it because I stumbled across the whole thing on twitter and it was so much worse than I thought it would be. Absolute garbage. It doesn’t feel anything like the Sonic franchise I love so I simply will not be watching anymore of these awful awful movies.

I still feel like I am not over it. Until the point that we get a fully animated faithful Sonic the Hedgehog movie adaptation I will hold these live action monstrosities in utter contempt.

I despise Jim Carrey, his unfunny acting and how he has made himself basically the main character in these movies. I never want to have to see his face again.

What I have live and learned from this situation is that people praise absolutely trash and that my opinion is better than everyone else’s.

God bless. I’m going to continue to be a Sonic 3 Giga Hater. Sayonara for now Sonic Movie Thread.
Is this another new copypasta? I'm losing track nowadays.

(if serious, I think you should seek out a priest)

Shadow gets all the bitches.

I see they are still forcing in the fat DEI nigger every single movie. Also can't help notice whenever the movie decides it's time for the "girl power" scene it also makes the men act like complete idiots, e.g. donut cop says "aye aye Captain" and the slim DEI woman scolds him for it and calls him Popeye (has Popeye ever actually said that?). I get it they want some "girl power" but they seem unable to do this without also making the men idiots.

Another good Dr Robotnik movie. JC as Robotnik is basically the main reason I watch these, same as that old cartoon with the voice talent of Long John Baldry. But at least movie sonic isn't as annoying as cartoon Sonic ("that's noooo good!").

A review I read made a good point but the problems the series will have moving forward keeping Sonic as the main character whilst also giving screen time to all the other characters including the new ones who need screen-time to develop. In this movie for example you could almost say Shadow was the main character. Think about how many toys were in Toy Story 4, that's what the Sonic movies are turning into if they add 2 new critter ones every movie.

Also notice for most of the movies Lee Majdoub doesn't actually do anything useful, his roles are to make lattes and smile sweetly. Almost as if Robotnik doesn't need an assistant to do actual work, he just needs a sycofriend. How adorable.
