Allegedly Sega didn't really care much about Archie until the late 2000s. I am not sure if this is true but the story goes is that a SEGA exec was in a mall and stumbled across an archie issue where Sonic was homeless and crying. This led to Sega taking more interest in what was being written into Archie.

Whether or not that is true, they did defiantly start clamping down during and after the Pender's suit. This was 20 years after the comic first started publication, but better late then never right?

Sega's pure negligence allowed something incredible to happen and I doubt we will see something as absurd as Archie Sonic for a long time.

Jeeze, good thing I bailed out of the comics once they started getting weird with Knuckles & co. because I don't remember THAT particular issue.

In fact, now that I think about it, things started getting weird all around after Robotnik's death and resurrection into his """new""" form that lead to the Sonic Adventure tie-in special issues. That time travel issue where you had to read the comic backwards definitely threw my younger self for a loop.

the Sonic Adventure tie-in special issues
The sonic adventure tie ins are especially absurd because the lore doesn't match up with the games at all and when they try to make it do so they always do really weird shit that makes no god damn sense like station square being inside angel island or some shit despite angel island crashing into the woods by station square. Covered this already in ramblings a few times over the years but jesus fuck

All of this shit to explain why there were people in the games that called themselves humans and not the scifi bullshit of humans being called overlanders before this.

Also you may or may not nootice this map's exterior is just a weird redraw of the island sonic and tails' house made out of a crashed jet is on in the sonic OVA

EDIT: I forgot to mention around this time sonic was palling around with a midget morgan freeman who only exists in the comics.

And why can't we just accept the possibility that most of the writers were just smoking the good shit at work?

They may have been but this was literally their way of trying to make the comic lore match the games' lore more closely.

...Except for tiny morgan freeman (named nate morgan) he ain't even from the games he's just a little nigga.

I actually liked the Sonic Boom subseries, the cartoon I mean. The redesigns of Sonic and friends weren't bad. The humor was "meta" and clever at times.

The Fire & Ice game (water, duh) wasn't offensively bad.
Sonic boom the games were a failed attempt at doing a naughtydog-ified sonic for the first ones and a kinda meh but ok game for the fire and ice one from what I've heard/seen.

The show was more or less just completely fucking untied to it aside fromt he character designs and felt more like just an extension of the social media voice actor character Q and A things where it just kinda implies this is the kind of shit they get up to when the sonic games aren't happening.

Archie Sonic may have been fucking retarded a lot of the time, but I miss its existence just because it's more interesting to read about the wack shit they did because they felt free to make up their own world and rules. try to fit in OCs as major characters on par with the game cast, and sometimes had to forcibly fit new game stuff into it. As opposed to the IDW comics trying to be "canon" so it's just lame fanfiction that tries not to shake up the status quo and has some crying lesbian OCs that can't do anything too important, and its fans take it way too seriously.

Archie sonic's like "dude what if the echidnas were like techno nazis sometimes what if knuckles' dad punched sonic from another timeline so hard when he's going super that he just turns green what if knuckles turned green because he got emerald cancer or something what if there was a tiny morgan freeman named nate morgan"

Actually thinking about it didn't sally's dad also turn green for a bit? what the fuck WHY ARE THERE SO MANY GREEN NIGGAS

As someone old enough to collect Archie Sonic from debut.... hush....

It's funny because in the end it was really SatAM being forced into becoming SegaSonic and everyone, even at the time, could see how it simply just. Could. Not. Work. In the end.

I mean, that wasn't really the case at first, as paradoxical as it sounds. Archie was just SatAM extended, right? So it wasn't too much a stretch with how especially little Americans knew of SegaSonic lore - and how little of SegaSonic lore existed in the first place, it turned out - to slap, say, Amy Rose into the comic as just another Knothole resident, and introduce SegaSonic chars as residents of Mobius in general, and hell, Metal Sonic made enough sense as in why WOULDN'T Robotnik try to make a robot version of Sonic to one-up him? Just as the show made up stuff off of very little official knowledge and adapted as it saw fit, so did the comic. The kicker is, the adapted versions were still ultimately in service to SatAM's core concept. All those residents of Mobius, Knuckles and the Floating Island, etc. were still fending off Robotnik's global reign of terror roboticizing the entire planet under his control. Amy, as I said, was another Knothole resident saved from the chaos of Mobotropolis becoming Robotropolis. And so forth.

But then Sega started pushing Archie into adapting more of the game stuff, and this is the Dreamcast/Adventure era starting in 1999, when suddenly Sonic had real plots and personalities, and none of it fit into the American Sonic characterizations that had been running in salutary neglect since about 1992 or so. And this is just.... not workable. There's suddenly entire cities of "Overlanders" (humans) hidden away from the rest of Mobius that aren't connected to the people Robotnik and Snively came from? Convoluted ways of turning Sonic and Robotnik into their Adventure selves, trying to turn Tails from a lil' kid into a mechanical genius on par with Rotor and thus Rotor suddenly has nothing to do, the echnidas suddenly getting civilizations and backstories NOTHING like the Archie-made ones...

Yeah.

For all of SatAM and Archie's issues (pun aside), it had a core concept, and ultimately, that core worldbuilding was mashed into something completely different. Archie probably would've been better off rebooting the comic somehow in time for the Adventure era and give SatAM a proper ending in that regard. Obviously they couldn't, that'd piss off too many readers, but perhaps ending the comic at issue #50 as intended with Robotnik's death is as good as any to pretend SatAM concluded.

what if knuckles turned green
Ironically I always liked the idea of Super Knuckles being green to contrast to Super Sonic, even if him being colored pink is too deep into the fanon now.

No joke, I always thought Mecha Sonic was a slick-ass design and I'd kill to see a good fanart piece of him fighting Metal Sonic with them both in proper proportions to one another. Spaz knew what he was doing with Mecha Sonic and Mecha Knuckles's designs.

gotta love how Penders stole from wh40k and got away with it.

Sally's dad was subjected to so many curses, dark magic and radiation, that he aged to 80 in like 2 years.

Then the ones from the Dark Bros game showed up and the copy of Penders' not Adeptus Mechanicus coexisted along with the OG.

Before the penders lawsuit there was quite a weird bit of bouncing back and forth of Ideas between video games and their comic/tv adaptations. It wasn't limited to just sonic but sonic definitely had a bit of it. The Banana slamma becoming DK's signature smash bros. move and the crystal coconut becoming a fuel item in DK64 are examples that always come to mind because I like monkey game.

The blatant push for Ian F.'s girl couple continues (as well as all the other important characters of the comic, all 4 of them)! They're also available on the Crossracing game but, since they have no unique lines nor character reactions as all DLC characters do, their inclusion is quite pointless, kek.

I know it's not game-related, but I really hope Metal gets to be an actual character in Sonic 4.

My nigga has been seen as a borderline personality-less jobber for so long I can't take it anymore
