Video should be available for now, since I've filed a copyright dispute. I've had those get turned down in the past though, so I am looking for a more permanent fix, but for now you should be able to see the video.

Oh my god, the Blockbuster Buster fade-in cracked me up. I'm okay with you taking so long between reviews because I kind of never want them to end!

Will watch the video once I get home from work. Gave you a Winner in the meantime. Hope the copyright thing gets taken care off. Thanks!

Just finished it - awesome review. Also I dunno if it near the end when it went first person you were making an homage to Mr. Plinkett, but if you were, then you just totally made my week.

Yup. The impression actually turned out better than I'd expected- and I didn't even use any distortion like I'm pretty sure RLM does during the intense Plinkett freakouts.

I love your reviews, and love that you are trying to talk about a lot of the transphobic shit that goes on in discussions about Chris; you're the only reviewer to not treat Chris' gender issues as a joke, and that is massively refreshing. Just one thing; Chris has said that she prefers female pronouns and has transitioned, so even though she was identifying as male when drawing the comics, it's really only respectful to refer to her as "she" when talking about her now.

I don't want to start a problem but I guess I might.

What Chris refers to himself as is relevant when one addresses him directly. What someone wants to call Chris when he's not around is up to the person. Unless Chris himself makes the demand to be called a lady by DStecks, I don't think there's any particular need to meaningfully refer to him as one.

You want to do it? Fine. But the Christian Weston Chandler who made Sonichu was a male with all the considerations and concerns it implies. Discussing Sonichu as made by a transexual woman with personal issues doesn't work because it was made long before he started legitimate transition.

In other words, I'm asking DStecks to do what he wants based on his own decision, and not because it's 'more respectful'.

Nice review, by the way, loved the music video.

If DStecks decides to do it because it's more respectful, then he's still made his own decision. He's not being forced to do anything, no one has threatened him with any kind of consequences.

I can sort of understand not using female pronouns because you think that Chris isn't really trans, but to say that we should discourage anyone from even entertaining the question of whether or not it's respectful is a bit much.

If you really get down to brass tacks, it's indisputable that the respectful thing to do is to use Chris's preferred pronouns. And you can't play the game of "Chris doesn't count" or "Chris doesn't deserve respect" because you don't get to pick and choose who you respect in that way. The absolute right thing to do would be to use Chris's preferred pronouns in all contexts, past and present, moving forward, because that's how trans* works. It's retroactive, because it's fundamentally who you are, even if you didn't realize it.

So why am I not using Chris's preferred pronouns? A lot of it is sheer cowardice, not wanting to rock the boat in an audience that largely is a part of this community. On the other hand, I haven't seen any real backlash in the comments for my passing mention of the community's transphobia, or any mass unsubscription or such thing, so I might bring it up at some point.

The second reason is that Chris very much thought she was a man when she wrote Sonichu, and the fact that she didn't measure up to cultural depictions of masculinity was the engine of inner turmoil that drove Sonichu. The CWCki claims that there is "almost no real evidence" of Chris being trans, but when you break it down, most of the shit she's gotten up to is obviously the result of gender dysphoria, in combination with societal pressures that even cismen face (Chris's hatred of her virginity being the prime example). So yes, I will eventually have to bring it all up, probably in the final video was a "what happened next" epilogue to the comic review.

The third, most salient reason, is that Chris is also a character in the comic, and the Chris of the comics is very much male (see my point on Chris's dysphoria). To use separate pronouns for Chris the character and Chris the artist could become confusing to both me and the audience, especially in times when the line between the two is blurred. It would be easy for me to slip up, and I'd rather be consistently dubious than occasionally outright wrong.

So yes, using Chris's pronouns in all contexts is the respectful, correct, decent thing to do, and for anybody else I would do it without hesitation. But the circumstances I find myself in are so unique and so bizarre that I find it less of a hassle to just sidestep the issue. It's shitty, but it's where I'm at.

I don't understand what you mean by the community's transphobia. For the most part, I think we criticize Chris for being an out-of-shape, lazy, self-entitled asshole with the IQ of a fence post, not for not being a heterosexual male.

Maybe because there's a trend to dismiss Chris' sexual identity because it's so screwed up [such as the Sailor Moon Poster and what it amounted to]?

You are pretty rockin', DStecks. Thank you so much for addressing this. Maybe in the FAQ on your site or in the video descriptions you could raise the issue, just to let your audience know you're aware Chris is a trans woman and you're aware of the issue?

Because of stuff like this:

However, Chris is not a woman, and he never will be. Chris was born a man. He carries male genetics.

That is from Null's official intro to the Chris gender thread. And I hate to call out the mods, but that's a massively transphobic and archaic opinion that is still held by a lot of the community. Chris may be awful, but she is still a human being, deserving of the most basic respects, including referring to her as her true gender.

I think stating that Chris cannot naturally change his entire genetic code at this point is not massively transphobic, but realistic.

You can argue the first half, but the second half is legitimate. There's no treatment at this point that allows a person to completely change their gender; there are, however, treatments that allow for a person to change their appearance and change their hormonal patterns.

Also, Chris' true gender is another can of worms. Until he started the tomgirl thing, it was male. Chris might be no different from the teenage girl who claims to be a 'tucute transginger' in her Tumblr page, or he might be a legitimate trans woman who can't perform a full transition due to mental issues and a lack of resources.

We can't know, we can only guess.

I'm somewhere between:

the camp that CWC is basically a child who lacks the maturity and self-awareness to have a meaningful gender identity, and:

the camp that CWC wants to be a woman because CWC is a lazy asshole who thinks that women have it easier (in other words, a sexist male who wants the perceived benefits of womanhood without thinking about what gender actually is).

There's also CWC's hostile at best relationship with the mental health profession and the fact that CWC is an all-around mess of a human being.

I'm sorry. I'm not making any sense, am I? I guess what I want to say is that given CWC's other issues, I don't know if CWC's gender issues are real or just the manifestation of those other issues.

I still like you'r humour and input regarding Sonichu, but not convinced with the sketches inbetween, i would've prefer the old style of you sitting down and go through the nightmare that is Sonichu... Still a loyal subscriber nonetheless, maybe it's just me who doesn't get the storyarch, see it as constructive critisism :left:
