The Sequel to The Forest developed by Endnight Games. Really looking forward to this game. I really enjoyed the first one

Game Description I guess:
Sent to find a missing billionaire on a remote island, you find yourself in a cannibal-infested hellscape. Craft, build, and struggle to survive, alone or with friends, in this terrifying new open-world survival horror simulator.

I played through The Forest with a couple of friends about 2 years ago. It was fun but we encountered some pretty bad and annoying glitches throughout. The whole game kind of felt like it was in an early beta state and yet they called it finished.

I fully intend to play through The Forest 2 with that same group but we are giving it 6-12 months, at least, before we pick it up. If the first game was that buggy a few years in then I can't imagine the second game's launch will be in an acceptable state. The trailers do make it look much better than 1 though.

Interesting, I've played it a few times I personally haven't experienced any game breaking bugs or glitches. Then again I haven't played a lot of the multiplayer side.

Did he get himself a three legged and three armed mutant waifu in a night gown? That could be interesting.

The trailers and Steam page for this have been up for a while now, and I'm looking forward to it, potential jank and all. You might be playing a spoiler character from the first, which has some interesting implications in general. It looks like this one will focus a bit more on gunplay... not sure what to think about that. The flintlock was an interesting give-and-take before that could one-shot cannibals and did good damage to mutants.

There was a bunch of half-baked ideas that could have been interesting, like the sanity system that only did 1 thing and the nutrition and stat systems that did even less. It reminded me of Warframe with a bunch of its brain droppings scattered all over the place, but The Forest didn't make me hate myself.

Multiplayer is fun in a different way from the base game. For better or worse, it removes a lot of the tension if you're relatively coordinated; instead of sneaking around playing Naked & Afraid when the unga bunga go running around your base, you all sneak around because you just don't want to deal with them and get into huge fucking melees if you get spotted. One person standing lookout while the other two load up a log sled with rocks to build Hadrian's Wall, sees a bunch of cannibals rushing at you, and everyone whips out rocks-on-sticks and starts knocking out teeth like the most malevolent dentists known to man while talking mad shit and occasionally getting lit on fire.
It's great.

I don't know if it's a difference between builds or a mechanic the game will (attempt) to have, but her demeanor changes as the trailers progress: first she cowers and shies away from the fights, later she's spotting enemies for you, then finally she's just fucking shooting them on her own as pictured. I wonder how it's going to work.

The thing that made The Forest great and elevated it above all the other survival games was its atmosphere. The developers managed to nail the feeling of being alone and surrounded by cannibal freaks. It sure as hell doesn't feel like a power fantasy when you're huddling in your ramshackle fort while the little bastards probe your defenses, or when you come to a dark hole that you can't illuminate and you know damn well something must be down there.

I don't know if they'll be able to do it again, especially if they want guns to play a bigger role. Having to choose between clumsy melee weapons that can serve as a torch or a safe and effective bow that you won't be able to hit shit with if you can't see keeps enemy encounters tense even once you're experienced with the game.

SotF came out and i've already refunded it.

No hotkeys, you eat a berry one at a time and they removed some features from the first game.

I watched a livestream of this game, and the ending of the game made no sense to the point that even the game's ending was incomplete, in addition to the other stuff that aren't in the first game.

Yeah I wouldn't get this game yet if at all. It was planned for a full release this year, but then they switched it to early access only a month or so ago to "polish" it but it's missing more than just polish.

The game is very pretty and the skies look a lot better than the first game. The changing seasons add variety to the visuals. This is the best thing about the game.

They made the map a lot bigger but filled it with very little. I explored three caves and only one of them was large like they were in the first game. You pretty much have to use the GPS to find anything interesting because the map is largely empty, so that kills exploration. None of the POIs I discovered were remotely as interesting as the giant sinkhole with the mysterious door and the big cannibal village in the first game.

Melee combat doesn't seem much different than from the first game so it still feels like button mashing. Throwing objects like explosives seems a bit easier, though molotovs don't seem to do the kind of damage that they did in the first game so you will want grenades and time bombs for sure. You can still chop the bodies into parts but there are no effigies in the game yet so unless you want to eat them it's best to turn them into bones.

However, the bone armor kind of sucks. The enemies hit a lot harder even on normal difficulty so they tore through it like toilet paper. The creepy armor is slightly better and there is a new tech armor type that I didn't discover, but it doesn't seem worth crafting the early armors.

New mutant designs look cool but their behavior seems wonky at times. Sometimes they'll be really aggressive and charge at you and sometimes they'll bumble about like you're not there. In the caves it's usually best to run past them if you can because they aren't smart or fast enough to get you and some of them can tank a lot of damage. The Virginias in the first game seemed a lot more dangerous since they were harder to get away from. In the overworld, there are different types of cannibals and some of them are pretty strong so the overworld enemies showed the most improvement.

The building system is a mixed bag. Simple structures like protected fire pits are easy to understand and cool to build, but you have to play around with the system to figure out how to build bigger structures. Sometimes the extra things you can do to placed logs like sharpen the top into points for the defensive wall don't work, and there are no lockable doors and gates available yet so it's pointless to build a defensive base unless you're going for an open base with a trap corridor like in Rimworld. The game is currently missing several blueprints from the first one like all the boats, the effigies, some traps and some furniture, but there are plans to add more stuff in the future.

The water physics is odd which is probably why they didn't add the boats at launch. If a log plops into a body of water sometimes it launches high into the sky. Also, I never found a single fish to spear or trap in either the rivers or lakes I discovered, so the only way I could get fish is to have the NPC companion gather them.

Dead bodies and objects despawn too quickly. Now, having too many objects did cause some problems in early builds for the first game, but one of the cool things they wanted builders to try in this game was using rivers to transport logs downstream. You can't do that very well at the moment because a bunch will despawn.

Survival mechanics are dumbed down even more than the first game. Infection and sickness isn't present in the game yet (if it ever will be), so you don't have to worry about blood or rotten foods. All of the fresh water is drinkable so you don't have to purify it. The Sanity meter never worked in the first game and now it's gone in this one, which is a shame because I've played some games with interesting sanity mechanics. There appears to be fewer animals. The only aggressive animal I encountered was the shark, though there are supposedly orcas. I don't think there are any crocodiles or boars in this game. Food isn't much of a problem, anyway, since there are so many items to collect in the caves like MREs and canned food, and they will respawn if you reload the game.

I've interacted with two NPCS. You get Kelvin at the start and you control him by writing a command on a notepad and enduring a slow unskippable animation where you pin it to his chest or hand it to him. He's helpful with the drudgery of gathering, but he's not too bright so he will chop down the trees holding any of your treehouses and walk into fire pits all the time. He has trouble crossing larger bodies of water so he has to walk around until he finds a crossing point, though when I moved to an island he magically appeared at my base eventually. I didn't do much with the other NPC because she runs away a lot. I know that you can "tame" her and give her weapons to use but I didn't feel like it.

As for the story, I chose to stop playing the game instead of going through it because I read that large chunks of it are unfinished so you basically get the beginning portions and the end. From what I've gathered from others, the story is pretty crap compared to the first one, and the first game's wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be.

So far, it seems like the devs want to focus more on the multiplayer base building and halfass the other aspects of this game. It's possible that they will add a lot during the early access period, but even the first game feels unfinished in parts and that probably has to do with it being in early access for several years. I don't mind an early access game. I enjoy Project Zomboid and Valheim, for example, but Sons Of The Forest is currently lacking in content and I got bored of it quickly.

I've already sunk 17 hours into the game. Thus far I've really been enjoying the atmosphere and the enemy roster, but I think I've almost exhausted the content. As in the first game, exploring caves makes up the meat of the experience and it's just as tense as ever, although if you're so inclined it's cheap and easy to set up tents that serve as save points just about anywhere. You can use them even when there's a mutant breathing down your neck; it's a step removed from having a quicksave key.

So far I've found six rather lengthy areas to explore. Caves feel very samey and tend to be packed with dozens or well over a hundred enemies, but you're guaranteed a reward of some new piece of equipment at the end so enduring the slog feels rewarding at least. There doesn't seem to be much of anything outside the southern part of the island. There are markers for caves sparsely dotted over the central and northern parts, but a lot of these are just single chambers with a few loot crates and no enemies.

Enemies are spongy as all hell and will kill you in 2-3 hits on hard mode. If you intend to fight, then armor is a must. A headshot from your bow or a thrown spear will kill most common enemies unless they happen to be wearing a helmet. More dangerous mutants don't appear to take extra damage from headshots, and they'll eat two grenades or explosive charges before going down, so have fun with that.

All in all I've enjoyed my time quite a bit, but I knew exactly what I was going to be getting into. The first game was one of the first early access titles ever, and it took a long ass time to get to where it is today. In comparison the sequel feels far more polished and feature complete. As far as I can tell most of what needs to be done is adding more locations to explore, and I don't anticipate that it will take that long, but hey it's called "Eternal Access" for a reason.

What stood out the most to me is that the map is very big. Probably even too big. I dread trekking, I hope we'll get some kind of vehicle eventually. Also the ending was... something, but it's EA, so.

First one has been great so far, just finished it a couple of days ago with a couple of friends and we were satisfied with it. Might pick this one down the line

I got this when it released (it actually broke Steam servers that day) but it won't run on my PC at all despite being well above the recommended specs.

Sucks because I was really looking forward to it but the first games launch was just as shit. I'll just have to wait for a few optimization passes.

Just like the first forest, this won't be worth buying until ~2 years after, the story is incomplete, the gear system / construction system is incomplete, and in short you'll just eat the delicious sauce now but have none of the meat.

And i sure as fuck regret playing through the forest before it was finished, the campaign would've been much more fun with everything in place.

I spent six hours deforesting the entire island to build a nice 6x4 log cabin and befriended the mutant waifu just for her to disappear when I went to explore a cave. At least I still have Kevin feeding my log cabin addiction.

Yeah, it's really undercooked for now, don't remember the caves dragging this much in the first one but some of the actual human bunkers I found very interesting and great to look at, at least the one or two that were well lit, not lighting things properly is the game's thing though so you take what you can get.
