Sony forces Japanese developers to censor sexual content - For Japanese audiences too.

Meanwhile, Nintendo are like "Censorship is bad, okay? We have ratings systems and parental controls for a reason.":

I never thought I'd see the day when Sony and Microsoft would sell out to the moral guardians and Nintendo would be the one standing against censorship, yet here we are.

As recently as the Wii, Nintendo's American branch was still pushing for censorship, although not to the same extent as the SNES or even the N64 eras, since we did get House of the Dead: Overkill and a couple of other M-rated games on that platform, but the Wii was still mostly a console for kiddie games and sports titles.

I think with Nintendo loosening censorship standards while Sony and Microsoft are caving to them and the fact that the Switch is actively pushing for third-party support instead of relying too heavily on first-party IP's (since that was a major issue in the days of Gamecube and Wii, and it's arguably a major reason why the Wii U flopped so badly) I think we're going to see Nintendo make a major comeback and win the Ninth Generation console wars.

Usually the first console that comes out in a generation is the first one to go and is usually a failure (Sega Dreamcast being the prime example, the Wii U is another less extreme example) with the only recent exception being the Xbox 360 in the Seventh Generation of consoles, but the Xbox 360 still finished in second place because the Wii was a massive success at launch thanks to a low price and a then-novel gimmick, and Microsoft was only able to keep a lead over Sony because of the PS3's disastrous launch.

Sony recovered and bounced back from the PS3's initial start, but this censorship policy may hurt them when the PS5 launches since it's gonna hurt a lot of Japanese developers as well as those Western developers who are neither wealthy enough to bribe their way out or woke enough to deflect scrutiny.

We're probably going to see the PS5 release around late 2020, although I would not be surprised if it gets pushed back to 2021. SJW culture is already getting a noticeable backlash among consumers and depending on how things play out between now and the PS5's launch, the SJW bubble may burst completely or it may be weakened enough that Sony can change their policies down the line, particularly if it starts hurting sales in a big way.

Either way, I'll probably be buying a Switch later this year, and I'm probably going to avoid getting a PS5 at launch.

I was considering getting a Scarlett over a PS5, until I read this elephant shit.

Now I just want a good PC and a Switch for the 2020s. I’ll keep my PS4 around for the games that’ll likely never go multiplat like Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, Dad of War, and presumably Death Stranding, but I have lost all desire to support the new consoles of either MS or Sony these days

I'm gonna mainly be focused on Switch and I will still play my PS4, but I am not going to buy the new Xbox at all.

I may get a PS5 a year or two after launch if the price is right, but only because GTA VI is probably going to be a Ninth Generation release and even if Nintendo's now willing to allow a main series GTA game on their consoles, I'm not sure if the Switch hardware could handle GTA VI since the prevailing rumor is that Rockstar is waiting for the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett to launch before announcing the next GTA game.

Say what you will about the bullshit in GTA Online and RDR Online, but Rockstar is probably one of only two Western gaming companies that isn't fully cucked by SJW nonsense (the other being CD Project Red) although that's mainly due to their flagship franchise getting a grandfather clause of sorts with edgy content.

There's no way you can make a "woke" Grand Theft Auto game, since the game's entire premise runs on being a villain protagonist.

There’s also id software, but that’s because they’ve even admitted that nobody plays Doom for fucking story

Long before joining this forum I made the prediction that social justice and ironic hipster fashion are going to be to the 2010s what flares and disco were to the 70s, hippies and tie dye were to the 60s, or extreme sports and surfer lingo were to the 90s.

We are already seeing them die off in real time. I don't mean Trump and Brexit, but in real life. When was the last time you saw someone in skinny jeans and blue hair in the super market? At E3 people who acted like SJWs didn't dress like SJWs. All of their big name SJW creators are dying when it comes to audience. Feminist Frequency is broke, Extra Credits have been bleeding fans since their stupid nazi video. ResetEra is a laughing stock. The list goes on and on.

Social justice will be always be around, but it's time in the mainstream is done. It's going to take a few years for large corporations to catch up, so I expect woke reboots and pandering to continue into 2024.

Kinda sad that I’m likely not getting a PS5 thanks to this shit, a God of War 5 or Spiderman 2 sounds fun.

At least on the Xbox side, I’ll likely be able to play Halo Infinite, FH5, etc on my hypothetical gaming PC and on Steam no less too

I hear Xbox is more receptive to fan feedback than Sony, so hopefully they’ll reverse this “anti-free speech” bullshit.

Then again, if that happens, they’ll probably just cry to Kotaku about the mean Misogynerds bullied them.

It doesn’t seem like the “defenders of joy” have done anything on Sony’s level of insanity yet, but Phil’s interview does leave a scary precedent. For now, we play the waiting game when it comes to Xbox.

On the up side, they’ve basically confirmed that every MS Studios release from here on out is also on Steam, so at least there’s that

Nintendo's greatest asset is their First Party is still remarkably Robust. You can have a shitty Third Party library and it wouldn't do anything to hurt their main line of profit. They don't need to censor anything since any games they have for the third party isn't competing with the First Party Games for profit

Also, they’re basically now doing what Sony did from 2010-2017, attracting smaller, more niche Japanese devs like Grasshopper, Acquire, and Platninum to make 3rd party/timed exclusives for them. (Like what Sony used to do with companies like RGG studios, SNK, and Vanillaware before mid-to-late 2018 )

Resetera is one of the largest and most well respected gaming forums.

Still with Judgment having no censorship. It makes me wonder what the fuck is going on when Saori unbuttons her top to show cleavage or Yagami's victory lap causing a breezy upskirt.

I always thought it was just like the Fundie bullshit I grew up under in the late 90s-early 2000s but from the other side of the political spectrum.

Tfw I spent like 2 hours making sure sure Dragon’s Crown Pro wasn’t censored on PS4 because it having an edited cover in America spooked me.

Thankfully, the actual game was untouched because the censorship campaign began around August 2018 and DCP came out around May 2018.

Being sick makes me do a lot of stupid shit

Microsoft, and Sony both kinda put themselves in a hole over their last consoles, and I feel like they think they can pander to SJWs to get out of that hole, but now they're digging it deeper. The last console generation made me switch entirely over to the PC, along with a lot of other people, and I suspect that you could be right, and this could end up making Nintendo the console king. Honestly, if I were Nintendo, I'd make a phone app feature for my next console, which allowed for parental controls, and the parent to see whatever the kid is buying, or playing. Something like this could allow them to market to both kids, and adults. You could, also do some pretty cool things with such an app, like talk to your online friends over it, and buy games directly from it.

Another thing I'd do if I were Nintendo, and wanted to push Sony, and Microsoft out of the console market, is I'd make the console have plug, and play graphics' cards, and ram. They did it once before with the Nintendo 64 ram expansion, so it's not entirely unprecedented, and honestly, I've always felt like it would be more profitable for consoles to sell Graphics' card, and ram upgrades, than new consoles every few years. There's a ton of people who have 3,000 bucks to drop on something like the GTX Titan Z, but don't know enough about computers to actually install one.

I'm doubtful we'll ever see a mainline GTA game on a Nintendo platform. Rockstar North (then DMA) and Nintendo had issue making Body Harvest and RN has really stayed away from them. All due to the Meddling Nintendo did and bankrupting the company. GTA V on the Switch is a no brainer and I bet Take 2 wants it on there (along with RDR2), but I bet RN have final say and they probably won't.

No think it's easier to just make a new system. Partly because construction costs will continually drop with one design. But it also doesn't split the playerbase and the gaming library into "require this plug in expansion" for a console. I remember the Sega Saturn having this issue, where if you didn't have the memory expansion, some of the best games on the system were locked out to you.

The old saying "keep it simple, stupid" comes to mind.

You also run into the problem the late N64 and 3DS games had. Games that technically run without the upgrade, but they run so badly that it's not worth bothering with.

One of the big selling points of consoles is that they are plug and play. No need for drivers updates, patches, or keeping track of hardware specs. Consoles have been throwing that away in recent generations. It's understandable why they are doing this, but we reached the point long ago where buying a new game means sitting for an hour or 3 while it updates, installs, updates again, patches the firmware, and updates again.

Me and my buddies have pondered whether or not there’s now an unspoken “PS4 tax” at Sony where if a Japanese company regularly sells enough game copies (like RGG Studios, Atlus, or Namco), they’ll be allowed to release the game uncut with all panties, cleavage, butts, etc in-tact, while the “undesirables” (like Compile Heart or Tamsoft) have to jump through extra hoops to do basic shit with their equally risque games.

Might explain why DMC5 only got uncut AFTER selling 2 million units
