Playstation 5 launched 6 fucking years ago and there is barely, if any, reason at all to own the thing. This latest state of play has changed nothing to this statement.

With the cancellation of TLOU multiplayer one of the 10+ planned live service Sony games is dead::
https://www.naughtydog.com/blog/an_update_on_the_last_of_us_online https://www.polygon.com/23954006/sony-playstation-live-service-games-marathon-last-of-us-factions Since the live-service thing was definitely Jim Ryan long term plan, I can see most of these games getting shitcanned one by one, with maybe the exception of Marathon.
I made this post 2 months prior to Helldiver 2 release and almost a full year prior to the Concord disaster, since then Sony decided to announce 2 more live service games (4:LOOP and Horizon Hunters Gahering) and now one question lingers:
Are Helldivers 2 profits that good to justify Sony keep trying, despite the Concord disaster and the shitshow that is Marathon and Fairgames development?

I doubt it. It's probably just more like "Helldivers 2 is actually generating more than zero revenue, so it is technically possible and we just need to keep trying again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and fucking again until we hit paydirt! We're nearly there! It'll happen soon! It's just random so we just have to keep doing it until it works! Where's my fucking cocaine, Bob?!?!"

If they remove the sex minigame in the God of War remake trilogy, we riot.

There is not a chance in Tartarus we are getting a faithful recreation of the original Greek Arc in the trilogy remake. It is just going to be a re-skin of over-the-shoulder "Dad of War" oversimplified and hand-holdy experience for modern audiences. The idea of attractive female nudity, let alone anything remotely hinting heterosexual intercourse made by the people now working at this studio is simply impossible. Sharpen your pitchfork and oil the torches because we should expect what is already obvious.

Sony Commissar: "Real Live-Service has never been tried comrade, all those previous failed attempts, wasted resources and studios ruined weren't real live-service."

Scott the Woz, of all people, recently put out a genuinely good breakdown of why this generation of gaming feels pointless (with a particular focus on Soyn) - now he doesn't get it 100% right (for example, he says he legitimately enjoys Ghost of Yotei and Horizon: Forbidden West) but the overall argument is still sound

Everything interesting on the SoP is just going to end up on PC anyways. Going to be interesting when the PS6 launches at almost a grand. Will Soyny fans go out and buy it after how bad this generation has been?

Look I at least own up to buying a PS5 when I did partly because I assumed going off prior gens we were at the point that PS4 game releases would slow down if not outright stop, and mostly because my PS4 sounded like a damn jet engine the last few times I had booted it up and it needed to be replaced, so might as well upgrade. This generation has been so bad that the PS5 game that has the most play time on that thing is Genshin Goddamn Impact, followed by a handful of JRPGs that are at nowhere near the same play time. Again - a Free to Play Gacha Game has gotten more play time out of me than anything Sony has shat out themselves.

There isn't a chance in fuck I'm buying a PS6, especially at that price, when I bought a PC for just over that price point. That isn't going to stop the sportsball and FPS crowds from buying the new thing, but considering the state of this console gen? I'm not entirely sure that those crowds will be enough.

I think we all had that assumption and that this gen would be like previous gens. But my gawd, the generation with the most fidelity and canvas to work with, has just been shit. The industry has been flush with the most cash and all we got for the most part are soulless, lifeless games that are overmonitized.

The only game I truly feel is next gen is the new GTA. And who knows how anti-consumer this game is. For a game in the billions for a budget and marketing, it’s going to be safe with guardrails to appeal to everyone. And I bet the PC version is going to have some of the most intrusive DRM.

Maybe I’m wrong and the game will be one of the best games of time. But it’s insane to me that the whole AAA industry are closely watching the release of one game.

When the PS5 launched it was an incredibly powerful machine for the price. They were £399 on launch in the UK.
The launch window looked good and despite covid, Jim Ryan and Sony had a plan to get games to gamers, with a wide variety of genres on offer.

Then Jim left - I think he saw the writing on the wall with the new CEO. After that, Hulst was bumped up and it all went to shit afterwards. Games cancelled left and right, over-focus on Horizon, studios allowed to be lazy and put out crap, or nothing at all. The discipline was completely gone.

Then the hits kept coming. Price rises, lack of games, cancelling of projects people wanted, VR completely abandoned even though it could have been a money-spinner, Bungie refusing to work, more horizon games, pushing PC ports and cross-platform games, the unfinished PS5PRO.

We all saw this coming years ago, we even laughed that we knew what was coming. And here it is. It should be of no surprise.

And don't let the recent SOP fool you, 95% of those games were multi-platform, but Sony needs you to believe that they have games, for when they drop the announcement of a handheld over Christmas.

Fucking thing will sell a gazillion copies no matter what they do, which won't have any bearing on its quality, and it'll probably single-handedly salvage the PS6's launch as well.
dunno man, hype can easily turn into the opposite, even more in cases when there's really no alternative and once a narrative sets in.

doubt it's gonna happen, but it's possible enough zoomers played enough out of gta5 they have much less interest in 6 than expected, especially the multiplayer ("what do you mean those rockstar niggers want me to start from scratch for the same shit?!"). they tried with rdr2 but even if people lauded the game the multiplayer, the cashcow rockstar was hoping for, is dead. if people had no interest in "gta, but western", "gta, but the same" seems like an even harder sell.

and that's all before considering how much fucking money the game already ate up take two wants to recoup.

Oh yeah, they're in a rough spot with GTA6 regardless of critical acclaim. They've pissed away so much cash developing it, it has to do phenomenal numbers to have any chance of breaking even. I can understand why they're taking their time and showing hesitance at giving people more than brief peeks at the game. They're understandably nervous. Nothing but a home run will do.

The only reason I even own one is that my PS4 broke and I camped the Goymart app until I found one for like $250.

There wasn't any reason to get another PS4 when it was only like $100 more.

I'm really not expecting Sony to release the damn thing until 2028 at the earliest, it might even slip to 2029. If PS6 is going to be a grand how exactly is Sony expecting to solidify a viable install base with that kind of price structure? They are going to lump the PS5 online user numbers together with PS6 users for far longer than they are doing now with PS4 users just to convince stockholders that everything is business as usual.

If they are already having a hard time convincing some of the PS4 user base to upgrade, imagine how hard is it going to be from the PS5 to PS6 transition considering how difficult it is to justify buying expensive new hardware when the visual inprovements are marginal at best. We are talking the PS5 staying active well over a decade and a half at this rate.

That aside there is the issue of AI throwing the entire consumer electronic sector into disarray: the crowd that usually upgraded after a year or two of discounts cannot count on this option anymore. To see hardware never going down in price during their entire lifespan because we are moving from one manufactured crisis into another: Crypto, Covid, now AI. I cannot express into words how dystopian this feels.

The PS6 cannot be as good as it needs to be. If it is, it would cost about as much as a PC but with less games. It would be prohibitively expensive for the average consumer and a waste of money for the high end consumer. There would be no demographic outside the hardcore Sonyponies and no console can live on that.
