I made this post 2 months prior to Helldiver 2 release and almost a full year prior to the Concord disaster, since then Sony decided to announce 2 more live service games (4:LOOP and Horizon Hunters Gahering) and now one question lingers:With the cancellation of TLOU multiplayer one of the 10+ planned live service Sony games is dead::
https://www.naughtydog.com/blog/an_update_on_the_last_of_us_online https://www.polygon.com/23954006/sony-playstation-live-service-games-marathon-last-of-us-factions Since the live-service thing was definitely Jim Ryan long term plan, I can see most of these games getting shitcanned one by one, with maybe the exception of Marathon.
I doubt it. It's probably just more like "Helldivers 2 is actually generating more than zero revenue, so it is technically possible and we just need to keep trying again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and fucking again until we hit paydirt! We're nearly there! It'll happen soon! It's just random so we just have to keep doing it until it works! Where's my fucking cocaine, Bob?!?!"Are Helldivers 2 profits that good to justify Sony keep trying, despite the Concord disaster and the shitshow that is Marathon and Fairgames development?
If they remove the sex minigame in the God of War remake trilogy, we riot.

Scott the Woz, of all people, recently put out a genuinely good breakdown of why this generation of gaming feels pointless (with a particular focus on Soyn) - now he doesn't get it 100% right (for example, he says he legitimately enjoys Ghost of Yotei and Horizon: Forbidden West) but the overall argument is still soundPlaystation 5 launched 6 fucking years ago and there is barely, if any, reason at all to own the thing. This latest state of play has changed nothing to this statement.
Everything interesting on the SoP is just going to end up on PC anyways. Going to be interesting when the PS6 launches at almost a grand. Will Soyny fans go out and buy it after how bad this generation has been?Playstation 5 launched 6 fucking years ago and there is barely, if any, reason at all to own the thing. Nah, they'll lease it, own nothing, and be happy.Everything interesting on the SoP is just going to end up on PC anyways. Going to be interesting when the PS6 launches at almost a grand. Will Soyny fans go out and buy it after how bad this generation has been?
Look I at least own up to buying a PS5 when I did partly because I assumed going off prior gens we were at the point that PS4 game releases would slow down if not outright stop, and mostly because my PS4 sounded like a damn jet engine the last few times I had booted it up and it needed to be replaced, so might as well upgrade. This generation has been so bad that the PS5 game that has the most play time on that thing is Genshin Goddamn Impact, followed by a handful of JRPGs that are at nowhere near the same play time. Again - a Free to Play Gacha Game has gotten more play time out of me than anything Sony has shat out themselves.Going to be interesting when the PS6 launches at almost a grand. Will Soyny fans go out and buy it after how bad this generation has been?

Will that crowd exist next gen, outside of maybe american ghettos? cod-bros and fifa-bros are a dying breed here. That isn't going to stop the sportsball and FPS crowds from buying the new thing, but considering the state of this console gen? I'm not entirely sure that those crowds will be enough.
I think we all had that assumption and that this gen would be like previous gens. But my gawd, the generation with the most fidelity and canvas to work with, has just been shit. The industry has been flush with the most cash and all we got for the most part are soulless, lifeless games that are overmonitized.Look I at least own up to buying a PS5 when I did partly because I assumed going off prior gens we were at the point that PS4 game releases would slow down if not outright stop
dunno man, hype can easily turn into the opposite, even more in cases when there's really no alternative and once a narrative sets in.Fucking thing will sell a gazillion copies no matter what they do, which won't have any bearing on its quality, and it'll probably single-handedly salvage the PS6's launch as well.
Oh yeah, they're in a rough spot with GTA6 regardless of critical acclaim. They've pissed away so much cash developing it, it has to do phenomenal numbers to have any chance of breaking even. I can understand why they're taking their time and showing hesitance at giving people more than brief peeks at the game. They're understandably nervous. Nothing but a home run will do.and that's all before considering how much fucking money the game already ate up take two wants to recoup.
They’ll make it up with microtransactions and subscriptions during the lifetime of the game. They've pissed away so much cash developing it, it has to do phenomenal numbers to have any chance of breaking even
The only reason I even own one is that my PS4 broke and I camped the Goymart app until I found one for like $250.Playstation 5 launched 6 fucking years ago and there is barely, if any, reason at all to own the thing. This latest state of play has changed nothing to this statement.

The PS6 cannot be as good as it needs to be. If it is, it would cost about as much as a PC but with less games. It would be prohibitively expensive for the average consumer and a waste of money for the high end consumer. There would be no demographic outside the hardcore Sonyponies and no console can live on that.I'm really not expecting Sony to release the damn thing until 2028 at the earliest, it might even slip to 2029. If PS6 is going to be a grand how exactly is Sony expecting to solidify a viable install base with that kind of price structure? They are going to lump the PS5 online user numbers together with PS6 users for far longer than they are doing now with PS4 users just to convince stockholders that everything is business as usual.
If they are already having a hard time convincing some of the PS4 user base to upgrade, imagine how hard is it going to be from the PS5 to PS6 transition considering how difficult it is to justify buying expensive new hardware when the visual inprovements are marginal at best. We are talking the PS5 staying active well over a decade and a half at this rate.
That aside there is the issue of AI throwing the entire consumer electronic sector into disarray: the crowd that usually upgraded after a year or two of discounts cannot count on this option anymore. To see hardware never going down in price during their entire lifespan because we are moving from one manufactured crisis into another: Crypto, Covid, now AI. I cannot express into words how dystopian this feels.
That plus the free to play and sports gamers is the only audience remaining. There would be no demographic outside the hardcore Sonyponies and no console can live on that.
I would love to get the new NCAA football game. But everyone says that once the initial phase of playing a new ncaa game wears off, it’s just a meh game.sports gamers
