I completely forgot Killzone existed, and how fucking hard they pushed that for PS3 at launch. Even the PS2 version was a piece of shit so it's anyone's guess why thought it could compete with Halo.

And now they're saddled with keeping things exclusive... for a limited time and then it jumps to PC.
Killzone was literally designed to be a mix of Halo and COD due to them being popular at the time. To be fair, the games industry was extremely focused on FPS at the time and any company without one…Nintendo…was left behind to rot. The best thing that series made was Radec. Other than Killzone, Sony also pushed Resistance for a while, a franchise that helped lead to the falling out with Insomniac, though, that was moreso due to Insomniac biting off way more than they can chew and over promising shit to Sony.

Yeah Resistance was another one they tried hard to make a thing. COD was cleaning house in that genre at the time shitting out the same game over and over and then erupted with Modern Warfare. Which is why they just did it again since everything is nostalgia bait.

I'm going through God of War: Ragnarok right now, and wondering how they still can't make a fucking balanced combat system. This game has so many fucking design errors and flaws in it, if I was QA, I'd send it back and tell them to fix their bullshit and why they're wrong. And it's not like these problems are new, they're things that were figured out by other developers in the PS2/3 era. But it's God of War and their Santa Monica studio, so 10/10 in everything, especially the combat, because most people can't see the design flaws when they're too busy jerking off to the gore porn.

I seriously think that with modern AAA studios, they figure that if they throw enough money at something it cannot fail, so they don't even bother with actually designing anything competently anymore

The sad thing is, if they weren't so up their ass about making things cinematic or whatever, they problems wouldn't be too hard to fix; but the devs think they're smarter than the playerbase, and have some horrible fucking camera design decisions for combat. To include a borderline useless lock-on mechanic and what can only be called aim-assist like we're in a fucking FPS. I know where and what I want to fucking look at, I shouldn't have to fight what the game wants me to look at when I'm in the middle of a fucking battle.

Killzone 3 and Mercenary were good imo, but yeah, KZ1 was trash.

When was it you think they lost their grip on the industry? IMO it's somewhere at the end of the PS3's lifecycle going into PS4.

Sony was a juggernaut when all their focus was just shitting out games. Plenty were bad, especially on PS1 but they endlessly stacked the library and I feel had an even stronger grip with PS2 even up against competition with Xbox and Gamecube.

Sony's problem has always been hubris. After debuting to huge success with the PS1, and even more with the PS2, Kutaragi had at least partially designed the PS3's architecture to be purposely difficult to weed out the trash and make devs earn their way onto the platform, which ended up with the platform not picking up steam until the 360's own issues with hardware quality became so obvious even normies turned against it. The rough start to the PS3 had them purge Kutaragi and the perpetual failure Phil Harrison, and bring in Cerny, who's MO is to keep everything no-nonsense, so unlike Microsoft didn't force in any horseshit like a hard Kinect requirement or focus on the dying medium of cable TV. So for a gamer, the choice was between a console that was stronger, cheaper, and didn't have ads shouting KINECT TV KINECT TV, and the other one whose couple big franchises where the last entries were stinkers (Halo, Gears). Then here Sony is now with their studios that collectively created the idea of a Prestige Game that are so far up their ass based on past laurels that they'd rather put out nothing instead of something that's a bit silly but still fun.

I don't think Sony wants to go that route again since nothing can go head to head with Nintendo. Although, if it can do both that might be a game changer. Just give it games to play and not just remasters of PS4-5 games.

I would imagine the development of such a thing would be an even worse clusterfuck than how PS5 was developed.
Both the Switch and Steam Deck proved there is a huge and thriving demand for portable devices in the global market, whereas SIE would rather split and waste resources on the upcoming PSVR2 for a more niche audience.

But the biggest problem for Sony is that the Switch managed to undo nearly three full decades of damaged relationship between Nintendo and third-parties (something that Playstation has been mainly relying on without much effort as Nintendo often struggled to get that right). Now you have a hybrid system (that acts both as a home and portable console) which can play Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, Fire Emblem, Smash, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Monster Hunter, Nier, Dark Souls, Disgaea, Skyrim, Earth Defense Force, Vanillaware, Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, Crash Bandicoot, Saint Row, Ninja Gaiden, Borderlands, Warriors/musou games, Portal, Serious Sam, Tony Hawk, Atelier, Danganronpa, etc.

This list can keep going, but I think the point is clear. At this point, there is an absurd abundance of third-party support on the Switch never seen before on a Nintendo console since ages ago. While it is obviously never going to get every game, due to its limited hardware, it’s still remarkable just how much it ended up getting. People within a circle of friends/family can own a Switch, share a bunch of games for multiplayer, and individually find other games that fit their own tastes.

While SIE will get the western AAA third-party support for the rest of the PS5's life, its disdain for the japanese market has depleted the goodwill of the japanese dev support there. It won't certainly get better if Nintendo were to release a sucessor that fixes some of the current hardware shortcomings and could carry the momentum when transitioning to the next system (something that Nintendo also had problems with in the past).

The fact SIE considers the Microsoft-Activision deal (namely Call of Duty) to be a big enough to break the Playstation's success is rather sad too. It further shows how little the executive suits at California think of the Playstation brand.

I don't see an issue with Remakes that fully modernize it (Resi 2, FF7 in ways), aren't avaliable on previous consoles, or just look super nice (Dead Space, Halo 2). Remakes aren't the issue, it's that a lot of developers just don't know what they're doing, or are TOO profit-driven like Blizzard. You can make a great product AND get a lot of money, don't have to milk us for every cent... But I'm just talking to the choir.
Resi 2 was fine but Resi 3 uggoed up the chick on purpose and Resi 4 is covering up the chick Islamic style to hide any trace of boobs.

Dead Space uggoed up the chicks, inserted niggers everywhere and added trigger warnings. I don't like modern remakes.

“If you’d like to learn more about the evils of capitalism and the corporations that exploit it, buy our remake of a 15 year old game for only $59.99”

The original dead space game runs super on a modern pc. I will stick to that one on my steam collection.

They pushed Killzone: Shadow Fall really hard for PS4, and that game just looked like the most generic FPS I'd ever seen. The series died after that.

Everything about that series seemed so generic, like a game you'd see in the background of The Simpsons. Even the name fits. You can imagine a "Killzone" arcade machine next to "Slaughter City" and "Hell Fighters" or something.

If it isn't God of War, Sony treats their IPs like shit. A good example of this I think is to bring up Playstation Allstars, which I'm sure like most of the IPs in it, most people have forgotten about. How many of the fighters continue to even be mentioned in passing by Sony? Three. Two of which are God of War characters.

One sticker in my side is they own the rights to a JRPG fan fav. A cult classic that many hold to be one of the best of the PS1 generation. Legend of Dragoon. They could make a new game. They could remaster that game. They could simply release it. Instead Legend of Dragoon exists to be forgotten like the retard child Sony wants to cut out of their family portraits.

I can relate.
