>it's already outsold the N64 and Genesis
I don't care how many of those 41 million are scalpers, that's just depressing.
Don't think of it like that, the games market was so much smaller in total prior to 2000. Look at the NES, it had total worldwide domination that even the PS2 could envy (suck it down, euros) and barely cracked 60 million.

Yeah, the PSP, which people sometimes incorrectly call a flop, sold plenty more than NES. It was just a different time when Sega Genesis was around.

What do you mean PS5 is not selling well? It's already the 17th highest selling game console at 41.7 million units before it's 3rd birthday.
Why no one seems to be able to sell an exclusive on that console is anyone's guess.

JFC, 40 million consoles sold and one of the few exclusive titles is underperforming? And Here I thought there were only 15m PS5s out there, but with 40m consoles the numbers of sales ff16 managed is plain embarassing.

As a game console, the PlayStation 5 sucks. But, it's a status symbol from an established brand, so it sells to the same kind of people who buy iPhones and think Androids are for poors, despite Android phones of equal caliber matching or exceeding the price of iPhones. It wouldn't surprise me at all if PS5 turned out to have a higher-than-usual number of players who only ever buy Madden/FIFA and maybe CoD.

If the PS5 keeps up the awful library and hostile, pro-LGBTQIAJX+ branding throughout the entire generation, there'll be a smooth decline in PS6 sales, but there'll still be a sizeable amount of sales. Even the Walkman persisted well into the CD era.

There is one every generation. When the Xbox 360 was on top, it was the console of choice for people who only buy FIFA and maybe the latest COD. When the PS4 came out on top, same thing, PS5 just continues the pattern.

A lot of people I know are using their PS5s almost exclusively for streaming services.

It wouldn't surprise me if Playstation just sorta became the normie's answer to watching netflix or hulu, and they're just not aware of the existance of things like Roku or the Amazon Firestick

It's the answer for people in their 30s and 40s who:
  • used their PS1 for games as a child
  • used their PS2 for DVDs as a teenager
  • used their PS3 for Blu-rays and streaming services in college
  • used their PS4 for streaming services over the last decade
And now they have a PS5 because that's what they know, price and quality be damned. Even though it's the most expensive streaming box you can buy. I guess that makes it a giffen good.

I really wish all the streaming services were on Switch. It's kinda nuts how it only has a few, despite having an anything goes eShop that sells mobile games and untranslated visual novels.

It makes me think Nintendo and Netflix had some sort of falling out. There's absolutely no reason for Netflix to not be on Switch, especially considering it was on Wii U, Wii, and even 3DS.

I find it pretty funny that the only reason why the Xbox 360 was the most successful Microsoft console was because literally everyone had to buy at least two or three of 'em (myself included) because it was a defective console, which would explain why Microsoft never repeated that success again.

It would just be a Veblen good since people buy it for status and that is how it gets its "value". Giffen goods technically arise when the price of a staple rises so much people can't afford superior products and thus are forced to consume more of the staple. Although a PS5 isn't really a Veblen good either, considering people who really want to flex buy a RTX 4090 when they only play minecraft.

Xbox One was actually a pretty solid console, but they nuked its reputation right out of the gate with all sorts of retardation. Mine outlasted my PS4, and I think I used it even more.

I mean that’s why most of us here hate on Sony so much because it used to be fucking awesome. There was a time that just getting a PlayStation meant you were going to have good games to play. Now it’s just a overpriced toy for redditors and black people to play their free to play Chinese games on… oh and Spider-Man too I guess…. Until that comes out on PC haha.
Playstation heavily relied on third-parties and now that they're released everywhere (on PC and Switch namely, even Xbox Series gets its share), that identity pretty much melted off so it's now just a generic gaming box aiming to be a luxury brand item. Doesn't help that SIE reduced its first-party output into nothingness too.

And yeah, the PSP was the first Playstation system I owned and made me discover a lot of japanese vidya I wasn't aware before. It's rather sad how the brand ended up to be now.

that has always been the case. even TLOU1 only allegedly sold over 20 million units by october 2019, 5 years after release and two platforms. when the ps4 alone hit 100 million consoles sold by july 2019.
meanwhile (tbf across 6 platforms):
"Life to date, FIFA 19 full game unit sales are roughly flat to FIFA 18 and slightly below our expectations," he said. "We believe the underperformance was driven by the intense competition throughout the year. It is possible that the success of World Cup promotions pulled FIFA 19 sales into FIFA 18, given that during Calendar 2018, we sold more copies of FIFA than ever before. The fiscal year-to-date sales of FIFA 19 are approximately 20 million units, and we've sold over three million units of FIFA 18 this fiscal year too. And as Andrew said, FIFA 19 was the best-selling console game in Europe in the Calendar 2018."
https://web.archive.org/web/2020022...-sales-flat-thanks-to-fifa-18-says-ea-1989300

cba to break it down further, however: "And as Andrew said, FIFA 19 was the best-selling console game in Europe in the Calendar 2018." versus sony "I don't think market-share's any less than 70%, and frequently greater than 90% in continental Europe." in 2015.

that's with TLOU1 being among sony's biggest exclusive. sony exclusives always sold like shit in comparison, it's probably the main reason people called the MUH EXCLUSIVES strategy fucking retarded, and also explains why sony was kvetching about COD so hard.

Well, that and it was actually a decent system with actual exclusives, and had a headstart which probably didn't hurt.

Doesn't that include bundles? Here you go, +3 copies of their shittiest games.

Edit: I thought I heard they count free PS+ games as "sales" too lol

Nintendo didn’t want children to watch Cuties on their Switch, and that was a step too far for Netflix.

There is a lot of content on Netflix that nintendo would consider highly inappropriate.

Plus I think the Netflix app is just a wrapper for the web browser, and Nintendo refuses to add a browser for some meaningless reason.

The 3ds and Wii U and I think Wii to some extent got cracked through the web browser, that's why they are averse to it. The Switch still has one for when you share to Twitter that if you clicked a link on Twitter would let you go to other sites, but it was using a different webkit and not an ancient version of Opera with a bajillion exploits, and you know, the actual Tegra SOC had an exploit instead which is much better than running unsigned code through a website.

PS4 and 5 having no browser is for the same reason, PS3 got cracked via the browser.
