The roster in PlayStation All-Stars was so fucking pathetic that it didn't have the first five or so characters you would associate with PlayStation. No Crash, no Spyro, no Lara Croft, no Solid Snake, no Cloud Strife, no Jill Valentine and no Abe.
And the good characters they did have were bad versions (Dante) or locked away as DLC (Kat). That game had a ton of potential, I don't know how they screwed up so badly.
Since the live-service thing was definitely Jim Ryan long term plan, I can see most of these games getting shitcanned one by one, with maybe the exception of Marathon.
The game came out at the worst time and under the worst conditions. The game was developed without much care from Sony. Any guest they wanted the small studio personally had to ask for, this included Sony's own development studios. Sony would not help them acquire any rights, so convincing big entities to give up characters to a no-name was a daunting task.
Considering the state of Bungie and the leaks around Marathon being absolutely unfun to play that came out at the same time I can see Marathon being canceled as a possibility.
I'm sure it wasn't easy, but really, Big Daddy? I had to look at the list to remember the nobody cast. The Infamous guy? Killzone guy? Dead Space guy? Starhawk guy?! These are deep, deep fucking cuts. I think their logic was popular game = popular character, prioritizing that over actually visually interesting characters.
Take it in context of the time period as we are talking 2012 here. Much of the roster was a solid representation of Sony during the 2-3 era and many choices were made off representing the IPs going at the time.

Consoles will always have relevance because there's a solid chunk of the population that has ZERO desire to ever figure out how a PC works or like you said, they just want to come home after work and chill. They want to buy a new game, put it in, and then hopefully have it ready to play after they've done a few chores around the house, they don't want to sit on a computer for an hour trying to optimize performance for their rig.
Valve is changing that. If Steam Deck 2 is even more popular and streamlined then Sony & Microsoft are in deep shit down the line. Sony moreso as Microsoft is pivoting to services as their primary focus, whereas Sony is stumbling along behind.
God, I wish they had gone with the open-ended good ending of 2 and brought Cole back for more games instead of the weird crap we got instead.
i heard rumors they had plans of making a third game where the bad ending was the canon choice but backed off when they saw the majority of players choose the good ending.
