Honestly I forgot about Sony music because he didn't mention it. They still make revenue but their place in the chain is production more than distribution. Currently its easier to sidestep signing up to record labels and go straight to SoundCloud or other streaming services with your music. Sony is not going to be able to float that division forever.

Sony makes laptops and phones, though I've never seen anyone use either. I know their phones are overpriced with just worse hardware than what you can get from Samsung or Google.

I haven't heard a notable thing about Sony laptops since the VAIO. I only ever hear about MSI and Lenovo these days. They still have phones? I wonder if they just don't sell well in the US market but preform better in other markets. Everything phone wise in the US seems to be Google, IPhone and Samsung. Everything else is a footnote.

Sony's Xperia phones, while generally pricy compared to competitors, do tend to fill a niche. For one, they still maintain the audio jack and have good DACs, and Sony supports unlocking the bootloader and installing custom ROMs.

Yeah I have one of those, and while expensive, it suits my needs pretty perfectly. It also includes an SD card slot, which is important for me. And by "expensive" it's basically competitive with Samsung's flagships.

Now I need to buy a special adapter from MicroCenter so I can bluetooth the audio to my car speakers since my car can only bluetooth calls.

They can't be that great since they've exited so many other markets. Sony doesn't exactly put great leadership at the head of their other divisions. Their primary focus and their best talent goes to PlayStation, behind that is optical sensors for cameras. Their anime division is a literal monopoly that they bought the market dominance of a while back but I guess since its just distribution and localization for America as opposed to creation they aren't technically a monopoly. Who knows. Their movie division has been hit or miss. Their appliance division is gone except for TVs and they aren't even a market leader in that. They are trailing behind Samsung, LG, Vizio, etc. Audio? Bro, everybody uses their phones now with wireless earbuds, who is buying audio equipment in 2024?

If Sony was still a recognizable brand with market share in other industries they might have the capital to do more but they didn't and they don't. Their entertainment is all they have left.

You can appreciate Sony electronics division even if they don't lead the market. Those that lead the market target the normies that are choosing the latest trend/AI/downgrade.

1. Sony Alphas are one of the best professional cameras. I own an Sony RX100M2 for a long time and it is durable, it has 1 inch sensor incorporated in small form factor.

2. I don't know so much about Sony TVs. I agree there are many TVs with better price-quality ratio there like LG. But the Bravias series in the past used to be well color-calibrated. I don't know how today are doing though.

3. They are the only ones that still produce a flagship with 3.5mm port and SD card. They also include better camera sensors. They are expensive indeed, but it doesn't matter IMO that they lead the market or not.

4. They produce good IEMs (Sony IER-Z1R), Digital Audio Players. But they are ultra expensive. They are targetting premium consumers. You can get Chi-fi under 100$ which are very good for their price. I own Truthear Hexa.

I would actually be happier if they would include 2 USB ports.
It is so bad that they only include 1 USB port because:

1. You can't use keyboard/USB storage/cable audio while charging.
2. You are forced to use the shitty decade old MTP protocol (used at first for old phones) if you want to transfer files to PC.
3. Bluetooth sucks for things other than smartwatches and Wireless Audio. Wireless Audio also is janky and its use is best only in certain circumstances like connecting a bicycle speaker or using hands free calling device.

Even if they do that it will have the issue of USB-c cable disconnecting easily when jogging. USB-C design was thought to make disconnection easier as to not damage the port (a good thing if you charge or use the port on PC, bad if you want to listen to audio).

USC-3.5mm adapters are an afterthought to force you to buy wireless. That's why they don't at least include 2 usb-c ports.

So GT7 is finally getting an update after 2 months. Like most of its updates, it's 3 cars and basically 0 content. This month is shittier than normal, as it's 2 VGTs (fake Sony marketing cars with no in game use) and. Suzuki Jimny, which is a tiny SUV with a 0-60 of 15 seconds, and tips over if you look at it funny. It doesn't really have a place in GT, but of course it's Japanese, so people are defending it. I don't know if I'm ready to declare Sony dead quite yet, but it's not looking good at all. Its been a looooong time since the PS5 launched, and PS4 games are still rolling out like it's current. Hi-Fi Rush isn't even getting a bespoke PS5 version. It's coming to PS4. A console that's 11 years old now. That's like the N64 getting a release alongside Assassin's Creed and Portal.

If Sony goes under, I'd be heartbroken. PlayStation established itself with 3D gaming towards general audiences into adults onward. So much history with Sony from their mascot days to movie-quality titles from the PS3. Shame that they have to make arrogant decisions since the PS3.

With VAIO computers not being a thing in stores for the most part, it does go to show how many computer brands have disappeared over the years. Gateway got acquired by ASUS (?), Compaq was acquired by HP, and I don't remember what happened to the likes of Packard Bell and eMachines. Even Daewoo sold computers (I think they may have been re-badges though) at one point, before they went bankrupt.

In addition to people being so used to Smartphone screens, button removal is also used as a cost-cutting tool. Removing buttons is becoming a massive plaque with cars, with the sheer amount of capacitive touch controls, and Infotainment screens being used to control many car functions, i.e. A/C or heater, music, and controls previously used by buttons such as lights, sunroofs, windows, and even changing gears.

Zoomers dont know about renting games or that when you bought it you actually owned it and could swap with friends or about having to sell/trade old games to get a new one because your parents werent going to buy you every game you wanted

I worked for quite some time in marketing, specifically in printing and toning of video footage.

I know this is the Sony Hate thread but I have yet to see better color management on a tv that isn’t a Sony. This already starts at the 500$ range. LG, Samsung especially they somehow make their colors feel weird. Maybe it’s because I am so used to work with color back then that I have yet to see a better out of the box color on a tv. I’ll go back and say it’s not weird what Samsung and LG TVs do, it’s not pleasing to my eyes.
To each their own but Sony still best color in TVs, that is for sure.

I remember in the early 2010s for some reason I really wanted one of those small 3D TVs Sony was selling. I never cared about the 3D crap but I always thought it could’ve made a decent monitor or small tv to just have around.

Level design 101 says you have to design the levels around where you want the player to go. Even when you're making a big level with a lot of points of interest all roads have to lead back to the main path somehow. Dead ends should be short and obvious. Valve developers have had a lot of fun designing levels like that throughout the years.

Cuckmann says every level has to look like a movie set. This means large open areas where the background looks the same as the part of the level you are supposed to interact with. How does he stop the player from going to areas he can't reach? He puts obstacles that look like the obstacles you typically jump over accompanied a big fat invisible wall.

This is beyond shit. How does having no idea where the fuck you're going help your fucking Realoosm Immerzioon Xperience™? Maybe I'm not as much of a moviegoer as Neil Cuckmann, but I have never seen Brad Pitt painfully bump his head on every single edge or corner of the room he's in while trying to look for a way out. The only thing the devs care about and the only thing the journos who play the slop care about is pretty graphics.

Doesn't change the depressing point of the video. A lot of the stuff I would love to see come back would probably sell peanuts when the current expectation in the market is multiple millions. And the big boy studios with the rights to the cool shit are always laser focused on the next big whale instead of trying to revive an older license on a smaller budget.

FIFA still sells by the bucket loads while still looled at with disgust by "gamers", but the dirty truth is all the companies want their FIFA. Same deal with Fortnite, though hopefully all of those failed open service games have them rethinking strategies and remembering that A and AA exist and are great niches for another MegaMan, Einhander or Parappa.

But then MegaMan is cursed by the shadow of Inafune, Square is terrified of doing anything that isn't an rpg and Sony only wants AAA movie games, so Parappa is dead and buried.

Best we can hope for is spiritual succesors from the original talent or devoted new bloods that can actually tap to the soul of things.
