Nitpicking about blockiness proves his point, it's fine overall. 5th gen graphics could look good enough. I never played Fear Effect, but the graphics almost look too good to be 5th gen, kinda looks like Dreamcast. It just isn't true no 3D games looked good.

Maybe on average it's true they didn't look good. There were plenty of cases that looked like this:

But then there were ones that looked like this:

Doesn't look bad, the generation was just a mixed bag.
I actually enjoy 5th gen graphics. Even jaggies didn’t bother me back then. Here are a few additional games that have aged better than most.

The Crash Bandicoot and Spyro games have a similar approach. I defy anyone to claim these are not visually-appealing levels.

These stages and their backgrounds are perfect examples of "doing more with less". These scenes have the power to make you feel like you're actually in a fantasy adventure with the character you play as.

The colors complement each other and the sky sets the tone and atmosphere. Outside of 2d 16-bit pixel art, these games are the best example I immediately go to if someone were to ask me what I would consider perfect/beautiful art.

You can tell the developers actually wanted to make something... the passion is all in there.

The power of UE5!
the good part in this is that you can use your 2025 gpu to generate fake frames and enjoy a higher frame count than the consoles, isn't that nice? pc is finally free of having subpar games given to them because of the filthy console peasants thanks to frame generation, a marvel of technology!

Are we going to sperg about new tech being bad now?
UE5 is a garbage engine. Resolution upscaling isn't necessarily  bad per se, 720 upscaled to 1080 or 1440 (I know they usually upscale from weird meme resolutions, but that's not really the point) will generally look better than raw 720p, but won't look nearly as good as native 1080p or 1440p, and the technology incentivizes them to not even try. As for fake frames, they are an absolute cancer that manages to be even  worse than an unstable framerate that constantly drops into the low teens.

I wouldn’t call it a bad engine, but bad for open world games.

No, RE Engine is a fine engine that's bad for open world games. UE5 is at best, a crutch that does a lot of work (poorly) for the devs automatically. In practice, it's a bloated, stuttering mess that enables laziness and mass outsourcing to India at an unprecedented scale.

Those look great too. Aside from some of the worst graphics such as Granstream Saga and Guardian's Crusade I actually like 5th gen visually. Any generation can have games with shitty graphics anyway, but the best looking games still look fine.

It's all about working within the confines of the technology at the time and the competence of the art style. Some games nowadays look like fucking arse and some Og Xbox and Dreamcast games still look great. Memba Jet Set radio?

Or the best racing game ever made, Wacky races:

This games is 25 years old. 25 years before this game we had space invaders (1978). Have we seen that level of improvement in the 25 years since PS2/DC/Gamecube/Xbox? Does Halo 1 look like space invaders compared to Halo Infinite?

I agree, I think something about the limitations of the hardware and higher difficulty of development brought out the best results. We still see technically impressive stuff but it's devoid of any artistry, like Intergalactic.

Thinking of it that way, Metroid Prime came out 24 years after Space Invaders. Unfathomable leap there. Prime still looks great, easily one of the best looking 6th gen games.

I think this is where it all went wrong. We gave devs no limitations and allowed them to dictate what they wanted in consoles (moar ram) without explaining why they needed it. This gen going SSD is great for removal of load times, but has allowed bloat to happen on an unprecedented scale. No longer to devs have to think about how information loads, in which order, how much of it loads and how to hide the load screens.

Devs have gotten lazier, games have gotten uglier and bloat is unprecedented.

As @Markorian alluded to, all the latest fancy tech available in Unreal 5 and the $2000 GPU running it can't hide the fact that Suhkdeep Studios used the default settings on everything because that's what the documentation suggested.

Cheap and generic still looks cheap and generic even at 4k.

Thinking about it you’re right. Lumen is retarded, it takes the processing power of hardware Ray tracing without the visual effects.

And that's not even factoring in the corporate greed and Wokeism. No wonder gaming's in the shitter.

A 4k turd is still a turd, I suppose.
