I'm super salty to discover the PS3 can't handle harddrives larger than 1TB. There goes my plans for a 2TB SSD.
It sounds unbelievable but the PS3 Developer Wiki says the filesystem will slowly degrade over time until its unusable.
Damn it Sony.
I somehow thought this was common knowledge.

360's really nice to support up to 2tb usb drives.

I see the Sony fans melting down but none are asking how a game made in 2025 for the PS5 will run on Switch 2, which is supposed to be a souped-up PS4.
Same way the Atelier games shifted to having Switch as the target platform after years on PS4, if the business demands a release on a lower end platform they will find a way.

this just looks like alpha graphics they hadnt ironed out yet and wouldve fixed later on (makes sense, the game is in fucking alpha)
lolwut? What do you mean "alpha graphics"? The tech they're working with has been stabilized and refined for 45 god damn years at this point. What's to "iron out"?

My astonishment at their utter incompetence knows no bounds. HOW DO YOU EVEN MANAGE TO DO THAT?!?! Stable, reliable 64-bit exabyte-capable filesystems with practically corruption-proof design and operation have been available -- open-sourced and MIT-licensed -- for three fucking decades! Christ, even BSD's UFS2 is perfectly adequate for this job. THEY USE BSD UNDER THE HOOD ANYWAY!

I feel like I'm channeling AVGN: "What were they thinking?!?!"

God forbid that Sony wasnt enough forward thinking to allow 2tb ssd. So someone in 2025 could install pirated games, lol..

No, it's not even that. It's not that they didn't think to "allow" a 2TB hard disk in the system. It's that they apparently designed and implemented a custom filesystem and related utilities but did such a horrible job that it literally pretends to work properly on disks larger than 1 terabyte but then also silently and irrevocably fails over time as they're used. What's worse is that this does not appear to have been deliberate "sabotage" but rather sheer incompetence, especially in the presence of existing software that was 1) free, 2) available for commercial purposes without charge or licensing burdens, 3) demonstrably functional and better.

Now I know why my PS3 used to crash during updates. It was shitting its pants trying to seem like it was functioning. I also played Bethesda games alot, so that could be the other reason.

Think the PS4 has the same issue with its file system.

I swear to god there must be, like, 10 assholes on this earth who specialize in developing dogshit filesystems and they just make the rounds between Microsoft (FAT, NTFS) and random electronics companies (bespoke custom garbage) shitting out bad code, getting drunk, and cashing the checks before the overworked intern gets around to testing fsck and discovers it eats half the files on the disk once the volume exceeds N gigabytes in size.

They had a bug that didn't need to be addressed unless they sold a 2TB PS3, which was never even close to a commercially viable option. I'm sure while they still had resources to address this issue there were always more pressing problems to fix.

Could have been as simple as using a 32-bit int somewhere it shouldn't have been used, maybe even a quick fix if it mattered.

Stuff I work on has all kinds of similar tech debt, but hey if it's been accepted by customers for 10+ years then we aren't going to fix it until it becomes pressing.

They introduced a bug unnecessarily by developing (unnecessarily) a filesystem and toolchain for it in the presence of superior alternatives that were readily available. Not-invented-here syndrome in full force. Especially stupid because they were already using BSD's core anyway. There's a god damn filesystem right there, for free, MIT-licensed. No fees, credits, or source code disclosures required. Just fucking use it, morons! You're already using the kernel it was built for anyway.

I'm familiar with the notion of technical debt, I'm just pointing out it's silly to incur any intentionally.

To be fair - FAT was actually an elegant solution designed to give you an actual filesystem on devices that were tiny for the time. FAT can be much faster to traverse than the full tree filesystems that were common on Unix and other high-end workstations of the era, specifically when you're dealing with smaller storage devices with low numbers of files.

NTFS, despite it only showing up for consumers in like 2001 with XP, was actually introduced all the way back in 1993 when journaling file systems were still rare and exotic.

The bigger issue is that MS hasn't really moved on from NTFS rather than NTFS itself being spectacularly bad for the era it was developed in. ReFS was supposed to do that but Microsoft has given up on actually fixing the internals of NT so that's just been left to rot.

Sony latest corporate report is all about DEI, they should never have expanded to the west.

The full report:

They've combined 'line must go up' with diversity bullshit. You don't hate Sony enough.
You don't need to, they can't stay afloat like this for long. Sooner or later it's going to start effecting their profits and those diversity hires will be the first to go. They can celebrate hitting an iceberg all they want, it won't stop the ship from sinking. I wish them a very happy loss of profits, same as with crapcom and every other DEI obsessed Japanese company, of which I should add that DEI is extremely unpopular in Japan and so are companies trying to appeal to westerners above their home market.

Any sony ponies want to recommend me some good crossplay titles? I've been trying to keep in touch with my normie co-workers after work and helldivers 2 has been a blast but I need more variety.

I definitely will grab BF6 at some point if it isn't too dogshit.

Gears of War reloaded's PC port and networking is apparently shit, but it's alright

I sometimes wish we lived in an alternative timeline where Microsoft didn't burn Valve so all their ps3/xbox gen titles could get QOL updates as well as crossplay and Bethesda console tier mod support at the least.

Hoefully, Microshaft fully cucks to Sony and updates the Halo: MCC to be crossplay to PS5 as well.

"Diverse Individual Experiences" sounds like a way to technically, perhaps for legal reasons or something, move ever-so-slightly from the "Diversity, Equity & Inclusion". Absolute liberal snakes.

DEI is extremely unpopular in Japan
Sounds like the previous cope, "Japan will never bend the knee!" but toned down to "Well, they bent the knee, but they don't like it!" How long until we realize these companies DO like it, even in Japan?

Crossplay was one of the biggest nails in the gaming industries coffin.
Why's that? It frees a lot of people from the Sony ecosystem and is great for gamers generally.

Crossplay is dogshit because in the past, building/buying/saving up for a PC provided an IQ barrier and impulse control requirements so you wouldn't get paired with drooling console retards.

I've been teamkilled/killed on helldivers 2 more times with crossplay on due to people carelessly using mortar sentries, throwing minefields on top of objecives/the team, not bringing anti-tank equipment, and so on.

Same thing with the Battlefield 6 Open Beta with how many steam rolls I saw that shouldn't have happened.

That said, I like hanging out with my co-workers even if it's online.

@NeonFlux answered it well above but I'll chuck my thoughts in.

A console should be a walled experience. It isn't good for gamers or hobbiest gamers, it's only good for little johnny and his normie friends.

Opening up closed ecosystems leads us to the slopfest that we see today.
And as Neon also says, Crossplay between PC and console is fucking retarded. Apex legends did it and allowed PC players to use M+KB while consoles gamers use controllers.

The best sentence to sum up everything wrong with crossplay is this: "But you can use KB+M on console!".
