I fucking love the ps2, and it has a massive catalogue and a wide one too, but what it tends to lack for me are games I constantly return to. There are a bunch of games I enjoyed the hell out of, and I'm glad I played, but not many that give me that itch to return to them. Metal Gear Solid 3 (specifically the subsistence version) is one of the few examples I can think of. I've played far more ps2 games than gamecube games in my life, but in the past year alone, I've probably revisited at least 10 gamecube games (specifically on dolphin, not nso), and maybe 2 or 3 ps2 games in the last 3 years.
I don't usually replay through too many games (years after the fact at least, I'm a trophy/chievo sperg so I'll do different difficulties and so on.) so I have no strong feelings on that (other than co-op games, but that's another matter entirely). Though by that metric I'm sure the PS2 rapes the Switch, inasmuch as I decently liked many of the Switch games the only one I would/have ever revisited is mario kart 8.

Ghost of Yotei is Beating Tsushima in Sales, Sony Reveals WTF!.. who buys the woke garbage Lesbians of Yotei??.. its time for the tar and feather treatment.

“exceeded the sales of the previous title in the same period of time.”
Sony’s CFO has revealed that Ghost of Yotei’s sales have performed better than those of Tsushima in the same period.
If that same period is launch, then it means nothing. GoT was a new IP. GoY was established and launched during a drought.

Chances are the sales are terrible and sony is trying to put positive spin on that fact.

GoT launched in July. GoY launched in October. They're literally comparing GoT's launch to GoY's launch AND holiday season. Lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Most of the PS2 games I liked were either multiplatform, or rhythm games that have long since become obsolete. I haven't played a PS2 in years. I don't even bother emulating it, because PS2 versions of multiplatform games tended to look the worst, and had the worst loading times. PS2 never got enough crap for its long loading times, and also how long it would take to save to its memory card.

I still wound up with a sizeable collection, though, because it was the king whether you liked it or not. Even though Gamecube was the best-designed console all around, and Xbox had that nice hard drive and a bunch of PC ports. PS2 was a janky piece of shit I had to tolerate because a lot of games were exclusive at the time, or released there first.

Sounds similar to what I had. Outside of DDR, the rest of the collection I had were...
  • Fighters: SFEX3, SFAnthology, and the entire Tekken series were the only PS2 exclusive games. Everything else were multiplats (e.g. MVC2, CVS2)
  • Platformers: Anything Sonic related were always multiplats. I-Ninja was a multiplat. The Crash Bandicoot games became multiplat once they left the PS1 era. Megaman Anniversary Collection speaks for itself. I had a Asterix and Obelix game that also has a PC version under a different name. The Sly Cooper and Jack'n'Daxter games are the only ones I can think of that were PS2 exclusive.
  • Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 were PS2 exclusive
  • Puzzles: Tetris Worlds and Super Bust-A-Move was on fucking everything. The latter had a PS2 only sequel.

It has always been 160 million. Sony kept selling PS2s until 2013 and the 155 million number was reported in 2012
So they decided not to correct their “error” until over a decade later, right after another console was projected to pass the original amount, to a clean round number that’s just barely above the new console’s projections? What a lucky coincidence! I can’t wait for two years from now when the Switch leaves the market and Sony suddenly reports a bug that the true-definite-final-number they printed on that final PS2 was off by a million and they didn’t notice until just now.

Ps2's dominance definitely gets mythologized a bit. Don't get me wrong, it was an absolute HOUSE, but by the time the ps3 actually launched, the ps2 was lagging behind the ps1 (though, regionally, it had made significant gains in the US) and somewhere around 97 million sales. It also was uncommon, but not unheard of, for the gamecube version of a multiplat to outsell the ps2 version. It got a bit of a long tail due to the ps3 famously shitting the bed, but the majority of those remaining sales were made in 3rd world countries that were just adopting dvd as a format for the first time, and the ps2 was the cheapest dvd player on the market, and software attach ratio plummeted after that point.

I think realistically, the actual sales of the ps2 are somewhere between 147 million and 150 million. Sony hadn't really updated the ps2 sales for a few years, but all of the sudden, dropped multiple years at once as soon as the ds was creeping closer to the ps2's at the time total of 145 million. Sales were averaging ~1.2 million per year according to those figures, and pretty steadily dropping year over year. Suddenly, a year later, sony drops the infamous 155 million number. According to them, the ps2 had gone from selling 1.2 million a year in the twilight years of its own successor to selling over 5 million in a single year. This totally had absolutely nothing to do with the ds barreling past previous estimates in the wake of the rough launch of the 3ds. And then in 2024, sony "updates" the number, and rather than doing the sensible thing of saying "The ps2 sold an additional 5 million in the decade since we previously updated the figure", they unironically go with "Actually, we miscounted, it really sold TEN million that year!"

Mark my words, I think they did this in such a way so that if the switch 1 looks like it will pass 160 million, they have room to say "Oh, the ps2? The total is actually 165 million, there were some regions still selling it as late as 2017, like India!"

If the sales were meeting expectations, or exceeding them, they wouldn't be shy about letting us know.

Any time they engage in corporate doublespeak and number massaging you can tell a product is not doing well and they're trying to hide the fact from shareholders.

Another more recent thing I should mention, is that ever since the ps portal got the update for cloud streaming, elevating it from the world's worst wiiu tablet knockoff to a knockoff ouya, many sources have started including every ps portal sale as a ps5 sale, their "reasoning" being that if the switch lite counts as a switch sale, the ps portal should count as a ps5 sale. I don't think I've seen sony admitting to doing this with their own numbers, but would it surprise me? Not in the slightest. I know that they double count refurbished ps5s on their numbers, counting the initial sale of the console AND the refurbished sale, and they've admitted to that.

Your new PS5 game saar

Wasn't this one of the ones that Sony explicitly said they cancelled?!?

After looking at the PAL-Khazar version of the PS2, I'm quite sure the PS2 sold 600 million, and it would be very problematic for you to continue suggesting otherwise.
