Which is a brilliant idea! Have it be at double or even triple the price of the competition. It is not like the Switch 2 will not look better in comparison, even when it is very controversial. It is still strong enough to port modern games into. Also, the Steam Deck is a thing too. And let's not forget whatever else Valve has in store with the Steam Machine. For about the same price as a "modern" console, you get a proper PC. Sony and MS are determined to have this be their last console generation.

A poster earlier in the thread said that it seems we're going to a renting model, where you rent hardware for $50/ a month or whatever, like a Stadia.
It seems that poster (credit to you, whoever said it) was correct.

Do not be so sure. The audience will not notice a fall in product quality if it is A-to-B but they will notice it if it is A-to-J. Goes double if the price is high enough. You cannot rely on everyone being an idiot (unless you are Apple).

Ironically Apple’s newest stuff ain’t so bad these days (ridiculously overpriced monitors, wheels, etc. aside) the switch from x86 to ARM makes their laptop battery life good and the newest 500$ laptop with the mobile CPU is pretty good for a “Chromebook” (surprisingly repairable too). Given how dogshit Windows is nowadays I know of some who have made the switch (Granted that Linux is still the best choice if you’re willing to put in the elbow grease).

If it’s getting the console as before then yeah ur right, though Sony could presumably shutoff online access and even brick the console like Nintendo did with some S|2’s apparently. If Sony moves the processing to the “cloud” it becomes even easier to enforce payment. At that point I’d expect them to use credit cards or some Klarna-like payment system that lets them debtmax harder.

Yeah, you're probally right there. I don't think a console renter would be smart enough to know how to bypass the restrictions.

It doesn't change the fact that they coasted of their name for far too long. Also, being better than current MS is hardly an accomplishment. They still overprice shit.

The console bricking is nothing new. Though from what I heard, rumors regarding it were exaggerated.

I doubt anyone trusts Kotaku anymore, especially after it became obvious that they have an anti-Nintendo stance over being blacklisted for their pro-piracy stance.

There's a difference between believing a game journalist when they talk about something they don't know about, and when a game journalist tells them everything they want to hear and already believe.

It’s analogous to how people use review scores/GOTY awards to bolster their favorite company but whenever they disagree they pivot back to saying the reviewers are biased and/or shills.

Honestly, I still play mine even though I have a PC. Mostly because I'm super paranoid about wear and tear on my PC stuff. I don't want to just play games on it 24/7 and wake up one day having my GPU die on me and then realize too late I was priced out of the hobby practically overnight. The paranoia is real, fellas.
