To politisperg a bit, I disagree with this notion. People have always been able to connect with other weirdos and mentally ill people in the world. The entire French Revolution was started from spergs in cafe's talking about how "le bad" society was (which in turn lead to one of the most horrific, bloodiest, pointless mass killing in human history). The only difference is that distance is no longer as much of a problem and instead of early communists/progressives being the ones doing the killings, its atomized and isolated losers.

The problem is our society is a factory for mental illness. We created circumstances that are so unforgiving, hostile, and mean to certain demographics of people that they feel they have no choice but to snap. The insanity of isolation, lack of understanding from others, and rabble of other people's misery told to you online is bound to create problems.

The internet itself is merely a vehicle for message and is not in itself the cause of any singular problem. It's merely a vehicle for sending messages and communications between people, the issue lies with the people themselves, who then turn to the internet to hear things. Society has no solution for socially off putting people currently, they rather sweep them under the rug, label them with insults and slurs, and soft ban them from getting ahead in the world. Until that changes, these people are going to be isolated, hostile, and prone to violence.

As usual, unhappy people with nothing to lose are prone to violence. People are going to blame everything but the things that cause unhappiness for the problem, screaming its "MUH INTERNET" or "MUH GUNS" endlessly to scapegoat the tools used in that process rather than its cause. If you want to know why humans are killing people, look at the humans themselves.
