It's supposed to be a macho thing, like the smashed and slammed toadline bullies. It's normal for male cichlids in the wild to develop a lumpy forehead once they enter breeding season. And so the Asian market sees that, and mutilating animals to compensate for their tiny penises is a billion-dollar industry over there, and they decide to breed the most dysgenic Megamind-ass genetic abominations that they can possibly muster, inject them with flourescent dye, and then they sell these fucking things for 3,000 yuan apiece to the next greater fool who can be convinced it's good for feng shui chi or however the rice is fried.

I used to keep flowerhorns, I'm pretty sure the big bulbs are called koks? I knew most of the stuff you just said, aquariums are a hobby of mine, but I did not know those colours were artificial, I thought it was like a pitbull thing where you selectively breed them for those traits. fluorescent dye??

Flowerhorns are also so fragile its awful, they die to the smallest things, I remember seeing a horror-story on reddit accompanied with a picture of a dead flowerhorn which basically said that construction workers were making a ton of noise outside and the flowerhorn got stressed and died.

Far too expensive, far too fragile.

Some of them are dyed. Not all, thank Christ. It's more of a thing in the SEA market, where the "best-looking" contest winners can be worth tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. There, they'll even go as far as injecting them with hormones to bloatmaxx their "koks" (the bulbs are called that, but I think that term is specifically just for flowerhorns). But yeah, it is a selective breeding thing for the most part. Exact same mindset as the toadline niggas.

Null's explained before that, because feature messages at the top of the site likely incur legal liability for him (and that featuring threads usually results in the threads being inundated with low-quality posts that make the thread unusable for half a week), mods with the same ability to feature threads as Null are usually slow to do so, so featured threads naturally tend to reflect what Null is aware of or involved in following.
