The, "what if the protagonists are actually the bad guys" twist is a trope that has become incredibly pretentious and in the case of franchises like 40K, instead of being used to actually explore any sort of moral conflict it's used by the most obnoxious cretins to scold people for the crime of enjoying "problematic dark fiction", or being a fan of it in the "incorrect" way with a distinct lack of their precious "media literacy". Like the people who claim that 40K is or should be a deconstruction of all of the "chuds" in the audience. while constantly demanding radical changes be made to something the claim to be fans of.
