And that's where the community comes in to kill them. Any Byond griefer has like 10 backup accounts and the ability to just swap between them on the fly, we've had these people before and most of the time the players just kill them when they get attacked, or when they do something obviously stupid.

Our game is obtuse and very different from Ss13, grief that works in the base game simply does not work on our server. Similar to Fallout, You cannot plasmaflood. As well as this, you cannot make bombs, and to get weapons that will deal enough damage to kill someone you will need game knowledge which you need to ask about or complete a lengthy tutorial to actually know. Chemistry is a system written from scratch. Griefers have none of their usual tools.

Griefers are sorted by the community in 95% of cases before they do any harm because it's obvious. They see a gun in their pocket, they shoot a nearby player dealing almost no damage, and that player cracks their skull open in like 3 hits.

Passwords are on the way next week. I just wanted to punch out a quick fix to let a couple people try our game. We actually have been running this for a few days and have had no issues so far. I've got the staff monitoring things for griefers and we have enough admins and maintainers who can close the guest access, Shutting off this system temporarily or permanently

Yeah, this is the first step in like a 7 step process to getting us Hub-Free. Next week I'm working out a password system; and setting up interviews for all people logging in this way.

Truth be told, I rushed out a system to let people save their preferences so that a few people on our discord can actually play the game without checking the byond website every 10 minutes.

I'll have to actually see it fail before I pass judgement tbh. Having to cycle IPs is not that much less of a deterrent than having to cycle IPs and accounts. That is, it will stop casual / low effort griefers and not do much at all to dedicated griefers ready to bypass it.

You're assuming that the dedicated griffers or trolls like Rshoe/Wsock won't just try to use exploits to repeatedly crash/ddos the game, or RCE into the game (Hello SQL table).

If they're a small server that's not hub listed, they're actually in general mostly safe from this stuff. Unless the Eye of Sauron specifically falls upon them vis a vis a sharty thread or something, they'll be free to just play their own game with their own small population. Dedicated griefers and trolls will attack servers whether byond authentication is on or not, because the tools they use have already long since bypassed byond's safety measures. Hacked clients, etc. But if you're unlisted and you're just playing with your own community, there's no reason for them to come find you.

He's right though. I don't recognize the username but he's 100% correct about Fallout 13. Except the part about maps, the community was always hungry for new GOOD maps. But yeah if you changed anything about it significantly the autists would scream and literally demand you put it back or they and their clique were perma-quitting. It was all retard bullshit too where everybody wanted to be the leader but nobody wanted to lead. A FO13 project is also the first place I've been full-throat screamed at by a "higher up" for "being lazy" aka not being on 24/7 to take tickets as an unpaid janny.

The problem with "removing ERP" was also that every single server that tried to do this was run by no-fun-haver retards, who either wanted full control and bannu everything they didn't like (weird colored hair? bannu), OR who wanted full Legion vs NCR TDM with 0 roleplay. Neither of those things were what most players wanted, sexhaver or not.

And that's not to mention that Fallout is a series that just, has sex and drugs in it, by nature. Removing the Jet-addicted prostitutes is sort of like removing the broken cars everywhere; it takes some of the realness of the setting away. I actually believed then and still believe now that most people who wanted to play FO13 did not actually like Fallout as a series and an IP; that is, they did not play the isometric games and only liked 3 or New Vegas as a single standalone title.
