In the hypothetical case that Batman "won" and Gotham was cleaned, it's 50/50 if he would give up the cowl. Chances are he would expand his territory to the entire world and beyond, as B&B Bats cartoon showed. I think he would retire only if he got too old, or his love interest got pregnant and no melodrama happened, which is impossible, and even then, he would be tempted to don the cowl at any moment.
I think Batman being a member of the JLA/JLI proves he already considered the whole world his jurisdiction.
He won't quit till he's dead.

I like how Kingdom Come had him use technology to keep going beyond what his body would allow, and to police the streets of his city after even that wasn't viable.

He doesn't stop. Beyond was great.

Superman Unlimited #11 came out last Friday so I guess it's time for it's time for a Jon Kent sperg-out, well perhaps a a short one. The issue was all right, but the art from Lucas Meyer is what really sells it. It's basically a TL;DR of his history narrated by Jonny-boy's (future) arch-nemesis, Master Txyz and then gets meta when he basically uses every real world criticism (notably Jon's redundancy and lack of standout stories) to prove that nothing he did as Superman mattered. Jon's response is "Screw history!" and switches his mantle to the Tomorrow Man, and Txyz relents when he realizes that he created a predestination paradox and, as a "gift", opens and portal and Teen Jon rescues his preteen self.

It appears that DC may be backtracking on the age-up decision, somewhat, by having the two versions coexist simultaneously for the time being. However, the wary part of me is waiting for them to pull the rug out. Teen Jon is still part of the New Titans as "Superman" so they may still be somewhat invested in the direction they've been pushing since Future State, but a drastic roster change is also the troubling sign if we look at Justice League Detroit in the 80s and Arsenal's New Titans/Jurgens' Teen Titans in the 90s. The future is fluid at this point.

Can I just take a moment to gush about this whole sequence? He goes from begging at his parents' graves about how he needs it to be different because he legitimately never imagined that he would be happy again. We get this scene of him staring at the cowl, realizing what he's about to do to his life as the music starts to clue us in too. And the best part is Alfred. They fucking nailed the transition as his face goes from disinterested, not-quite-bemused "My rich retard surrogate son is going to spend a week pretending to be Zorro and then give it up to take up extreme snowboarding or some shit" to the realization that he is watching a man commit the slowest suicide in history starting with his own ego.

The best part is this comes after Andrea was forced to leave with her father due to mob interference.

Bruce had just proposed to her and she happily accepted. Then he gets a letter from her telling him she left and to forget about her.

Knowing that ray of hope (Andrea) he latched onto when he was grieving at his parents' grave was snatched away in an instant makes his decision all the more understandable.

He'll never be free until his city is. And his city will never be free.

Ideally, this would be where Bruce is forced to grow as a character by those around him and realize he can find happiness while still protecting people as Batman. But alas, the status quo must be maintained.

Kingdom Come being mentioned reminds me, as an aside, a tangent, of a conversation overheard at a comic shop - Kingdom Come was being pontificated on by the assistant manager behind the counter who said in the most Comic Shop Guy way possible that he couldn't recommend the book because "I thought for sure that at the end, every hero caught by that bomb were going to be turned into mutants. All of them hit with the blast should have become mutants. That would have been a good story!"

The Superman/Spiderman crossover is a pretty fun read, more fun than a lot of recent books from the Two. There's a backup written by Gail Simone, which I didn't mind too much. The story has Power Girl out on a blind date with a guy who turns out to be Paul, at what turns out to be a bar full of villains, with a gentleman called Frank working the door as a bouncer and it's interesting to see more undiluted anti-Paul sentiment. So many regrettable characters have been introduced in Marvel over the past decade or so and plenty of them just get tossed on the junk pile never to be seen again but Paul has so far stuck around. Its just funny to see in real time him moving into Spider-Man then Venom then into the DCU. He breaches containment constantly, where will he slither into next?

Fuck Paul.
And fuck the trend of hooking Karen up with brown people.
Frank ❤️ Karen forever at this point.

I saw someone jokingly suggest a crossover featuring Paul encountering the closest to a DC counterpart of his, Diana Troy's loser husband Terry Long, or rather heroes from both companies would have to prevent them from meeting because it turns out they're both living embodiments of halves of the Anti-Life Equation.

I do enjoy going through bargain bins and seeing comics from the 80s and 90s where the cover has something like "Limited Edition of [3 times the average distribution numbers of today's comics]!" It's also funny to know that some of the series I've seen in bargain bins, and in some situations bought for a pittance had early issues going for $20-$30 back in the 1980s because they were so sought after at the time. I've seen indie comics from that era that have editorial sections asking people to be patient about distribution because back-issues of their series were in-demand and incredibly scarce.
