Yeah, I've actually been pondering the exact same thing and got to a similar conclusion
I think most comics fans don't want to accept this, but truth is that this already happens anyway. Even if they claim to be the "same continuity", comics today aren't the same as they were in the 90's or in the 80's or the 70s and so on.
It's just impossible to retain the same continuity and keep people interested forever
Maybe not exactly "10 years". But I think comics have to embrace it's own mortality eventually. No story can go forever without changing be it intentionally or unintentionally,

Can't believe DC made it convoluted for people not to see Jerome be the Joker in Gotham because DC wanted to avoid any confusions between him and Jared Leto's Joker. The actor who played Jerome absolutely killed it with his performance.

Dark Knight Returns and Strikes Again are a separate continuity from the main one, so in that sense they are non-canon. If you mean non-canon from DKR, yeah that's probably for the best.
Anyway, I'm just ready for Marvel and DC to die now and something fresh to replace them, but sadly I know that probably won't happen in my lifetime.

I think long running continuity is fine. Marvel did well with it for the first 40ish years. It wasn't until about the mid '90s when they started fucking up with crap like the Clone Saga, Heroes Reborn, Fall From Grace, and the like -- and incidentally all those were attempts at 'rebooting' characters. It wasn't even that continuity had become unwieldy at that point, but rather Marvel just made a lot of stupid decisions and had a lot of shitty talent running their books at the time. I'll concede that continuity probably can't continue on forever but ten years is definitely too little time. With that we'd probably just constantly get shit like Ultimate Marvel line with Peter Parker forever in high school or constant retreads of setting up the conflict between the X-Men and Magneto and the creation of the Sentinels.
DC constantly tries to reboot their line but always messes it up. They never really plan ahead and they always wuss out, never truly and completely resetting everything. Batman, for example, always gets a pass, which causes a domino effect. They consistently end up needing something like Zero Hour or Rebirth to try to walk back or fix the mess of their last reboot attempt. I wouldn't expect constant reboots to be any different -- we'd probably still have writers trying to sneak in references to past stuff they like or the publisher deciding a title is selling too well to reboot with the rest of the line (which I think is what happened with Green Lantern during Flashpoint).
As for Didio, good. I'm glad he's gone. From what I remember, he's the reason why newer versions of characters like Cassie Cain or Stephanie Brown as Batgirl or Wally West as Flash got screwed over, wanting instead for them to revert back to his preferred versions from when he was growing up.
EDIT: The dick sucking of Didio by Bleeding Cool is so blatant and hilarious.

This, continuity is hard to follow at DC right now because of all reboot non-sense, which is why I am sure he was ousted, Also I am just going to throw this out there, fixing continuity does not need a "Crisis" or cosmic reset which are used all too cynically to try to bilk people with new relaunches but rather just good editors and coherent direction for the company.

Apparently he has a habit of doing things "my way or the highway" which rubs other creators and employees raw.
5G in particular has caused a schism at DC with guys like Scott Synder being violently opposed and saying it will fuck over the retailers.

Going off my experience meeting Scott Snyder irl, I would have assumed he was a good guy. I’m glad to see he’s still a good guy behind the scenes.

Dunno if the rumours are just advertising based on fear, or actually true, but supposedly Van Sciver said AT&T are considering closing down the publishing arm of DC Comics (that is, the entire comic book line) if 5G fails:

Which would suck, since I think 5G will almost certainly fail. Even if DC doesn't totally fuck over their universe like Marvel did with Marvel NOW!, people still like Kal-El and Bruce Wayne and probably don't want to read about Johnny Everyguy filling in their shoes.
Here's to waiting and seeing if they replace 90% of their main cast with women, PoCs, LGBTs and whatever else they can think of to piss off their fanbase.

Looking it up, I think I’m gonna give it a read. I don’t think our local has it, but the used shop in town is good for ordering. I really enjoyed Preacher myself, thought the art was good and the dialogue had a better rhythm to it than most. Were you a fan of Constantine (hell movie or comic version, I thought both were good and “felt” the same)?

Stray Bullets was a great series IMHO. I remember hunting down single issues for a couple customers back in the day. It got pretty hot at its peak.
I would highly endorse picking up Preacher and also agree with @YoungHustle about Hellblazer. That's a must-read series if you dig the flavor of Preacher.

I always thought the comic version of Constantine was better than the movie version.
Then again, I read it years ago, so I probably don’t remember much of it.

There was a TV show that ran for one season about 5 years ago that was very faithful to the comics version. Even after the show got canned, the character and his story carried over to Legends of Tomorrow, where he is the team's resident magic caster. They also let him smoke and fuck both dudes and chicks as God intended.
