He's clearly got some Caucasian in him but Asian.
Looking up the actor that played Shun (Justin Tomimori), he's apparently half-Japanese half-Australian. Found some video of him speaking English but it's very rough, still better than a lot of Japanese, but it might not be enough for any major English role.
 
I am looking for some good Gambit comics. Are any of his solo series good?
None of them are great, but none of them are terrible.

The best ones are the first two volumes (collected as "Gambit Classic", I believe). I think they're 4 issues each.

The later ones are dumber in the way a lot of more modern comics are, but they're still pretty fun so it's not too bad.

Gambit's never had like outright "good" comics but his shit's always been just dumb fun and add more to worldbuilding, especially considering that he's still considered to be one of the classic x men and had a really convoluted number of "intended" twists that never really game true and a very heavy attempt at making him a solo X-Man character like Wolverine. This doesn't really work well these days tbh.
 
Someone at DC must be a Mariko fan, she's going to be the next writer on Detective Comics after their Future State run. Wonder if we'll get a chubby goth Damian out of it. I couldn't find (though admittedly didn't really look) any details on what she has planned. Given her track record, I think the best case scenario is we end up with something so bad it's worth pirating for a laugh.
 
What is it with DC giving mediocre writers a ridiculous amount of material and power?
Tom King’s Vision and Mister Miracle were good, but handing him Rorschach, Adam Strange, AND BATMAN?
Bendis was ok writing Daredevil and Spider-Man, so now he gets an entire comic line including Young Justice as well as SUPERMAN?
And Mariko Tamaki is also fine, but Wonder Woman AND Detective Comics?

I don’t like Ethan Van Schiver, but I think he might’ve been onto something when he said that AT&T is trying to kill DC.

I'm 100% expecting her to add a chubby goth love interest to one of the male leads as a way to put a self-insert in it.

Tom King was decent but I think they really went nuts over his decent Vision run and expect him to be amazing when he's just good.

Bendis is Bendis. I kinda wish he'd just make his own version of a JLI type thing filled with B and C list characters for fun.

I'm not aware of any actual examples but I can imagine it might be frustrating, especially if they believe the new writer doesn't "get" the characters. Might range from slight annoyance to anger depending on how attached the previous creative team was and how badly they perceive the new one to be messing up. Hell, they might even feel a bit insulted that all the work they put into building up something interesting was immediately tossed to the side by the next guy.

I think characterization and continuity has been one of the biggest headaches getting into comics, one writers run can make me love a character and then the next person in the driver seat seems to take away what I liked in the first place. Concepts I enjoy one run are then thrown out or drastically changed in the next. You'll sometimes get that perfect feeling run where it's like the author has created the characterization/story and everything else past or present just pale in comparison. For example, as much as I enjoyed the newer Animal Man series I found the Morrison's run Animal Man is the one I think about if the character gets brought up and its story stands out far more to me. It's something I haven't really run into over my years of manga reading since it's usually a single author or collaborations vision and even spin-offs or adaptions will typically get the author in to consult them about characters.

It's interesting, but also annoying if the writers I'm enjoying switch mid "run" and I find myself not really enjoying the changes that typically come with a new combo.
 
Quick rundown of my issues with Ultimate Spider-Man since we are throwing them out in the last few pages:

1) The early few arcs are legit great, but things start to slog hard after the Black Cat kiss. The marvel knights crossover arcs drag hard. The ultimate clone saga is the last decent arc before Ultimatum and Death of Spider-Man ended the ultimate Parker story.

2) The self insertion with Kong. Especially when Peter and Kitty broke up. It was really creepy watching Bendis live out the crush he had on her since the 80's with his own self insert.

3) All the dropped Mary Jane plot threads that actually could have been interesting. Cue the forgotten PTSD after the ultimate clone saga and being infected with Oz. Also, Annual #3 ending with them not having sex was a giant cop out. The relationship was past due for that point. Actually writing the characters at that next step would have been an awesome character development moment for both.

4) I honestly think it was a missed opportunity to not have MJ infected with the Oz compound and become the Spider-girl/woman of the Ultimate universe. The later half of the run would have been FAR more interesting with them fighting crime side by side for a bit and her realizing just what Peter went through on a daily basis. Also, it would have flipped the table and had Peter be the mentor figure to her.

5) How badly the story was decompressed. Bendis knew he was writing for the trade and the 6 issues that made them up. Many issues of an arc would literally have nothing happen and then rush to finish in book 6.

6) The Whedon dialogue started to get old. It was forgivable for awhile but started to fall into the free form quipping instead of actual dialogue trap.

I got a bit more, but I'll save the sperging. It's a decent run, but not the gold standard that gets thrown around a lot.

Ducards son from Batman & Robin (2011). Basically has the same memo as Ghostmaker i.e. Batman has failed Gotham and should kill, which isn't unique but he was also 'someone Bruce knew in the past and was close to that the audience has never heard of before'. I think Damian killed him.

honestly the problem with Ultimate Spider-Man is the same as the Ultimate Universe in general

they wanted to modernize it and take it into another direction but they never actually sat down and frameworked the entire universe.

Tom King had Omega Men, Vision, The Sheriff of Babylon and Grayson before he was given Batman. All of those were well received and DC decided to go with him as main Batman writer. For comparison, Snyder had American Vampire and around 10 issues of Detective before DC decided to go with him as main Batman writer in New 52. Obviously Snyder worked out better for them, but there wasn't anything weird in particular with King getting picked for Batman.

Also, from what I remember Mister Miracle had solid sales (something like 35-40k per issue) and was very well received so my guess would be that DC decided to permanently move him to maxi series and thats why he got Strange Adventures, Rorschach and Batman/Catwoman.

I mean, I'll say this.

King, Snyder, and yes even Bendis have a sort of understandable "yeah I get why you're all getting A list books" mood to an extent.

I don't get why they gave Tamaki a mainline Batman book.

I picked up his 1997 mini-series and the Creole lady that shows up as a spirit to guide Remy was pretty amusing.
