Baby Blues

Baby Blues, to me, was very under appreciated for its time. I think because of the popularity of Zits, it didn’t get the credit it deserved to show a somewhat realistic version of whats it’s like being a new parent with kids. And yes, they even did have a TV show that was short lived and I remembered it used to air where I lived, along with Dilbert.

Either way, reading the strips and looking at the art made me remember this song for some reason:

It seems rather fitting.

So I heard Robin was raped twice. I know Devin grayson had Tarantula rape him for some godforsaken reason but like.....when was the other time?
Also this reminds me of the Sue Dibny and Apollo rapes. And its implied Barbara Gordon was raped in TKJ.

In the early 90s, there was a Titans member called Mirage. She had illusion powers, and a huge crush on Dick (LOL)...but he was in deep with Starfire at the time.

So she kidnaps Starfire, makes herself look like Kory, and then fucks Nightwing. Starfire later gets free and is pissed at both, not understanding that Dick didn't know until after the sex.

It was essentially rape by deception.

That Supergirl just doesn't look right at all, both the costume and the anatomy on her. Sometimes with comic designs I'm left with the question of "Was this an attempt to make the character sexy/hot or just poor anatomy knowledge?" with the answer seeming to typically be a mix of both.

Something that continues to baffle me is the aversion of women superheroes, the ones that are more brawlers, from having anything but twig like or similar appearances. I'm not saying they should look like bodybuilders, but they should have at least some kind of muscle definitions given how they normally fight. Just fits into the greater annoyance of characters having a specific backstory or set of powers but their body shape doesn't reflect that at all. Like if you made Green Arrow a giant buff Dorito shaped man or had a twink Superman who looked like he never worked a day in his life on a farm.

I don't know Baby Blues, but I appreciate the slight diversion from ancient capeshit soap opera.

The deltoid has popped off the right arm, the vertical squeezing of the skirt has affected the whole pelvis, and the breasts I think suffer from the fact that there's no such thing as cloth in a superhero costume, just paint. I'd stop just before saying this is someone who learned to draw from 90s comics, but someone too deeply sunk into the tropes and conventions, who wanted to be Jim Lee just a little too much.

Who is the artist?

Sure. They don't have to look like Arnie with tits, just like they can throw a punch without snapping something. Even Bruce Timm gave some of them shoulders.

When I drew more comic art I tended to use say, Jillian Michaels or Gina Carano as a guide to fit but feminine. Or pretty much any fitness YouTuber.
I think we've all seen enough yoga outfits irl to know it's not just like paint over boobs.

Ian Churchill. Worked at Awesome Comics before DC, notably. Which is important to note because Awesome Comics was owned by Rob Liefeld. Closed down in 2000 after 3 years of existence.

do you know of any website i could use to read this or zits? they aren't on my normal comic site.

Agreed. Even though the Satellite Era is my favorite JLA, the substitute team formed during The Obsidian Age arc of Atom, Jason Blood, Nightwing, Firestorm, Green Arrow, Faith, Hawkgirl, and Major Disaster was really great.
I really like the JLI/JLE era.
Been skimming the 2005 Supergirl stuff, and seriously, it feels like in every subsequent appearance of hers, she's wearing less and less skirt. Fucks sake, in issue 3 you can see what looks like her nipples poking out of her droopy breasts, and the skirt is about an inch away from showing her pussy lips. She's either 15 or 16 at this point, by the way. I don't care about that fact, mind, since I'm more of a degenerate manga reader than a comic book expert, but I didn't expect comics to reach mango level territories with their sub-18 year old characters.

Also she kisses Nightwing out of nowhere and then upon Nightwing stating that she's "like 15" after someone brought up said kiss, another person in the scene says "what's wrong with that?" for all I know, maybe the character in question is from a country where that's legal, but I doubt that's the case or that Loeb was actually thinking that far ahead. Have I stumbled upon an infamous trainwreck by accident? Issue #18 is apparently some meta fuck you to the people who didn't like it at that point, so I think I have.
yeah the 2000s Supergirl revival was a little trainwreck.
Trying to nail down a character's age in comics is always tricky, but it feels like they've especially struggled with Supergirl. Sometimes, she's an adult with some kind of career, then the next arc starts and a new writer takes over and all of a sudden she's attending high school. Then in some crossovers, she'll be portrayed as roughly the same age as whoever she is crossing over with, which is usually a vague early to mid 20's character. Basically, it seems to be whatever the writer chooses at the time. I don't remember her and Nightwing kissing, but if they had Nightwing saying how young she was, it sounds like that was a conscious decision on Loeb's part and definitely comes off as creepy.

Pretty sure his more villainous moments were retconned away. Nowadays, he's portrayed like a Doctor Doom lite. He typically gets mentioned in running his nation, which is pretty open about allowing super villains in if they don't cause trouble. It usually leads to throwaway lines about how they can't get X character without starting an incident. Since he's getting his own movie (possibly) I'm guessing they want to lean more into a good guy/antihero role for him. He's an interesting character, but I don't think he's a good fit for Bendis.
oh they're totally trying to get Black Adam to have a more proactive role.

He's not Bendis material though. Still, I'd rather have Bendis write him than G Willow Wilson.

Yeah and Mirage is like, one of the few Team Titans who didn't get erased by Zero Hour AND got to stick around for odd Titans gatherings.

Kinda weird.

Comics Kingdom has them.

Man I miss Foxtrot's dailies. It was always fun.

im poor and not shelling out money i don't have to read comics from the 1980s, regardless of how nostalgic it makes me.

if you don't have another option, that's fine, if i'm not willing to pay it's perfectly reasonable that i just don't get the content.

I can get the idea of wanting Supergirl to be the "fun, hip, sexy" Superman character that is not so straight laced, but that design might be one of the worst or second worst, I don't hate the design fundmentally I just think they take it to the very edge though, in contrast they did it so right in the 70's

But my personal favourite has to be the classic silver age suit

Also contender for one of the worst.

you may get a month or so of archived strips but it's probably easier to just try and get the compilation books used.

Supergirl is more polarizing than it needs to be.

I think they missed the point where Supergirl is just a younger and not-so straight laced member of the Superman family, until Conner Kent gets involved.

or does Power Girl still count as a Superman family member? I feel like modern Supergirl needs to be a mellowed out Power Girl and things would be fine.

Is it cool to still read Archie Comics? I always disliked what that CW show Riverdale did to the characters. They tried to make them seem like they were the second coming of Twilight.

they're never bad but I can't say anything constructive since most Archie stories are not only formulaic, but self-contained.

A good comic ending is sad, but also strangely comforting. If it didn't go bad, it had some measure of dignity as it ended.

So DC is trimming it's titles down in March during a relaunch of their entire line . TBH I don't know what to think, personally I expected the line to get cut to the heavy hitters thanks to Covid * And they said back in August the line would be trimmed by 25% * but I'd be lying if I said the recent cuts to staff don't have me a bit concerned.
On the positive side, asides of CSA, I can understand why those titles are being published, which was rarely the case back in the "good days". Now, I don't mean that I like creative teams attached or their plans for those characters, but I get why Suicide Squad with Peacemaker front and centre is being published. I get why we get another attempt to revitalize Titans franchise (instead of doing multiple Titans books per month) and so on.
