St. JP II Thoughts?

Hello hello,
As you all might know, Pope John Paul II's sainthood is just around the corner.
There are however some people opposing it, due mainly to his slowness/reluctance to do anything about the sex abuse problem.
Do the members of this forum ( Catholic or not) have an opinion about this?
I myself think the idea of naming anyone a "saint" is somewhat questionable, this coming from a Catholic born and bred.

I meant normal priests; that guy was an actual ambassador to the Dominican Republic from the Vatican. And he was removed and relieved of his duties because he was being investigated by the Vatican for child abuse. Sounds like the right move.

In terms of the others, http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wor...investigate-sex-abuse-cases-article-1.1730325. I suppose it's fair to say that he's moved too slowly on this, but I don't think it's fair to say that he's "barely mentioned it." (According to the same article, apparently Benedict personally defrocked hundreds of abusive priests rather than deal with bishops who were transferring them around. And I didn't even know he did that).

The lack of dealing with the bishops is the problem. For all we know, there is still shuffling around of priest pedophiles in Africa and Latin America, regions where the Catholic Church has a lot of power, and the police/legal forces are not up to snuff. Even today, the Catholic Church is the only major organization that fights agaisnt extended statutes of limitation for child molestation.

For anyone who wants a primer on the abuse crisis, I recommend reading the works of Thomas Doyle, a priest who has long since been disillusioned by the Catholic hierarchy.

This is a very well written (if depressing) history of the abuse crisis as we know it, written by the aforementioned priest:http://www.awrsipe.com/Doyle/2013/Thirty Years 7-21-13.pdf

Well, the Pope himself recently said in a big news stories 2% of clergy are pedophiles. 2% that he knows of or acknowledges anyways.

They're claiming that someone who allowed pedophilia to flourish among the people who looked to him for moral leadership is a demigod. Awesome. Stay classy guys.

Not that it really matters, but I think the rank of "Sainthood" has been trivialized and degraded.

I'd say this should be the requirement one must meet to qualify for sainthood:
  • Have all the traits -- in real life -- of a 20th level D&D Cleric or Paladin.
If you can't unambiguously cast Divine Magic on command, at will, in front of a camera, in a way that can be empirically detected and confirmed, then I'm sorry, Reverend Typicallo....y'all are just a guy in a silly hat who collects donations and pretends to be nice to people.
