Bashir, genetically engineered super human? Nah, he's a basic boring doctor type who whiney and annoying as his main character traits.
That wasn't the original Bashir though. The original character really was whiney and annoying and said wrong things to women when not confusing a preganglionic fibers with postganglionic nerves.

My biggest issue with DS9 was that the main cast was massively under used.

The best episodes I remember are always the ancillary cast. Any Ferengi episode was always great fun, toss in the Grand Nagus or Quarks mother or even Brunt and pow! Garrack routinely stole the spotlight anytime he was featured and even Dukat was ham level great 90% of the time.

Throw in any mirror universe episode, (mirror Kira was ball lickingly awesome), and you could see how the actors shined outside their otherwise dreary roles.

Martok and Worf Klingon episodes were always entertaining and even Wayuen was hard to not love as a smug scheming bastard.

Compare that to the main cast. I cant really think of one purely main cast episode that stands out. Which is a crying shame as the original writers had some bad ass characters to work with.

Kira was a tough as nails revolutionary with a religious background but after 1 episode she's a perfect XO to Sisko despite their obvious differences.

Dax is a 700 year old being full of weird and strange life experiences but nope ...turns into a bog standard Star Fleet science officer.

Bashir, genetically engineered super human? Nah, he's a basic boring doctor type who whiney and annoying as his main character traits.

Hell, they had to go and give them a ship in later seasons to allow them to do some actual Trek like episodes.

I dunno if the writing team was swapped out after the 1st few episodes but such a great opportunity wasted.
I...I genuinely don't think you have watched the show if you think the main cast was dreary or underused.

In the pale moonlight, The visitor, Trials and Tribble-ations, The Way of the Warrior and I could go on with a large list about other great main cast episodes. I can't really fathom anyone having this opinion after watching DS9 to be quite honest.

So given how the treated a lot of the older characters in Picard...what characters do you hope don’t end up making an appearance, and what shitty thing would happen with them if they did?

I'm half expecting them to bring back Sisko with a different actor playing him and have him be a completely different character in all but name.

If Geordi shows up in Season 2, they are almost certainly going to make him gay. I know he had a female love interest, and he even ended up married to her in the possible future of all good things, but these guys never saw that episode. And the letter people have been trying to make Geordi gay forever.

If Worf shows up, they'll probably put him in the shitty STD Klingon makeup.

The IP rapers are heavily into retconning faggotry wherever possible. It's really the only quick and easy way to vandalize characters without having to focus multiple episodes around them. Given that kurtzman trek is 99% cameos and nostalgia references, it's the cheapest laziest way to accomplish it. So I'd expect references to Bashir/Garak suddenly being homosexual, and as already know they are toying with Kirk being the same. If they bring back The Doctor no doubt he'll be partnered up with a man.

If Picard 2 ever actually gets made and they bring back Guinan as they claimed they are going to, I'm sure she'll be transformed into a bitter mean mouthed BLMer, or basically 2020 Whoopi, the same way Picard is now just 2020 Patrick Stewart.

The truth is they've destroyed so many of the beloved characters so fast that they are already out of top tier options and hitting the B team now. Worf is by far the most beloved character from 90s Trek to remain untouched. And as was stated above me, if they do bring him back it will only be to give a giant Fuck You to the fans by making him into an STD Klingorc.

Bashir was the Geordi of DS9.
He was, until they retconned him and said he was actually a Khan-like superhuman with super intelligence and probably super strength and super ambition, but he was just hiding it behind a facade of goofiness so he wouldn't get found out.

When he stopped hiding his true nature, he finally got (a) Dax, so we're also supposed to believe he was pretending to be The Virgin Julian when he was really The Chad Bashir all along.

I'll agree with you that it was definitely a retcon making Bashir genetically engineered. But I have a hard time having a problem with that, since they saw fan reaction was poor to an obnoxious character, and retconned him into not being obnoxious, while also giving an acceptable enough answer as to why he was so obnoxious early on. (as you said, he was "just pretending"). It wasn't perfect, but it could have been a lot worse.

I could see Janeway coming back although there's already Admiral "SheerFuckingHubris" Clancy. Geordi will be gay. Beverly Crusher is probably dead. Worf will never show up because of the whole Klingorc design and the actor implied that he hated the prosthetics. Wesley might show up since Wil Wheaton is the best cocksucker in the business.
Patrick Stewart said that he wants Whoopi Goldberg to appear in the second season but I don't see the point of bringing back the character since she serves no purpose other than to be the "magical negro".
Whatever happens, you know that it will be worse than the first season because the character that has his name in the title of the show is dead.

I agree.

I just had a thought. If they couldn't get Janeway to be "Admiral sheer fucking hubris" (and still not sure I'd have even wanted her for that role,) then it totally should have been Admiral Bitchayev instead.

I like to think that all the brain power in the world isn't enough to keep someone from being an autistic sperg. Heck they had multiple episodes about that exact thing with the misfits. I find it entirely possible uber-mensch Bashir couldn't figure out how to be likeable while blue-collar O'Brien was beloved by everyone.

Later in the show, Bashir had grown enough to be confident and it helped that he was no longer on edge hiding a huge secret.

I'd buy that Garak would seduce anybody, male or female, if it helped in his mission (hence the low key flirting with Bashir in the first few episodes) but he stopped doing that early on because Bashir is very clearly straight.
Garak is totally job-sexual. He's only banging someone if it's for the good of Cardassia

How is it Dax has been in Starfleet for god knows how many decades and is only a Lieutenant in DS9? Does each body the symbiote bonds with have to redo the Academy every time?

I mean, Dax got bumped back down to Lieutenant JG when it infested Ezri. (Jadzia was a Lieutenant Commander). So yes? Although I think Trill are usually supposed to be more accomplished by the time they get infested, Ezri was an emergency situation.

I don't really have a problem with it, because they used it to tell some interesting stories. But it robbed Bashir of some character development. Most characters changed naturally over the course of the series--Jake grew up, Nog chose new role models and became an officer, Odo found his people and made peace with his identity--but Bashir just kind of got rebooted into something else. They could have done something subtler and more interesting with him.

Trill edit: When introduced in TNG, Trill worms suppressed the personality of the host. There'd be no Curzon Dax or Jadzia Dax, it would just be Dax riding around in different humanoids. In DS9 they retconned it to be a new, composite personality with each joining. So each one probably does have to start from the beginning in whatever career it chooses.
