I have never understood WHY the Federation would even want Bajor as a member world. The Bajorans are a race of religious nuts. No, I don't care that their gods do technically exist. They act as irrationally as people who believe in bullshit made up gods that don't exist. They used to have a caste system, only abolished because of the occupation, and then the moment they reinstated it they started behaving like savages up to having one of them push a dude to his death because "Me no want you be priest, your caste unclean!" and killed him when he refused to resign from the priesthood.
And that was the one incident we SAW. How many times did that scene play out on Bajor? How many times did that scene play out on DS9 but with a beating instead of an act of murder?

These people are unpredictable zealots who try to decipher and act on the words of aliens they don't understand and are actively opposed to understanding for religious reasons. If the next Kai interprets some prophecy wrong or has an orb experience they don't understand they could get it into their heads that the Prophets want Bajor to wipe out all "corporeal, linear lifeforms" and start a fucking galaxywide jihad. Or if they thought the Prophets wanted human sacrifice, they'd start yeeting babies into furnaces the next fucking day.

Why the fuck would you WANT people like this on your side?
And because they went untouched during the Dominion War, they're basically Space Israel at this point.

That got me curious as to why the Federation was there in the first place, so I went and reviewed the first episode of DS9. The reason the Federation is present in the first place is that the Bajoran government asked them to provide relief efforts after the Cardassians withdrew as stated below.

Then after the discovery and stabilization of the wormhole the Federation decides to capitalize on it by establishing a more permanent presence at Bajor.

It seems that if the wormhole wasn't present, the Federation would have provided aid the the Bajoran government, then left after the situation on Bajor had stabilized. However, with the discovery of the wormhole the Federation wanted a strong as possible presence near the wormhole to control passage through it. This included inducting Bajor as a member of the Federation.

So why does the Feds tolerate the religious fanatics? The same reason the U.S dealt with the various tribes in the Middle East for control of strategic resources. Though I think the Federation came out better than the U.S did in the long run.

I kind of saw the Bajorans as more of a Space Panama than Space Israel.

During the show, sure. After the show? Well, DS9 couldn't decide if they were the space Jews or the Ferengi.

there's several slurs for Cardassians
there's no slurs for Bajorans
simply calling them Bajoran is enough, there's no reason to make things worse
Space Jews.

In case anyone else has fond memories of the Birth of the Federation PC game they released in the 90's, it looks like there's a similar game being made by Paradox that just had a trailer released.

Dukat's in the trailer so I assume we can play as the Cardassians and exterminate the Bajorans properly this time.
I fucking loved it. A Paradox Star Trek game? With Gul Dukat on the cover? FUCK YEAH.

I've really enjoyed watching through The Next Generation, but Up the Long Ladder was a terrible episode. What the hell happened there? "Let's mix these two completely opposite groups together, one that finds sex repulsive and another that's traditionally monogamous, and push polygamy on the recommendation of Dr. Pulaski!" and they just kind of end the episode on that note. That's degenerate as hell.

I'm sure the scenes with the needles going into Pulaski and Riker's stomachs, with the horror music in the background made a significant number of needlephobes uncomfortable, too.

... Isn't that the episode where the group that finds sex repulsive is comprised of clones made from a handful of unique doners and, have reached the end of cloning viability? They are free to ignore the polygamy suggestion IIRC.

You're telling me their whole story arc wasn't being space jews that survived the holocaust?
DS9 is the sequel to the Cardassian Occupation, so in the logic of the show, Bajor becoming an ascendant regional power is a logical progression for them, especially when their primary rival is completely ruined from the Dominion War.

The Pah-Wraiths were another issue. The Cardassians were well within their rights to occupy Bajor out of defending themselves if they summoned all kinds of wack shit like that all the time just for the lolz.

So..... basically like this then?

You say that now but its going to be a nightmare of dlc content and end up costing $500+ to get all the content. Lets not forget how paradox operates. and you just know there will be $25 add on factions and game systems, likely borg and dominion at a minimum

Personally if I were developing a grand strategy star trek game i'd go more of a space empires 4 route with the amount of customization it allows. I mean in that game you design everything, have a massive research tree and can build everything from space stations to dyson spheres

While going though one of my hard drives I came across an unfinished star trek themed chess game that I saved a while back from /strek/ and I thought I might share it here. The game is unbalanced, broken, and buggy, but is still fun to play and I think there are a few people here that would enjoy it.

I dont care if they nickle and dime the dominion. If they bring in voices and have Dukat talk for any extended amount of time? That's an instant buy.

Man imagine if they pull a Gihren's greed and allow Dukat/Cardassia the difficult but doable option to be legit good guys, That would be great. Maybe even a mirror mirror evil Fed option?

Bajor is the Ukraine of Star Trek.
At least Bajor was smart enough not to get in a proxy war against the dominion.

They won't because they can't. Marc alaimo has gone pretty downhill over the years and his voice is pretty much gone at this point

let me know how it is.
I finally got around to reading it earlier this year. It was okay.

It is based around a character from the DS9 episode "Cardassians". Rugal is a Cardassian raised on Bajor by Bajoran parents. His real father shows up on DS9 one day, and Sisko makes a crazy decision to send him back to Cardassia.

A common tactic on Cardassia is to steal an enemy's child and then hide them away for a while. Dukat actually does this a few times in the series.

So the story is about Rugal's return to Cardassia. It is kind of a fish out of water story, where we get to see Rugal learn about Cardassian society. There is a power struggle on Cardassia between the military, the Obsidian Order, and the Detapa Council. Rugal hates Cardassia and his bio-dad, and wants to reform the society. Then the Dominion War happens. It is kind of a dreary book, since life on Cardassia sucks.

It did scratch the Trek itch I was feeling. Only read it if you really like the Cardassian storylines and books.

Well, the new season of Strange New Worlds has started. A by the numbers episode, couple interesting character moments. Still 37,000% better than Discovery at least.

Sadly they did add a token tranny to the crew, not sure if a regular character or recurring. Watch for him/her/them in the transporter room.

Edit: Noah Lamanna is its name. Height is 5' 1". I'm voting pooner.
