Where's the hate for Shelby coming from? I never understood it 25 years ago, I don't understand it now.

You ever watch a TV show and there’s a character with a name that’s just too close to a dog’s name, and you can’t take them seriously? Like, how are you supposed to be invested in their character when they’re named Bailey? Bailey! I can’t. You can’t have a hard nosed, tough talking commander named Shelby.

Shelby's haircut, let's talk about that for a minute. “Hey, cut your hair like you’re in a 1980s jazzercise video, but... you’re also supposed to be on a spaceship in the future. Good luck with that.”

I can think of worse names. Maybe they should have named her 'von Falkenhayn' or something like that. Just to piss off people even more.

It's apparently in line with Starfleet regulations.

This is one of the most autistic complaints I've heard about anything.

I can sort of see the hate for Shellby, but with Bitcheyev in the same roster it's hard to notice her
Yo, we gotta get another season of Picard where he's just in a wheelchair following Nechayev around while she calls him a pussy no-balls who can't keep up or even throw a punch.

I'd need a whole box of incontinence pads to keep myself from pissing from laughter, but I'd never miss an episode.

TBH, I would have prefered it if they had killed the "sheer fucking hubris" admiral. She holds the record for making me hate a character in just one scene.

The worst part is that the writers were likely cheering at her, thinking they had created a strong and independent woman who put Picard in his place or some other nonsense. Props to the actress, though; she nailed playing an unlikeable, hypocritical Karen character in a position of power in less than a minute.
The ironic thing is... If they had just made Admiral sheer fucking hubris be Janeway with only slight rewrites, that character could have been great. And I don't even particularly *like* Janeway.

Hell, come to think of it, if that character was Bitchaev, it would have at least been in character for her to be a bitch.

Now that you mention Janeway, I strongly suspect the reason she never showed up on Picard is because Jeri Ryan also happened to be there. It's no secret that Kate Mulgrew and Jeri had some bad blood, and it's very likely they had to choose only one of them, or the other would refuse to show up. And they chose 7of 9, over Janeway.

I doubt Mulgrew would have refused, because she did agree to be on the animated Star Trek spin-off Prodigy as a regular voice actress. I don't buy her rejecting a juicy Hollywood paycheck and a return to the spotlight, even as a cameo.

By the way, before someone brings it up, I don't buy them "reconciling" at all. Actors say that and pretend to love each other for the cameras because the producers force them to. You should only believe it if you see them being friends when they aren't forced to, or out of convenience.

Yeah, it’d be the exact opposite of that Maverick reunion scene, where the two former rivals hug it out like some feel-good, Hallmark crap. You thought that’s the message we need right now? Two enemies turning into friends? Nah, fuck that. Not today. :story:

They should have done that. Would have been epic if Basedway told Picard to get fucked.

Admiral Hubris was a bitch about it, but she was right that Picard had no business publicly contradicting and undermining Federation policy about the Romulans. She's even right about deciding which species lives or dies via the Prime Directive, which Picard was going to enforce himself were it not for Worf's brother commandeering the holodeck.

People in general dislike Shelby because she showed up to be a direct antagonist for Riker. I mean, she was there to tell him "I want you to go and take your place". Riker is a fan favorite. It was never gonna land well unless there was more developing for her character.

With that being said, she's basically a more toned down version of a boss girl, a Wesley on speed, and too close to a Mary Sue. She shows up and she's presented as the expert despite they knew of the Borg for, what, one year? (This was before "we knew from long ago" retcon). She was meant to know more of the Borgs than the people who actually witnessed them and had to escape them. Which, ok, I can deal with her being a diligent officer who knew of the threat and was focused on help. But she was rude and too full of herself. Every Boss Girl we hate know is Shelby on steroids.

"Monster-in-law" characters all are cut from the same cloth. Can’t get enough of the horizontal mambo.

It’s like every one of them is Judith Light from Who’s the Boss?
That's not Judith Light, but Katherine Helmond, who played her mom, Mona. She's the one who was a flirt.

When I see shit like this I wish The Dominion had won

That girl on the left... I hate her. I don't care people call me racist or whatever, I hate her with all my guts. Everything about her makes me want to punch her in the face...

Trust me, I don't debate that. If this had been in TNG, the admiral would have been in the wrong or secretly evil. But I think it was just a scene designed to shame Picard, which is why it was so terrible for me more than the situation itself. Even if Picard was wrong, I still would have expected more from him than to simply walk away with his head hung low.

It was part of the humiliation ritual they subjected Picard to, along with Raffi guilt-tripping him for being rich and privileged in what is supposed to be a post-scarcity, post-money era of humanity. We were meant to believe that Picard was in the wrong for much of that first season. It was part of his character assassination.

I don't mind Picard being wrong, but seeing him being reduced to just a puching bag was painful.

I refuse to watch the first 2 seasons of Picard even now, so I don't have much context outside of that clip for why she's being a bitch, iirc it has something to do with him helping the Romulans against Starfleet orders, but to me it isn't so much what she said as how she said it.

Picard has saved the entire quadrant multiple times over. If it wasn't for him, she'd be a 'sheer fucking Borg' more than once at this point. Who the fuck is *she* to be talking to the hero of the federation like that? At least if it was Janeway, that scene would have the gravitas of two legendary captains clashing. Similar to this one.

Was gonna write out a much longer comment but I'll just say this: skip the first two seasons of Pikerd and watch the third season only. Upon retrospect ya it sucked too but had some decent ideas and the characters were slightly better.

I still haven't watched a single episode of SNW. The fact that they start out with J6 as having led to WW3 angers me to no end. I hope the show ends soon.

Most of Nu-Trek's dialogue has been written for bratty teenagers, so they're probably ecstatic to have some actual bratty teenagers to write for.

I admit the lack of profanity was a hard sell even in old Trek—after all, it’s an organization inspired by the military. Adults rarely speak that clean among friends.

But there was a reason for it: the show aimed to depict a future where humanity had evolved, focusing on mature adults who resolved conflicts through intellect. An occasional curse word in an extreme, shocking moment? I could still buy that. But New Trek makes the crew sound like 14-year-olds sneaking “fuck” behind their parents’ backs. Words like “fuck” aren’t just used sparingly for impact. It's like they just want to sound edgy, and be like "this isn't your parent's Star Trek". Ironically, their attempts at maturity, end up being very childish.

It's more like Picard saying the Federation should help the Romulans--whom are a hostile government that didn't ask for help in the first place*--and criticizing the Federation for not helping despite the Feds' android slaves committing 9/11 on Utopia Planitia. Then he wants to come out of retirement to pursue his own agenda for personal reasons--which Shaw also chatisized him and Riker for until the plot cucks him out of his chair. So, while I wouldn't have told him to fuck off, I also would have said no.

*And then some senator got so pissy at Picard he challenged him to a sword fight. Bad Robot Romulans are dumb as fuck. Nero spent 20 years floating in space wanting revenge instead of going straight to Romulus to warn them of the impending supernova. The Romulan government not using its vast interstellar navy to save what can be saved of their civilization.
