I've had that feeling listening to Bob Dutko on WMUZ. He is constantly dropping Star Trek TNG references and he's a Christian radio host.

Dude I've listened to priests drop Trek references (of many varieties) in podcasts and talk.

However much the show may have hated religion, there's a lot of us religious folks (and bots) out there who enjoyed it anyway because good shit is good shit.

One of my favorite bits in all of Star Trek is Picard figuring out that he's not really dead because he doesn't believe Q could be God.

it's really basically just TNG and even then there's a lot of exceptions for space religions depending on the ep
TOS had plenty of overt references to religion existing, like the time Kirk does the wedding iirc there's a tell the chick's catholic or something

Ooh, what did you have in mind for it?

The Federation enters a cold war with the Romulans after the Dominion War and rebuilds its fleet. Many new officers are pushed out of the nest to fill necessary positions, mixed in with experienced personnel from the Dominion War. This rebuilding includes more warships (a la the Defiant) and a return to including Marine detachments for certain ships.

The Klingons enter a formal alliance with the Federation with Martok as Chancellor, Bajor enters the Federation, and the Cardassians enter their own rebuilding phase where the provisional government is split between three main parliamentary coalitions: pro-independent Cardassia, pro-Federation, and a pro-Romulan faction that wants a return to the Cardassian Union pre-Dominion War. The Federation is still cleaning up Jem'Hadar holdouts and Vorta-turned-warlords all while patrolling the Neutral Zone to keep the Romulans at bay (who have a numerical advantage and are cunning as ever). My fanfiction stories are the missions of one of these new ships commissioned to clean up and sentry duty, mixed in with standard Trek adventures and political intrigue (especially with the Cardassians).

The final story is supposed to be a new president of the Federation winning an election based on "going back to the way things were," scaling down Starfleet operations, the ship getting decomissioned, and the crew reassigned.

I will take my autism stickers.

Edit to add: I ignore Nemesis (which has the Romulan supernova and abolition of the Romulan Neutral Zone) and I ignore everything after Enterprise.

Honestly, that sounds a hell of a lot better than what we eventually got. Starfleet scaling back warship production and actually going back to more exploratory and nation / alliance building makes sense, considering the after effects of the Dominion war being felt throughout the quadrant. I really can't wait for this era of "ORANGE MAN BAD" allegories in media is over with. Virtually none of it's watchable even if it is just to mock it.

TOS was done during a much more religious time so more bones were thrown in to try and make it more appealing.

In the Apollo episode Kirk outright says, "We have no need of more gods. We find the one, sufficient."

And during the Roman episode there's the whole ending about "it's not 'the sun' is coming, but 'the son' is coming - Jesus will be there soon."

But you can tell sometimes these little nods have a tin ear to them.

that wasn't s much an aside as the bit with Apollo, that was basically the b-plot of the episode
now that I think about it I wonder how the Blish novelization handled that
the punchline of "they don't mean the sun, they mean The Son" won't work so good if the text gives it away immediately when they first bring it up

My fanfiction takes place during the military build-up and the crew is far more militant than, say, the Enterprise crew from TNG. Their mission is military in nature - eliminate any Dominion holdouts, keep a very close eye on the Romulans (who may very well invade while the Federation and Klingons are at their weakest), and Cardassia political shenanigans get thrown in because they're my favorite aliens in the franchise.

If anything, the "Trump" figure in my story is the president who gets elected at the end (which I have not really written at all, I just know how I would end it): he/she wants to Make The Federation Great Again by going back to exploration and diplomacy, argues that the military build-up is no longer necessary, and that the Federation is sacrificing its soul for security. I don't think the Romulan situation is resolved so much as Federation politicians decide that the Federation and Klingon are strong enough that the Romulans won't try anything. It's a fair argument: do we need to keep doing this? Is it worth it and does it accomplish what is set out in the Federation Charter?

I think the crew's mission ending, the ship decommissioned, and everyone getting reassigned due to political shifts is a very realistic outcome.

I honestly thought more of the Defiant because I really, really liked that ship. It makes more sense for them to use a design that's battle-tested than something sooper seekrit like the Vengeance.

By "continuation," I meant that DS9 is the jumping off point.
