I don't think any of us would ever be on a flagship like the Enterprise.

Nominate yourselves (or others) for staff positions and suggest mission parameters. I'd say we'd be put on, ahem, exploration and fact-finding missions in parts of space that the Federation doesn't really care about.

I would of course be third in command, in charge of guarding cargo.

I think my qualifications speak for themselves.
