Can I just pat myself on the back for calling out Strange New Worlds aping Community a while back? This week's episode was done in the style of a documentary. Skimming chicken fingers from the mess hall episode incoming!
It was shockingly the best Kurtzman Trek episode I've seen. It was pro-Star Fleet and there was little Millennial-speak. It's too little way too late but it was nice watching a new episode of something that felt like Star Trek for once.

STD felt like the Starship Troopers training video, except instead of satire they’re heroes, now clap. So after crawling through all that industrial filth I was stunned just to see some humanity.

But no you’re dead on, dude. I couldn’t figure out why SNW felt off and yeah, it looks like a student union in space.
STD as in Discovery?

Hell no. Frankly, the only Trek that could possibly hold a candle to Starship Troopers is the alternate mirror universe. Starship Troopers is literally about genociding an alien species and doing so with gusto. Thats why its awesome. Trek would handle that whole situation differently, they'd be obsessed with mind melding with the bugs so they could find peace.

Both franchises have their place but make no mistake they are nothing like one another and thats awesome.

Ya this was a pretty good episode, it's funny how even a little decent writing will take an episode a long way. It's not even close to the the B5 or Stargate SG1 documentary episodes but it's a fair try.

Kind of funny that for like 60 years the only “reporter” Star Trek could cough up was Jake Sisko, and he sucked. He was like an overeager high school paper dweeb.

Doctor Who had actual reporters on freakin’ Gallifrey! Starfleet’s entire press corps was just one kid in a cardigan.

Thing is, Jake's reasoning to stay behind on DS9 when the Dominion rolled in was smart. He knew they couldn't fuck him over too much or toss him into a labour camp. Being The Sisko's son has its perks in that regard.

Jake wasn't a reporter, he was a writer. He did the reporting thing so he could justify staying on the station with his dad. Jake wasn't ready to go off on his own yet.

Even in the 24th century, you don't hate them enough. You think you do, but you don't.

Has anyone ever noticed that William Shatner speaks with the cadence of French, but in English? Imagine him talking the way he does, but in French, and it makes a lot more sense.

This is the best Star Trek spin-off ever made:
Barren Planet: Part 1
Part 2:
Part 3:
Part 4:

I have seen a lot of these Sopranos-Star Trek videos and they're all great. The heavy breathing is such a great touch.
