Well given the Dominion War, the Federations lack of readiness to it was a miracle that Starfleet wasn't seen as a death sentence.
In fanfiction I've written, after the Dominion War, the Federation becomes more militaristic. They build more warships, restart training programs for infantry, and show their teeth more. To me, it makes sense that the Federation and its citizens would want to prevent a Dominion War situation from happening again. The Federation didn't have enough warships and had nothing to combat the Jem'Hadar soldiers. The Klingons don't seem to use any small unit tactics, while the Jem'Hadar did. Up until that point, the Federation relied on their superior technology and the Dominion countered that hard.

I'm of the opinion the Federation dares its malcontents into colonization. You want to run a Navajo or Irish Amish ethnostate? We'll help you pack! Want to be free of our restrictions on genetic engineering? We'll let you create your Masterpiece Society if you go beyond our borders. Oh, you decided to become Antifa and destroy your planet? That's not our problem!
and when a group of people want to leave, the Federation is like: "No" and they send the Defiant to nuke the colony from orbit.

Dougherty had the right idea, the Federation should use those drones to grab people with transporters and chuck them into another galaxy.

From my knowledge, the border wars with Cardassia was some the Federation only gave like minimal attention. Yeah, there were shit battles like the ones O'Brian fought and jaded Maxwell, but they didn't throw their heavier ships at it. See how effective Maxwell was with one Nebual-class ship.

Archer teaming up with Bobby Bacala in prohibition-era New York to fight Nazis, that’s literally the same reason people love The Rocketeer. Nazis + weird uniforms = good.
There's an alternate, better, timeline where The Rocketeer was a massive hit. Alas, it was not to be for us. I feel like the people that connect with that movie really love it, for me it's in my top 20.

I've always wondered whether the Star Fleet had any real ground pounders. I just can't see you're average Star Fleet security officer as a door kicker. I know that they have the Klingons for that, but surely they would need to have someone or something to fill that role.
I mean, sure, O'Brien has told many a Cardie to put their mouth on the curb, but he can't be everywhere at once.

I get that budget constraints (and maybe a little bit of Gene being a twat) meant there wouldn't be doorkickers in TNG or DS9, but they were desperately needed for in-universe consistency.

It's one of the reasons I liked the MACO's so much in ENT. They felt like a particular aspect of Star Trek you never got to see, then they were disbanded offscreen.
I liked how they kept bringing back the MACO cast as well. S. Money, a character that I don't think ever got a line, kicked ass.

Well there was a follow-up to The Rocketeer a few years ago in the form of... a Disney Junior cartoon.

I had no idea this was a thing and now I am just very sad. That movie deserves so much better than this.

They had Davy Crockett-type mortars in TOS. Now I definitely want a mini-series about a young O'Brien using mini-nukes to fuck over the spoonheads.

Oliver Harper's YouTube channel goes into some of this. After Batman ’89, the studios were like, “Let’s make more dark, pulpy shit,” but nobody wanted to pay for any actual comic book heroes.

So instead they just started digging through old 1940s characters, Dick Tracy, the Phantom, the Shadow… plus they tried to make it dark and violent like Batman. Even The Rocketeer had some death scenes that made me go woof.

To be honest, that whole 'time period' never did it for me. I do like The Shadow, but I think it's mainly due to Alec Baldwin carrying that movie, like a marine carrying heavy sandbags.

I might be entirely wrong (and I am also too lazy to go back and check), but you were the one doing those green texts with 'vulcan love slave' LT and the pakleds, right? Those were amazing.
Correct. Don't forget about the Bajoran mission. That one was really funny.
