That's because Jay knows that stuff.Picard could be something different, but it’s going back to the same old well—the Borg and Romulans.

Babylon 5 was more influenced by the Lord of the Rings than Star Trek.I maintain that ME was overall more influenced by Babylon 5 than Star Trek, but then B5 was obviously influenced by Star Trek as well so I guess I just made it an incest threesome.
So... about that Species 8472... can they be terrifying? Discuss.

Quick, somebody call Mr. Boothby, he knows how to deal with weeds.
Actually, this is somethng I joke about. There was supposed to be a fifth founding race, but they got cut out of ENT. It could be because they might've been considered too generic, or even offensive. If you've seen TOS: Return to Babel, these guys were wandering around.Babylon 5 was more influenced by the Lord of the Rings than Star Trek.
And if you catch it, he's having that conversation with GIR, too.You know Star Trek Picard is trying too hard at being mature and failing badly when even known notorious edgelord Johnen Vazquez, creator of Invader Zim and Johnny the homicidal maniac, is the voice of reason and he thinks you're going too far with the edge:

Jhonen Vasquez on Twitter: "I agree there. Star Trek was always able …

I don't understand the thought process behind those creative decisions. Why not make a box out of plywood (like any other tv show) instead of wasting a ton of cash on several 3D printers that aren't even "Trekified" (no LCARs on a small LCD screen or a Starfleet insigna on one side of the device)? This bullshit triggers me:
That "3D printer" laser effect was introduced in STD, I don't know why they can't just use a similar effect to the one from the Berman era.Everyone in the world will understand what it is without making it look like a 3d printer.
I like that you guys recapping don't bother with spoiler tags, because nobody is concerned about spoilers in this garbage show. I stopped watching this after the casino episode, but still had some hope that it could get better. It sounds like it's getting worse than I actually thought was possible. Wasn't Discovery season 2 all about how the AI was going to destroy all sentient life, and now we have a series where (thing) is going to destroy all organic life.. very original.
I realize that it's the pinnacle of very, very late Gen X to ask the question you've asked, but here we are. Why is it that I am annoyed that I've watched some of the episodes of this sober? How did they get me, a Trek fan since the 80s that grew up with TNG, to not even give a fuck about what happens to Picard?
I can't imagine watching *any* of the shit that passes for entertainment today while sober...I realize that it's the pinnacle of very, very late Gen X to ask the question you've asked, but here we are. Why is it that I am annoyed that I've watched some of the episodes of this sober?
I don't even know how the fuck that happens. Even with fucking Discovery I was at least semi-curious to see what happened. How in the everloving fuck do they make a post-TNG show with $10 million an episode, and make Star Trek just plain fucking boring?
Captain fucking Picard is on fucking TV again and I'm just drinking booze and browsing coronavirus news and not even paying attention half the time.
Sad, sad times we live in when a respected Shakespearean thespian proves himself utterly unprincipaled and willing to ruin someone else's legacy for his own selfish reasons. Gene Roddenberry deserved better.
Psst... his name is Patrick Stewart, not Patrick Steward... But otherwise I agree with almost everything else that you said. It's simple really.
You don't care about the characters. And to be honest, neither do I, or most people for that matter. The issue isn't just the overarching plot being boring, because TNG could make you have fun and care about people doing Smalltalk.

Heck one of Star Trek's best episodes, which even inspired this spinoff, is literally around 5 talking in a table. No flashy special effects, genocidal robots, borg cubes, or end of the world scenarios.
While TNG made an effort to earn your love for the characters, ST; Picard feels entitled to it and it assumes you already should love their characters because they cried or are part of an oppressed group (in-universe).
All the characters that debuted on this show are plain unlikeable, boring and one dimensional. It's so bad, that the villains actually make more sense.
As for Picard, he is basically a walking survivor's guilt syndrome. Instead of actually saving humanity and the federation from its falter on its ideals, it is only interested in saving this show's Mary Sue.
This is the saddest part of all. When I heard Patrick Steward described Brexit and Trump, as "dark times" I lost a lot of respect about him.
Not because of his political choices, really doesn't matter if you agree or not with him, but because he seems blind to actual suffering. Calling "Dark times" not getting his way in politics is just a tantrum. Living in dark times are those people having harsh times at homes with abusive families, or feel like there's no hope for tomorrow, or felt like weirdos or that they never fitted in until someone like Data inspired them. You know the people that made this franchise at least for half a decade.
Dark times are those that we are living now. Even if you think it won't be a big deal, in the long run, it is dark because a lot of people are scared. Lots of people are losing their jobs, the economy is taking a hit, and people need hope more than ever.
And when we needed words of hope from an optimistic show and its hero returned: Jean Luc Picard... he lets us down. But I don't blame the Picard of TNG, but the people behind this show that replaced him with a cheap imitation of him.
Ironically Stewart grew up in an abusive household, you'd think he would know better.Living in dark times are those people having harsh times at homes with abusive families, or feel like there's no hope for tomorrow, or felt like weirdos or that they never fitted in until someone like Data inspired them.
