This was apparently discussed halfway through TNG when it was thought the series might get canceled after Season 6 (or something), again in the pre-production for Generations and supposedly there was going to be one for Voyager but I doubt that third one was a very serious idea. It was abandoned in both TNG cases because they determined an animated show would actually be more expensive than shooting the live action one was.

If you look at how primitive TAS was its not really hard to see why. This isn't the 70s where a glorious five to zero frames of animation is all you need to get from scene to scene. Yes, you can do complicated creature effects and sci-fi stuff for less money in animated, but the trade-off is that you have to make all the backgrounds, sets and especially the people look convincing which usually takes a lot more effort to animate than it would to just shoot live action.

And Discovery.

An animated series definitely has a lot potential. You can make a lot of designs for aliens, ships, or places that would be either impractical or impossible to do in a live action series. Since you do not need sets built for filming and VAs as a general rule usually cost less than live action actors, you could have a small budget, but still have some interesting visuals.

The main question I would have is would the animation style be western or anime?

Can you imagine if they had run with the idea? Kes being present for "Year of Hell," Neelix being promoted to goldshirt, Janeway seemingly dying, and some other interesting stuff overall.

Firing Lien because there wasn't enough budget for her AND Berman's cocaine Wang is really indicative of the state Trek was in. Kim was insufferably generic.

But it is interesting to theorize.🤔

Borg are too sterile to be Slaanesh worshippers, but would be a better fit as Chaos undivided or Tzeentch worshipping Dark Adeptus Mechanicus.

Going back to Star Trek animated series idea. Japanese aren't opposed to using western designs so it is entirely possible to have anime series with Alex Toth's character designs.
 
Canonically speaking, the Miranda Class is a rather weak ship afaik...


...but damn, if it isn't one of Starfleet's sexiest ships. Only thing I would add would be some kind of tower-structure between the torpedo-thrower thingy and the saucer section to make it look less flimsy and so people can actually get there without crawling through half a kilometer of Jefferies tubes. I wouldn't mind a show featuring the adventures of a Miranda class ship somewhere between the TOS and TNG era.

The sexiest Starfleet ships: TOS Enterprise and TMP Enterprise, Intrepid Class and Reliant, in no particular order.

Obviously this is purely a hypothetical, and nobody could ever really know this for sure, but I do honestly believe that Voyager, as a whole, would have been... if not objectively *better*, then at very least *not* worse, if Harry Kim had died and Kes had lived.
 
To keep the universe in balance, Wang is doomed to entertain cruise ships for the rest of his life.
