I was thinking The Apple myself. God turned out to be a giant asshole computer.
I only lean on "Eden" due to the charismatic leader leading the Enterprise to "paradise", only to have it all go wrong, leading to his death. The way it goes wrong is probably more "Apple" like, but the story beats are like "Eden".

I would like to see a edit of all of TNG where Wesley is completely edited out.
I would settle for an edit where they leave him to his death sentence on the planet of gym bunnies because he fell into a greenhouse.
Well I can't offer you the former, but as for the latter:
Years later, these edits are still great.

@RumblyTumbly

I will go you one further why III totally undermines everything good about II: the only thing they mention that is aging in the film is the Enterprise herself. The rest of the cast aging in Khan was organic, poignant and well balanced. III chucks most everything good that Wrath of Khan set up.. its heartbreaking to see such poor writing used so shamelessly. Oh yeah, the one scene with Nichelle Nichols where she is enjoying retirement is played for a single cheap laugh. She did a great performance...but ugh

Regarding the Slow Motion picture; it is amazing to behold on the big screen. On TV... eh

The Voyage home; Its fun. I saw it opening day in San Francisco..with a theater full of my fellow Trekkies.. That alone was a unique experience..watching a movie set in the future.. where they come back to The City in the current year (late 1980s) When we walked out of the theater.. we all expected a stranger asking us for directions to the Nuclear Wessels.

V: I love the ending... "I need my pain." that bit was pure Star Trek.. and an amazing morality lesson we need more now than ever. The rest of the movie... I fast forward through.

You are 100% correct that The Undiscovered Country is under rated. While not quite as good as Khan... it has a strong story... and Kirk having to overcome his prejudice against the Kilngons.. for good reason is powerful

Generations has only one tiny moment that I like. It's only one line by Data: "Oh shit"

First Contact: It's cute...but none of the TNG films address why they are still together.. when even in the TV series, Riker was ridiculed a few times for not taking command of his own ship. Nor did they have the beautiful backdrop of the characters actually aging like Khan did. However, after watching "Chaos on the Bridge" I get the sneaky suspicion, Berman and Braga snuck in the Gene Roddenberry character into Cochrans... Watch it again, and every time someone says "Zephram Cocharan" In your mind, swap it with "Gene Roddenberry"

Insurrection: eh.. totally forgettable..even for Star Trek

Nemesis; a shitty remake of Wrath of Khan

There are no more Star Trek movies after Nemesis....

I'm actually enjoying it a ton... what series do you recommend I watch next?
Don't let anyone scare you away from TOS, when its good its spectacular. When its not so good its usually still a lot of fun. Try to find a download/DVD with the original effects too, I find the shitty 2009 CGI takes even newbies out of the experience a lot.

If you really liked TNG, even the shittier episodes, you will probably find Voyager more engaging than the average Trek fan does. Ideally you should just go in order though, go back and get TOS out of the way once you do TNG, then do the movies, then DS9, Voyager, etc. Enterprise you should really do last because its the most different.

I wouldn't reccomend anything out of nuTrek though. Maybe the Abrams movies if you really want more.

I can't believe the Seasons 1 & 2 Suck meme has made Q Who an underrated episode. its the episode I have the earliest memories of (it was the first my dad bought on VHS before we had decent cable) and honestly it sort of colored my opinion of TNG after that because no other episode of TNG is that good. Even Best of Both Worlds I put just below Q Who; the story is so tight that its perfect. Not a second of it is wasted. Even the scenes with the klutzy Ensign are subtely alluding to the rest of the plot before it plays out.

The Borg would never be that cool or mysterious ever again, and the TNG crew would never get their smug attitude patrolled like that again either. Its honestly one of the most grim Trek episodes ever made and people loved it so much the show brought the Borg back (there were some hints those worm things were going to be the real recurring enemy). Its stunning honestly.

Loved Armin Shimerman as a talking Betazoid box with a face. His defining role.

TNG really is where they got out all of their weirdness. Notice that DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise were a lot more grounded.
Honesty I think they were trying to recapture the sort of cheesy goofiness of the originals where you have crewmen being attacked by oddly colored shag carpet monsters without realizing that a lot of the weirdness was kinda by necessity due to what they had to work with at the time.

I've already grabbed TOS. Is there a quick way to check if it's the newer version? Something to look for in the opening credits or something? A specific episode?

I did enjoy Q-who but my fav. so far is probably Data's Day.

In 2009 or so when the series was remastered into HD, the effects were replaced with CGI. Here's a direct comparison of the second pilot episode. Some spoilers if you watch all the way to the end ,you should get an idea of what's different within 30 seconds though:

In my opinion the CGI looks very dated due to its era, and has very poor lighting and depth of color compared to the original. On top of that its just irritating when people screw with media like that.

I actually have no problem with the updated ToS effects. I think they purposely toned them down to match the aestetic of the show. In no way would I consider them detrimental to the experience or intrusive.

I watched one of the new ones the other day (only because there was nothing else to watch), and I finally understand why RLM made that joke about how the writers only know the very basic lore of Star Trek. It applies here too.

The movie was too obviously trying to appeal to people who DON'T like or know Star Trek by presenting the most stereotypical and yet generic traits of the characters. If instead of Kirk and Spock we had John Smith and Blab the Green Alien, it'd be exactly the same movie.

I beg to differ on VOY.

I've seen people compare it favorably with golden-age TOS (usually while bashing DS9), but that's baloney. If anything, it looks like a Sam Raimi show from around that time.

Where did this idea of 6 being underrated come from? Practically everywhere I've been it's always been highly praised and recognized as one of the "big 3" of Trek films: the equal of 4, surpassed only by #2 and GalaxyQuest.

Six is my favorite TOS movie, also the only one I was able to see in theaters on its original run.

This doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me, as the first thing I noticed in the HD remaster, once I actually had an HD TV to watch them on, its that the colors are considerably more vibrant and overall much richer. If anything it makes the very grey, dark, heavily shadowed CGI look all the more glaring as there's nothing remotely "toned down" about the show's visuals except for the new effects. They clash very directly with the rest of the show's look, especially in the HD versions.

You might be looking at things wayyy closer than most people. I grew up on ToS. You may complain about the colors, but you can't tell me that budgetary constraints making certain ships vague blobs of light or the shuttlecraft being larger than a starship in "The Doomsday Machine" weren't noticed even back then.

Having said that, I think they did it the right way in the Blu Ray DVD's by giving people a choice. I have nothing against the old effects, as I said they are in my blood. But I think the updates were done with care and in my opinion add something. They are not sacrilege to me at all.

Man, part of the appeal of watching stuff that's that old like TOS and TNG is having the original effects in.

Like I knew that people have said start watching TNG at Season 3, but I wanted to see the Season 1 early sets and beige furniture in all it's glory.

Generations = Probably the biggest missed opportunity in the franchise. Kirk and Picard together? The first TNG film??? Whoa! Unfortunately what we get is a total mess that doesn't live up to its potential.
It at least hits Kirk and Picard meeting each other out of the park though.

The "So long as you sit in that chair you can make a difference" speech made the rest of the movie worthwhile.

It's a topic of some debate. Nimoy was pissed when he heard about the remaster, but he came around.

The Special Editions of Star Wars got more wrong than right. All those additions take some people out of the story.

We agree on that. Each episode of Season 1 TNG cost $70k to remaster. Was anyone clamoring for that?
