Ok new trailer dropped, once again I will do a live reaction without having any foreknowledge beyond accidentally seeing the words "current year" as i scrolled down.....which in and of itself does not fill me with hope.
.....fuck me i am actually dreading this now. Either way time to torture myself with this raped and re-raped franchise once again...
All in all....yeah its rather appropriate that this trailer came out just before the anniverary of 9/11 because thats about the best comparison I could make to any lingering hope dumbasses might have had that nu-trek could ever stop being total and irredeemable shit.

Pretty sure the fake out is that Q is helping them repair the timestream in the past. Something else caused the timeline to go full dictatorship.
If we are going back to the 21st century then sanctuary districts and the Bell riots are in play. Also the lead up to the Third World War. (We know Europe went to hell politically and the Eastern Coallition, a major power player in the war, started forming.)
This actually could be an interesting concept. Paramount has already semi-retconned the Eugenics Wars into basically being a Cold War 2.0 deal, but WW3 is one of those things we've only gotten bits and pieces of. It ran from 2025 to 2053, was full nuclear, and left very few major governments/cities unscathed. (And was in someway linked to genetic modification/engineering that traced back to the Eugenics Wars.)
P.S. Almost certain they are going to meet Guinan in the 21st century and use her ability to precieve divergent timelines to save the day and fix things.

Shatner is obviously an asshole. But he's a magnificent, gregarious asshole. Guys like that probably wouldn't give in easily if Chekhov or Sulu or whoever spoke up and told him to stop being a dick. But at least he'd have respected them for it, and they would've respected themselves more instead of seething about it well into geriatric age.

To he honest, I think Shatner is kind of a shitty person. A shitty person who really hasn't changed at all in 50+ years, even if he did play a truly legendary character that is still near and dear to all/most of our hearts. And as usual, I do believe that it's important to separate the character from his actor though...
You likely already saw this, and if you did (and hell maybe even if you didn't) this probably won't change your mind, but just look at the recent "feud" Shatner had with Red Letter Media, that by all visible accounts was entirely one-sided on Shatner's end.
I would also post Shatner's side of this story, but he hasn't given one as far as I can tell. He was just content to talk shit about RLM on Twitter, without ever even having a single conversation with them, and after blocking them over a reactionary joke that they made- Because Shatner boomerly confused them with the pet shop boys, and they made a joke back at him about it.
Like I said, Shatner's a fucking boomer. (RLM mentioned his later tweets in that video), he was mad at them pretty much entirely because of what other people tweeted to him about RLM on there, after he'd already blocked RLM. His reaction is still entirely bizarre.
I am by no means a psychologist, but if I had to guess, I would say that Shatner has histrionic personality disorder.

Well, there was an episode of Voyager where the crew traveled back in time to 1996 and completely ignored the Eugenics Wars.
There was also an episode of DS9 where Sisko, Bashir, and Dax traveled to the year 2024 right before a series of riots that resulted in major societal change as a result of the disadvantaged rebelling, so it's entirely possible they could touch on that as well.

I never really believed that guy on Twitter was really William Shatner, even before the RLM thing. The kinds of TV shows that guy is into and the way he adeptly uses millennial language portrays someone half of Shatner's 90 years.
I've even seen a name and face posted of the man that allegedly runs Shatner's social media. (Can't remember the name, but it's out there.)

That was my initial thought as well. But watching the trailer again, it looks like there's a lot of LA location filming, vehicular stunts, and big crowd scenes, which if anything would probably cost more than the cheap sets and Mass Effect: Andromeda-level CGI that we saw in the first season.
Honestly, my guess is that the creative team just thought "Hey, First Contact had time travel to correct a messed-up future, and everyone liked that. Why don't we just do that again?"

Shatner on Twitter is the real person. He watches anime, Supernatural (he's friends with the 2 actors). As for the other guy, he's probably in charge of posting tweets about the charities that Shatner supports.

I think a lot of those Tweets are definitely Shatner himself, but he definitely has some kind of social media intern as a joke writer of sorts. I also seriously doubt he allows the guy to just go pick fights with randos on his behalf, so he probably at least approves the general gist of anything done by that guy.

I've seen it many times where parasites start swarming all over an aged person and start doing things in their name. Stan Lee was the latest example, and that was so sad to see. Nobody stepped in to help him... everyone was using Stan for his money, even his worthless daughter.
We had something like that happen in our family, too. Somebody conned my grandmother out of all her money. I guess that makes me wary, perhaps paranoid about these things.
