They will say that "ackshually" it happened between 2016 and 2020 with Blumpf who released a deadly virus that had a 99.9% chance of not killing people and it lead to a terrorist attack on the Capitol in January 6.
Ok new trailer dropped, once again I will do a live reaction without having any foreknowledge beyond accidentally seeing the words "current year" as i scrolled down.....which in and of itself does not fill me with hope.
.....fuck me i am actually dreading this now. Either way time to torture myself with this raped and re-raped franchise once again...
0:00-0:20: fucking christ they are over editing the shit out of this trash to try and distract the audience from how little fucking substance there is beyond generic "are you looking or are you running?" monologuing thats shit i have heard in like a half dozen different generic sci-fi franchises. Also the music is as always fucking overdesigned crap.
0:20-0:40: John De Lancy is acting with his voice....but he aint acting with his face. He looks like he is reading off a phone book. Also "LAWL ELL OH ELL PICARD IS SWEARING FUNNI" christ i cant wait till patrick stewart gets outed as a child fucker so that the cringe reddit retard cult around him finally fucking dies. Oh yeah and the acting in this trailer among the rest of team-retard is just as bad as they flail around the CGI set to pretend their shitty little tugboat is in danger.
0:40-1:00: "Q went back in time and turned our world into a totalitarian nightmare" - Incontinent old retard picard. "I FUCKING CALLED THAT SHIT NIGGAS!!!" - Judge Holden as he punches the air for having more or less guessed the fucking obvious months ago from the first shitty trailer.
Yeah.......what the fuck else could we expect? Also sixty of nine states the fucking obvious while constipated romulan looks constipated and picard continues to mumble out the most soulless and generic fucking lines I have heard in a long time. Oh yeah and picard is hitler i guess.
1:00-1:20: picard for some reason has the borg queen in his own private cum jar and is going to use her to go back in time. Had I the absolute slightest fucking esteem for the shitbag hacks in the writing team I would wonder whether this is going to be a reference to ole admiral janeway....but yeah thats way beyond the calibre of these clownfucks. Also clinically retarded blonde murderer is designated funni quip maker it seems....fucking kill me. More shitty over edited jangly keys are thrown at the screen to make us forget that cringe and onto the final length of this vision of the car crash to come.
1:20-1:40: aaaaaaand currentyear. Fucking fantastic. Picard's lines are so fucking generic and soulless it really cannot be overstated. I have said this before but i would unironically prefer it if Neelix was the one playing his part and hamming up the lines because atleast then i would get some warm nostalgia and not just dessicated disappointment at the sad old joke picard has been turned in to. Oh and fucking car chases. great. really what this franchise was missing......fucking christ they unironically have pulled a uwe fucking boll with this trashfire. And better yet car chases with sixty of nine and her elderly black crack addict dyke waifu aaaaaand now clinically retarded blonde murderer bint is making le'funny jokes about working on their relationship. Fucking Kill me.
1:40-2:00: the attempt to swell the music and spectacle into a crescendo goes about as well as the launch of the challenger as picard murbles on about how they need to change history while badly choregraphed fight scenes against evil currentyear cops and homeless people and who the fuck even cares else play out.
All in all....yeah its rather appropriate that this trailer came out just before the anniverary of 9/11 because thats about the best comparison I could make to any lingering hope dumbasses might have had that nu-trek could ever stop being total and irredeemable shit.
Pretty sure the fake out is that Q is helping them repair the timestream in the past. Something else caused the timeline to go full dictatorship.
If we are going back to the 21st century then sanctuary districts and the Bell riots are in play. Also the lead up to the Third World War. (We know Europe went to hell politically and the Eastern Coallition, a major power player in the war, started forming.)
This actually could be an interesting concept. Paramount has already semi-retconned the Eugenics Wars into basically being a Cold War 2.0 deal, but WW3 is one of those things we've only gotten bits and pieces of. It ran from 2025 to 2053, was full nuclear, and left very few major governments/cities unscathed. (And was in someway linked to genetic modification/engineering that traced back to the Eugenics Wars.)
P.S. Almost certain they are going to meet Guinan in the 21st century and use her ability to precieve divergent timelines to save the day and fix things.

True..even by Shatner's own admission, he was about being top dog. However, Koneig himself also admited he never spoke up about it at all- rather he clung onto a resentment for decades instead of direclty confronting Shatner on it. ...until very recently.
I highly reccomend reading Shatner's biographies, he's self aware of how big a douche he was.
Shatner is obviously an asshole. But he's a magnificent, gregarious asshole. Guys like that probably wouldn't give in easily if Chekhov or Sulu or whoever spoke up and told him to stop being a dick. But at least he'd have respected them for it, and they would've respected themselves more instead of seething about it well into geriatric age.
God damn that new trailer is horrible, part of me wishes that John De Lancie hadn't agreed to it afterall. At this point I'd pay money to see the new Matrix rather than even pirate this shit.
The best I can hope for is for this to be unintentionally completely off the mark. All ginned up about some straw man version of Trump and MAGA being authoritarian. Being completely oblivious to the fact it's representing the COVID authoritarianism. Or even for that kind of authoritarianism.
All we know is that this new Star Trek isn't principled, it won't be against authoritarianism, it'll be against the other side of current-day politics.
I bet we get something with a border wall. Completely tone-deaf to the notion that a Star Trek future is one where people don't need to flee their homelands because they aren't shit holes. Don't run from your problems, solve them yourselves.

To he honest, I think Shatner is kind of a shitty person. A shitty person who really hasn't changed at all in 50+ years, even if he did play a truly legendary character that is still near and dear to all/most of our hearts. And as usual, I do believe that it's important to separate the character from his actor though...
You likely already saw this, and if you did (and hell maybe even if you didn't) this probably won't change your mind, but just look at the recent "feud" Shatner had with Red Letter Media, that by all visible accounts was entirely one-sided on Shatner's end.
I would also post Shatner's side of this story, but he hasn't given one as far as I can tell. He was just content to talk shit about RLM on Twitter, without ever even having a single conversation with them, and after blocking them over a reactionary joke that they made- Because Shatner boomerly confused them with the pet shop boys, and they made a joke back at him about it.
Like I said, Shatner's a fucking boomer. (RLM mentioned his later tweets in that video), he was mad at them pretty much entirely because of what other people tweeted to him about RLM on there, after he'd already blocked RLM. His reaction is still entirely bizarre.
I am by no means a psychologist, but if I had to guess, I would say that Shatner has histrionic personality disorder.

Using that as my source, I'll bold (and bolding them didn't make enough of a visual difference when I previewed this, so I also made them a size larger as well) the ones that I think apply to him...:
In many cases, people with histrionic personality disorder have good social skills; however, they tend to use these skills to manipulate others so that they can be the center of attention.
A person with this disorder might also:
Be uncomfortable unless he or she is the center of attention : Obviously
Dress provocatively and/or exhibit inappropriately seductive or flirtatious behavior
: I don't know if this, (and/or how Captain Kirk stereotypically acts) is necessarily fair. But I do vaguely recall reading something about Shatner wanting the green "wrap around" outfit to hide his growing fat, so he'd better than his co-stars by showing more of his (compressed) chest in later seasons. This one is a bit up in the air though...
Shift emotions rapidly : Come on, we've all seen this man act before.
Act very dramatically—as though performing before an audience—with exaggerated emotions and expressions, yet appears to lack sincerity : He's an actor, so this is to be at least somewhat expected, but again... We've all seen this man act before.
Be overly concerned with physical appearance : Let's circle back around to that Green V-neck tunic that only Kirk was allowed to wear... Also, I don't know if Shatner actually being bald is a joke or not, but it's been a "joke" for literally decades now. I choose to believe that there's at least something to it. Even if there isn't, Shatner is clearly still a vain man even to this day.
Constantly seek reassurance or approval : Obviously
Be gullible and easily influenced by others : If you believe that RLM vid that I posted earlier (and as of now, I have no reason to disbelieve it) then yeah, Shatner is easily manipulated by people sending him shit on twitter.
Be excessively sensitive to criticism or disapproval : Lol, this goes without saying
Have a low tolerance for frustration and be easily bored by routine, often beginning projects without finishing them or skipping from one event to another : I don't know enough about Shatner's mindset to say yes or no to this.
Not think before acting: I'm gonna show some restraint here and *not* call Star Trek V this. I suspect that Shatner *thought* about directing anything Trek-related, for a very long time before actually directing the worst TOS film. How sad is it that there are *now* so many more worse pieces of Trek media now after that? @_@
Make rash decisions: No, I don't actually think that Shatner would ever do something *that* crazy if he knew for a fact that it would make him look bad to people.
Be self-centered and rarely show concern for others : Shatner is literally known for this.
Have difficulty maintaining relationships, often seeming fake or shallow in their dealings with others : This man literally has 4 exe-wives. No judgement, but I'm gonna say that this is a yes.
Threaten or attempt suicide to get attention : I have absolutely no proof that he ever did this, and I would in fact be highly surprised if he ever did. But it turns out that you don't have to check every box to have the disorder...
Shatner checks most of them to me. I think he's Histrionic.
I looked it up, and you are correct... That girl(now woman, I guess) definitely played a young Whoopi twice, 20+ years ago. It doesn't look like she's done anything since then though. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0428258/?ref_=tt_cl_t_14
That's a good setup for an "If I had a Nickle for every time I played a young Whoopie Goldberg 20 years ago, I'd have 2 Nickles. That isn't a lot, but it's still funny that it happened twice." joke.
They're obviously going to be bringing Whoopie back, she already said that she's coming back. She's just going to probably look like shit when they do.
Well, there was an episode of Voyager where the crew traveled back in time to 1996 and completely ignored the Eugenics Wars.
There was also an episode of DS9 where Sisko, Bashir, and Dax traveled to the year 2024 right before a series of riots that resulted in major societal change as a result of the disadvantaged rebelling, so it's entirely possible they could touch on that as well.

Shatner did nothing wrong. Mike is the one acting like a retard, he should know that his fanbase would alog Shatner over his refusal to participate in whatever shit that Mike wanted to do.
Shatner is old, sure, but he's had a big career and at his age he's allowed to do whatever he wants, including shitpositng on Twitter. Shatner is actually one of the few Hollywood people who take time to interact with non-blue checkmarks.
I never really believed that guy on Twitter was really William Shatner, even before the RLM thing. The kinds of TV shows that guy is into and the way he adeptly uses millennial language portrays someone half of Shatner's 90 years.
I've even seen a name and face posted of the man that allegedly runs Shatner's social media. (Can't remember the name, but it's out there.)
That was my initial thought as well. But watching the trailer again, it looks like there's a lot of LA location filming, vehicular stunts, and big crowd scenes, which if anything would probably cost more than the cheap sets and Mass Effect: Andromeda-level CGI that we saw in the first season.
Honestly, my guess is that the creative team just thought "Hey, First Contact had time travel to correct a messed-up future, and everyone liked that. Why don't we just do that again?"

Shatner on Twitter is the real person. He watches anime, Supernatural (he's friends with the 2 actors). As for the other guy, he's probably in charge of posting tweets about the charities that Shatner supports.

I think a lot of those Tweets are definitely Shatner himself, but he definitely has some kind of social media intern as a joke writer of sorts. I also seriously doubt he allows the guy to just go pick fights with randos on his behalf, so he probably at least approves the general gist of anything done by that guy.

I'm sure he wouldn't approve, but is he actually aware of what's being tweeted in his name? The man is pre-Baby Boomer, the Silent Generation.
I've seen it many times where parasites start swarming all over an aged person and start doing things in their name. Stan Lee was the latest example, and that was so sad to see. Nobody stepped in to help him... everyone was using Stan for his money, even his worthless daughter.
We had something like that happen in our family, too. Somebody conned my grandmother out of all her money. I guess that makes me wary, perhaps paranoid about these things.
