Star Wars Griefing Thread (SPOILERS) - Safety off

To be fair I'm sure the SW universe can have species that aren't male or female but yeah, that definitely feels pandery.
It is definitely pandering, as the character in question is human, and for bonus Mary Sue points, she is also the captain of a Super Star Destroyer that was captured by her band of pirates.

Wookieepedia said:
Eleodie Maracavanya was a human pirate ruler who was referred to variously by male, female and gender-neutral pronouns including "zhe" and "zher." After the fall of the Galactic Empire, Maracavanya and their pirate crew came to take control of the Annihilator, a Super Star Destroyer that once belonged to the Empire, which they renamed Liberty's Misrule. With this vessel under their control, Maracavanya came to be known as the "pirate ruler of Wild Space."

It has been said before, but the main problem with the Disney Star Wars movies is that they are written by people who don't like the original trilogy characters.

I've been reading the Thrawn trilogy this christmas. It's such a nice work, clearly written by someone who really loved Luke, Leia, Han and Lando and took great delight in coming up with new adventures for them.

Perhaps the Disney guys felt that Luke and the gang were "claimed" by the EU guys and have therefore done their best in writing them off?

This mess just feels awkward to me. It's Dallas' Bobby Ewing taken to the nth level.

Hey, Mickey, how's trying to tailor these movies to the Chinese market working out?

...oh.

Good... Besides some decent action scenes (at least IMHO), giving SW to Disney is looking more and more like a huge ass mistake. I may have a soft spot for SW: Rebels, but yeah - Disney's pretty much screwed up here, knowing the overall negative reception of this and upcoming films going forward, especially with Solo due soon and not looking like anything to write home about.

Now that China's onto the BS as well...
Game Over.

So I saw this film today (while suffering from a massive headache and a wry neck) and I found the film to be eh. it has some good parts in it and some really stupid stupid moments (admiral tumblr being a fucking idiot for not telling anyone about their plans) but overall, I didn't hate it or love it. I like Kylo Ren in this film at least, as he become more of his own character.

The salt from this guy is epic.
Holy shit this guy's commentary on the writing in these movies makes me very glad that he's not actually a screenwriter. I also love his "N-n-no you see I'M not sexist, THEY'RE the sexists for making characters not act like damsels in distress" argument. Good find.

So, what you're saying is - while this movie is bad, this guy sucks at reviewing movies, despite having 1-2 good points and should STFU? If so, then OK.

Personally i think the real killer is trying to do the "A film every year indefinitely" thing. You can get away with that with Marvel because 1.You have all those different characters to work with and 2.You can do different things with each of those characters. Captain America started out as a military superhero movie then evolved into more of a political thriller with The Winter Soldier, Thor is Sci Fi Fantasy Et cetera. With Star Wars on the other hand you really can't do that. The Original Trilogy and the Prequels had three years between each release. The Force Awakens had 10 years. The hype built up naturally instead of having to be generated each and every year. Actually having a plan ahead of time helps too. Between burning the old EU down to the ground and the indefinite yearly releases the brand has been badly devalued already...And it's only gonna get worse the further along we get. I wish I could say I'm surprised but I can't. This was easy to spot from the get go.

...oh.

They all tank in China. The original trilogy never debuted there so no one cares.

The Force Awakens made $125 million in China. Not staggering, but way better than this stinker.
