Starfield - Bethesda's new space IP: will probably be full of fun and easily trackable bugs

How do you think Starfield will turn out?

I am looking forward to Starfield, especially since it will be on gamepass. I just pray for mod support.
I will be playing it, but I wouldn't be pissed if it got delayed again.
I'd be pissed since it means The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 would be delayed even further.

15 year gaps between sequels is asinine, Bethesda and/or Microsoft needs to do something to reduce that gap.

I do wonder about modding for this. I remember reading somewhere that one of the problems with FO4 modding was that there was more hardcoded stuff than the previous games, and with all the new systems they're adding to this one I wonder if that problem will be worse with Starfield.

I don't care about the 1000 dead planets, or the fact that it's just 4 cities, plenty of space games have done well with no cities, just space.
What worries me is how generic everything looked.
I'm worried that everything is just going to look like contemporary space tech.
Even Halo had more character to its human designs.
It's set just 350 years into the future, there should be some vestiges of human culture. It would be boring if it's all just mono cultural with the lore just having humans exploring and settling planets.
Imagine taking a elder scrolls game and removing everything that makes the setting unique, then you're just left with the first elder scrolls game, Arena, which I don't think anyone has ever praised for its story or setting

I wouldn’t be surprised if outer worlds turned out to be better than Starfield.Obsidian is much better with story and RPG mechanics than Bethesda.Who have water downed their games to appeal to a mass audience. I’d like to see obsidian make another Fallout game. The only problem I had with New Vegas was the amount of bugs which is understandable as the game only had a year in development. Given the time and resources I’d like to see what they would be able to produce.

Chris Avellone and John Gonzalez left Obsidian, and Josh Sawyer is too busy political sperging on Twitter to make games. No thanks.

An amusing thought to think that starfield and outer worlds gets to vie for the spot of most generic and forgettable scifi IP
I guess if it came to it at least outer worlds had humor I guess?

People memeing it at No Todds sky have been providing much amusement but if it does turn out to be a NMS clone imagine the disappoint

It looks cool? It looks like a Bethesda game alright, not "I can't believe my eyes" amazing but still pretty jaw dropping at times, it looks better than Fallout 4 at least.

But Fallout 4 had an amazing trailer and wound up mediocre after all was said and done, so who knows, what I hope is much better writing this time around, the writing and story in Fallout 4 was so bland, even Fallout 3 managed to have a bit more personality despite also not having great writing.

One thing I hope to see is something like Chozo ruins in Metroid, ancient Egyptian style ruins but in space, that sort of thing.

The premise of the game is a dream come true though, this is what I wanted Mass Effect 1 to be but it was not quite, a "what if you could just fly around in space and land on every planet" game has long been something you'd dream about, here's hoping 15 years after Mass Effect 1 we can actually get closer to that idea (I guess No Man's Sky is like that but I don't like that game's art direction.

What happened to it releasing late 2022 though? Why did it get pushed back to 2023?

Nice to have at least one other western game I'm genuinely excited for.

According to leaks, the spaceflight was really rough. I would assume they want to avoid a FO76 situation.

While I like that they don't spam the games yearly like COD, these gaps are ridiculous. A 5 year gap or so is one thing, but it's getting to the point that people who were born after skyrim came out will be 18 by the time the next installment drops.

I'm cautiously optimistic. They specifically pointed out certain things like a voiced protagonist and the dialogue system from Fallout 4 and said "yea that sucked we're reverting those changes back to our classic game systems."

Bethesderp is far from perfect but it's nice to see a developer be like "yea we fucked up sorry" and not doubling or tripling down and calling their fans bigots like everyone else seems to do.

the FO76 shitshow also "humbled" them

Fallout 76's art and concepts were directly ripped from the OG Fallout 3 (Van Buren) made by Black Isle Studios. This is a common theme with Bethesda; what artistic talent they had was bled away such as Mark Jones who was responsible for much of the artwork for their games before Oblivion.

I remember when 343 said they learned their lessons of what they did wrong with Halo 4 and then proceeded to make Halo 5 lol. Bethesda doesn't learn, their buggy entry after entry shows that.

There's something I got to know about this game and can't get quite clear on, how exactly does transition from space to planet and vice versa works? Not seamless is disappointing but they need to at least have some of the illusion where you blast off, fly in the air for a bit, then maybe a loading screen and you're in space or you're flying towards the planet, entering it's atmosphere and then loading screen and you're in the atmosphere, a loading screen I can pretend to ignore well enough, but just give me at least some of the illusion and not all selecting shit from menus like ME1, I HATED that shit.

If they really don't want to give you any off the illusion of blasting off and landing then what is the fucking point? That makes me want to break my foot off in Todd Howard's ass.

That said at least it's closer to the dream than ME1 was, I also love the game's aesthetic, everything has a very "NASA" look and it manages to be realistic and believable without being too generic or too out there, they really nailed it and it probably took them a ton of revisions to get it right, it's been a while since I've seen a space faring sci fi aesthetic this interesting.

Yeah at the end of the day it's Skyrim in space, but does that not sound like fun? At least it's not another version of Skyrim.

They showed a montage of the ship leaving numerous planets in the same animation, so I assume it's a cutscene.

As for landing on the planet, maybe it's like the new Lego Star Wars where you look towards the planet and hold a button.

Yeah, I liked the aesthetic as well. Not too grimdark but the science station in the trailer looked just enough lived-in to be believable. I'll probably buy this, just not on day one, it scratches the space exploration itch and outer worlds looks a bit goofy to me.

If it's a cutscene I hope at least you have the option of viewing it from first person so you can pretend you're in control of taking off than just watching a third person cutscene of taking off.

Todd's right that it doesn't HAVE to be seamless in game transition, but there needs to be something that doesn't break your immersion too much, something that allows to play pretend with the fantasy of being an astronaut and blasting off and landing, that is literally a core element of the entire point of the game, you're an astronaut and you're exploring space, if it's just pulling up a menu, selecting "go to space" and boom, there you are (after a loading screen) that's is absurdly fucking gay.

But at least we we're way beyond Mass Effect 1 where you can only explore a square of a planet and space exploration is watching a lame little model of your ship float around a map, actually being able to directly fly around your ship in space and explore an ENTIRE planet? That's a legit "whoa" idea, I'm just worried about the transition from space to planet and planet to space, but hopefully they're smart enough to have some sort of workable compromise.

Nice to actually have a western game to be excited about again, shit was looking pretty bleak for a while there, it's also nice to think of finally having a good Bethesda game after 10+ years.

I really can't say enough positive about it's aesthetics, while maybe a few things are a little too generic, overall they nailed it, they managed to make a sci fi space faring aesthetic that looks realistic but not generic.

They're really leaning in hard on specifically a "NASA" look to everything, how NASA designs suits, ships etc and I fucking love it.

Outer Worlds went for retro futuristic but they picked the wrong one, it should have been Flash Gordon instead of "wild west in space" and while maybe the aesthetic was fine, the writing and "comedy" of the game was awful, pure Reddit soyness, the gameplay was incredibly boring as well.

I feel like it's pretty safe to say Starfield will be better than Outer Worlds.
